It's sorta frustrating how two guys that I thought were slam dunk ND guys a month or two ago (Wesolak and Lucas) aren't such a sure thing anymore. Am I jumping the gun too quickly here? Probably need to relax until June with official visits, especially in this case.

Definitely need to practice some patience here.

Neither are sure things and 1 of them doesn't even have a spot at the present. So, I can't say you are jumping the gun as getting both seems very unlikely at the present.

However, I would phrase the conversation for folks sanity as follows. We have a better version of Wesolak in Gobaira and the staff really wanted Agu. So they got the higher rated DE and wanted to gamble on the higher upside DE. Hard to be mad about that.

On Lucas, it does seem like this has turned into more of a battle than previously thought and we're going to have to wait awhile for his recruitment (he's planning to commit at one of the AA games). So, definitely need some patience with this one. And probably need that patience well past the June OV's.

With that said, I think we can all feel very comfortable that in the next 30-90 days we'll have plenty of really good news come our way to distract us from these two.

All the network stuff making this into more of a battle than what local guys believe it is. Word here is this is just like Tosh.

That said, I'd still get into the Hero sweepstakes though I think there's a chance of Ewellish returns. Kid should only be Jr right now reclassified the wrong way when you consider his limited experience vs quality comp. SM is a very ND friendly school too.

I think Lucas would commit before Wesolak. Freeman is working his tail off recruiting and he'll keep working when these kids get on campus. Knowing how many DT's ND is taking in this class Lucas knows his importance to ND. Is Wesolak set up for a visit? June will be big for ND.

I can't believe you used the word sanity on this board. lol

Cool & Thx.

I haven't been on ISD very much recently and missed that.

My take from reading that and hearing stuff locally. He'd "like" to be able to play DE in college and is trying to stay in the physical realm of a college DE. Good luck. Not impossible but he's the kinda guy who could be 330 and not be fat. When I think of 300lb NFL DE's, I see twitchy guys like Tuitt. I don't think he's that kind of athlete. He's fast, he's strong but I don't know if he'll ever be that sorta explosive guy who plays outside regardless of scheme/package.

But hey, he's got all summer and fall to prove otherwise. I'll see all his home games as long as ND's in it.

To be fair, while I heard the DE talk and immediately got concerned that we would be out of it...I do have some trust in Crusader in regards to Arizona kids.

Doesn't Freeman like to use some 3 man fronts? Lucas seems like more of a 3-4 or 3-3 SDE than anybody on the roster right now.

I posted this in the Recruiting Review but I feel pretty good about his visit list. Maybe I’m crazy but I’m just not scared at all with his visit list. LFG!

I wonder if he’s changed his tune at all about playing DE in college. I have a hard time seeing Cyrus Moss committing if we’ve already got 4 DEs on board.

Well, I think it'd start to get crowded for sure but I don't know if those two would affect each others decisions. I think a lot of it depends on how Freeman runs his defense. But, in theory you could have one Gobaira and Agu end up at SDE (Gobaira actually seems likely), Moss Vyper, Ford/Lucas as SDE/DT combos.

These lean muscle mass guys might take a few years to add weight but it comes. Take a look at a picture of Foskey as a HS Junior and then what he looks like now. It's crazy what 3 year of college S&C can do to these long lean athletes.

If we get one of Lucas or Moss, this will have to at least tie for the best DL haul in Kelly's tenure, right?

By 247 standards the Tuitt, Lynch, Williams haul is simply unheard of because those 3 guys were all top 35 guys. Crazy to think only one produced the results expected of that type of rating/ranking. While at ND.

Plus they had Niklas who started on defense and was rated as such, he was #179 overall. So those 4, from a ratings perspective, up against the top 4 of this class?

That's not good.

Some schools are used to the high profile recruitments that last until NSD. BK does not usually have much of an appetite for those since his first few years at ND, and prefers to get things squared away from a numbers perspective as early as possible and avoid any and all drama.

Lucas will probably be a BPA type guy the whole cycle, but it will be interesting how they treat that open DT spot. Do they heat things up with Cooper? Do they offer Kanu?

I'd take the field over ND now. Back around the start of May I first heard the tide (no pun) was shifting. Locals thought it wasn't ND way out front anymore but that he was side open and the DE preference was news at the same time. Did somebody get in his ear and tell him he'd be a DE only? Is a 3-4 team a better fit (in his mind)? I shared this at 247 when I was still on there and they came for my head. Oh well.

I said back in April before Hero blew up that ND should throw a hat in the ring.

Hopefully ND does just that when the Dreamchasers get to South Bend and hopefully Hero's a Catholic boy!

I agree about the drama part I was watching IB and Driskell was saying that ND really needed to crush it and end this recruitment soon rather than let these other teams gain any more momentum. Says he's the most important recruit in the class

Sounds like we weren't able to do that.

I disagree he’s the most important recruit in the class. Nwankpa and Merriweather are undoubtedly more important. And with how well ND has done on the DL, you could probably make easy arguments for a guy like Sneed and 1 of the 3 RB’s.

It’s a classic Driskell argument though.
