So the players who earn trust in practice but don't perform on game day should be replaced by the players who don't earn trust in practice. That trust isn't transferring over to the game.
They could look like Mike Singletary and Wilbur Marshall Monday through Friday. But that doesn't mean anything if it doesn't transition over when it matters.
It's been 5 games. We have more than enough evidence to indicate that it's not just rust or them having to adjust to a new scheme or position. This isn't like the OL, who has adjusted since a bad start to the season.
You want to get the most out of your players in practice and trust they'll do the right thing, but they trusted Bertrand and Marist to put out a great product at LB and that trust has not paid off. Eventually, you have to try something else, because us trying to bash a square peg into a round hole is getting us nowhere.
Jesus christ just reading this post gave me awful flashbacks of Joe Schmidt.it comes down to trust. Can I trust you to make the right read, the right fit, the right adjustment, etc.
He may be physically more gifted and talented, but if he cant be trusted (and the others can) then the trusted players will play.
Trust is built in practice.
Because if you know something isnt’t working, common sense says it is stupid to continue doing it over snd over again. Right now we have QB who wasn’t the “practice winner” in spring and fall camp completing tearing it up and giving us way more of a competitive chance than Buchner was…offensive line woes or not.So the players who earn trust in practice but don't perform on game day should be replaced by the players who don't earn trust in practice.
What about part 1 makes anyone think part 2 would go better.
What’s with everyone piling on Buchner? Kid played basically all his games to date at ND behind some of the worst o line play I’ve ever seen.Because if you know something isnt’t working, common sense says it is stupid to continue doing it over snd over again. Also, see my previous post about Joe Schmidt, and dozens of other Kelly era players that held this team back…at some point in time everybody is unproven,
I would agree with you if this were game 2 or 3.So the players who earn trust in practice but don't perform on game day should be replaced by the players who don't earn trust in practice.

It's getting to be a lot. But, one day soon, Buchner will be the Backup QB Everyone Loves. The circle will be complete. What’s with everyone piling on Buchner? Kid played basically all his games to date at ND behind some of the worst o line play I’ve ever seen.
Exactly. The players know who's practicing hard and not making mistakes in practice just as much as the coaches. Want to piss off your team and risk losing them? Play the players who aren't out performing the starters in practice. My coach opinion: What is he supposed to come out and say "Practice doesn't mean shit"? No that would establish a bad culture in the locker room. Instead, he says that to ease a transition. He can't throw the older guys under the bus. The transition to Kollie as a starter will happen by Clemson and at the very least USC.
I can see why it came off that way, but my intent wasnt to pile on Buchner as much as make the point that he clearly won the practices in spring and fall, but Pyne is killing it on the field right now, so there is no reason to think there can’t be other guys not getting meaningful game snaps right now who would be better game players than the guy who won practice. Although I so think Buch is going to struggle as a QB and said as much back in the spring. His accuracy is not good enough and he misses a lot of reads. Even behind the shaky o line the first couple weeks there were plays to be made, and he couldnt generate anything at all and missed some WRs that were wide open. What’s with everyone piling on Buchner? Bertrand has given him several opportunities to make the move. A coach can have a tough conversation with somebody about their on field performance and needing to give somebody else an opportunity to see what they can do without coming out and saying practice doesnt mean shit. Besides, lets be honest do you think these kids are sitting there during practice grading out all of their teammates amd comparing it to themselves. If a coach comes out and says player x had a good week of practice and he deserves reps, i mean….My coach opinion: What is he supposed to come out and say "Practice doesn't mean shit"? He absolutely deserves an opportunity to play behind an improved OL. Unfortunately if Drew remains healthy this year he'll end up having a lot of experience under his belt while Buchner will only have a few full games of meaningful snaps going back to high school. This offense appears to be getting better as they go too. It's going to be harder for Buchner to win the job back I think if Pyne continues to be this efficient. What’s with everyone piling on Buchner? I think Buchner can still have a package to help the team succeed much like he did last year spelling Coan.He absolutely deserves an opportunity to play behind an improved OL. I agree with this wholeheartedly, I think my only counterpoint would be in regards to the bolded, I feel like the coaches have an obligation to the team, the university and the fanbase to find a way to figure out the answer to this, and just staying with status quo on something that is providing mediocre at best results just because they practice better is not the answer. Practice is obviously important, but at the end of the day you are remembered for what you do on gameday.so maybe it just isnt kelly and its an all football coach thing then right?
Playing time is earned.
I am not defending the current LB group, I have voiced my complaints in various threads before. But just because there are other players doesnt mean they are going to end in better results.
There are reasons they arent playing. It is just standard ND fan to want the next guy (qb, wr, lb, etc.)
If Pyne wasnt tossing practice interceptions up like Oprah during Christmas he might have won the job, but he was. Perhaps he learned his lesson losing the job outright and THAT'S why he is playing well now.
There is far more to just moving on to the next guy because current guy isnt working.
Coach Freeman publicly challenged Kollie - will he step up? We will see.
Until I see Pyne or any QB:He absolutely deserves an opportunity to play behind an improved OL. On sophomore LB Prince Kollie
“Today, different level from him than previously. I’d say the last two weeks, he’s improved. Before North Carolina, I said it’s getting there. Then he plays some nice plays against Carolina. Then he makes the [sack] last week. But it’s starting here. He’s getting what he’s earning in practice and it’s starting to show up on the field.
Some quotes from his Coordinator and position coach. He's learning, he's progressing, but there's still a standard he has to meet and elevate to.On Kollie ‘getting there’ and displaying consistency
“He’s surrounded by some older guys where they don’t really make the mistakes in the fits. He’s starting to progress in that direction. The fits are better. He’s in the right place man-to-man, has the right leverage in man-to-man, in the right place in zone. Picks up a sack last week. Those are all positive plays. If he just continues to do his job, he’s talented enough to make some plays.”
I agree. We’ll see how things shake out the rest of the year.He absolutely deserves an opportunity to play behind an improved OL. Unfortunately if Drew remains healthy this year he'll end up having a lot of experience under his belt while Buchner will only have a few full games of meaningful snaps going back to high school. Some of you need to quit the mental gymnastics that’s going on in your gourds to convince yourselves that Pyne is the guy. He’s been solid and serviceable but Pyne is the guy to get us to 9-3, not a guy that gets us to the promised land.
He's been substantially better than serviceable. He's been great the last 2 weeks. I don't known how confident I am that that continues, but if it does that level of play is capable of taking us past the ceiling we've been hitting the last 5-10 years. Some of you need to quit the mental gymnastics that’s going on in your gourds to convince yourselves that Pyne is the guy. I prefer to be optimistic, yeah, but this take is like your bathtub overflowing and I’m in the apartment beneath you and it’s leaking through my ceiling.
Let’s just pump the brakes lol.

@Dale, I appreciate you my guy. I think you have great takes, and I think bring good perspective. Maybe our playcalling is an issue, or execution. But I’m telling you this Red Zone take was incorrect imo.ND had converted 10/12 Red Zone Opportunities into TDs entering Saturday. One of the best marks in the country. Saturday was objectively bad, but a bit of a what have you done for me lately on the evaluation
The defense’s RZ performance has been consistently worse. We’re 125th in the country. Even being middle of the pack makes our box scores (and stress levels) night and day. We were 4th in the country last year.
