We’ll see if being on this kid early pays off here. Didn’t realize how long we’d been recruiting him for.

https://247sports.com/Article/Devonta-Smith-Oregon-Alabama-college-football-recruiting-144063944/

"My cousin played there in Shaun Alexander so I know what Alabama is all about," he continued. "I consider all offers a blessing and this one is too. Coach Saban wants me to come down on March 7 and I'm definitely trying to make that work. My head coach (Pat McLaughlin) has already told me that he's going to make sure I get down there and my mom might be coming with me. Alabama is up there with any school that has offered me and growing up, I had Alabama and Oregon as my dream schools and now I have offers from both programs."

Seems like an impressionable young man. Hopefully Mickens can work some local magic. Really like Smith and Harmon.

Mickens has got a good board to work with. Now it's time to get some of these guys in the class.

Doesn’t sound good coming from 247. In fact there is t much good coming from 247 regards to ND recruiting right now, lol. Fear this lack of visits is going to kill some big recruitments for ND as we’re trying to go into other territories and recruit. Need players to visit for that.

why though? i have seen others mention this too....i guess i'm more optomistic then....the guys who have popped recently to osu were always likely going there....we just got a new db coach so there is def going to be some relationships he is going to have to work on but with the whole corona thing, coaches can't right now....it sucks we missed out on our big recruiting weekend but so did a lot of other teams

I don't think the staff or plan was that Smith was always going to OSU. He was a big target to lose like this. Quite a slap in the face that an OSU offer was easy for him to shut down his recruitment. Sends a message to me, at least. Nobody is doing that in favor of ND through all of this, right? Now if we start to see guys shut it down in favor of ND, then that'll change things but until then my concerns stand.

And that is, quite a few prospects are considering making decisions without taking the visits they had previously planned, since they don't know when they'll be able to take those visits. Considering ND recruits nationally, they just have to hope these kids decide to drag out recruitments they wanted to be done with. Not a big fan of hoping teenagers are patient when schools locally start telling they need to decide now or risk losing a spot.

ND needs visits and in many cases more than one visit. The March and April visits were a HUGE part in that. With those visits cancelled and yet to be re-scheduled, I'm concerned more guys do what Devonta do and commit to Local U. It wouldn't surprise me if this takes us out of it for a few key targets that were supposed to visit.

More specifically, I also don't think the CB board has much margin for error.

I'm concerned with all of this as well. Hopefully some of those that commit will do it to "hold a spot" and still visit later. Not sure that happens with OSU, Clemson and the other big dogs.

Yea I totally agree. This is a difficult time for ND. A crazy stat I saw was 42/62 of Clemson’s offers live within an 8 hour drive of Clemson. That’s insane. When the ban is lifted on recruiting visits then their prospects can hop in a car and head to Clemson but with ND they’ve got the vast majority of their targets are not within a reachable distance and to rebook flights and hotels is a pain that some kids don’t want to worry about. ND’s gonna be the school likely to be most affected by this coronavirus in my opinion and they’re gonna have to be extremely aggressive in their usage of the official visits to campus cause they’re fighting an uphill battle. The sooner this coronavirus thing gets turned around the better for ND. It’s really hard to sell ND to some recruits, and it’s damn near impossible with no visits.

There's a unrated kid from Indy named Theren Johnson who tore up the MIC last year. He had MAC offers in the last blurb I saw about hi and he's also a very good student. Might be someone Mickens is following since his Cincy days(?) I know he offered Daylan Carnell

When we start winning like OSU, kids will do the same for us. People like a sure thing. Ohio State, Clemson, Alabama. They are running things now.

And Kerry is one of the master motivators in the entire game. I wish he would've made the trip from Cincy to South Bend in the beginning.

Just a follow up here but I read earlier in the week (I think ISD) that Devonta was given the hard sell by OSU. Either get in the class or lose your spot and it might not be completely over with him. Good news is we may have a shot. Bad news is ND needs to have that kind of pull with some of it's top of the board guys.

At least it's a glimmer of hope. Better than the current theme otherwise with recruiting atm...

They would if they recruited 3* ATH's from Chicago or Indy... like J Love.

If they told Daylan Carnell that right now, he'd jump. I bet Ben Perry would too.
