Our DB recruiting certainly leaves something to be desires outside of Kyle Hamilton. Clarence Lewis looks good but a player of his star rating could easily have never seen the field.

I am curious. Can you tell what the athletic differences are between a kid rated at .9015 and .8863? I think people get way too hung up on the stars a kid has. We have had a bunch of 5 stars that never amounted to anything athletically. Many of them never sniffed the NFL. Now we are seeing many of our "3 stars" on NFL teams. I credit coaching them up at the college level to get them ready. I also think that Mickens is doing a nice job, considering he had no spring practice, and what I can only imagine, was a limited summer schedule. Now, if we could only develop one of these touted QB's we seem to get!!! That will put us over the hump!!

I think in the aggregate there’s an extremely predictive relationship between star rating and college performance. There’s enough randomness that it’s tough to see with a sample of 20 or 40 or one team or whatever, but there is no doubt that a .9015 is more likely to get drafted than a .8863.

everybody on 247 is picking him to USC. Not much of a mystery here. Troy must have been his favorite all along.

Yeah this is basically my point. For every Clarence Lewis and Julian Love there are a dozen Kofi Wardlows that never sniff the field. It's not a coincidence that Alabama, LSU, Clemson, & Georgia have the best defenses and are loaded with high 4/5 star talent.

In the case of Philip Riley, it's pretty obvious by his offer list that he's a superior prospect to Theran Johnson and the type of player that can help ND make the leap. Hopefully Theran surprises us like Lewis.

There is a long time before the early signing period. If he flips to USC, there is probably a decent chance he ends up somewhere else.

Somehow he just can’t keep a commitment for whatever reason.

Better he recommit now than 3 months from now.

keep on him. He is pretty good and liked ND enough to date for a while. He just likes some strange.

Once they bring in the one transfer rule it will stop being such a tough decision for a kid because if it doesn't work out hey can move.

Statistically this would mean that only about 7 players (1/12*85) on a team are good in any given year.

Once they get a whiff of strange they will keep going after strange. This kid seemed to just always want the next big team to offer and I don’t see that changing.

Ha, he ends up at USC. They didn’t even make his top 7 before he committed. I will not be wishing him the best for his career at USC. See ya

Let him go we are getting depth now on a regular basis. He won’t be in the NFL as few make it and will unlikely finish with a degree if he chooses USC. A degree from USC from a FB or BB player is not the same as a regular enrolled student. He didn’t make the right 40 year decision. Oh well.

BIG loss.

I loved the complimentary skill sets Barnes, Tucker & Riley brought even if one of them was most likely going to safety... maybe two of 'em(?)

As for him picking SC, the glut of talent should have moved on and he'll have a good shot to contribute in '22 regardless if he's a CB or S.

And to those of you who are still on the SC Dumpster Fire Tour, understand one thing: Regardless if Helton stays or goes, Donte Williams is at SC until an NFL team pays him a LOT more. Not only is he an elite recruiter but he's at home and never forget he turned a talented Oregon backfield into the #1 unit in the country in short order.

I wouldn't trade Williams (CB Coach / Pass Game Coord) and:
Olijah Griffin
Chris Steele
Isaac Taylor Stuart
Greg Johnson
with the best safety tandem in the country in Palo-Mao & Hufanga backing them up for any def. backfield in the country.

What Riley has to watch for is the haul Williams brings in after him this cycle and especially in '22. He'll get Domani Jackson & he's in the driver's seat for three, 4* Corners from CA. What will be interesting is to see if he developed a taste for coast to coast, big game hunting that he did at Oregon.

I agree Riley is a big loss and one we won't be able to replace. I do think USC is trending towards a dumpster fire. Their recruiting has been very subpar for a program that relies on elite recruiting and they have a lame duck head coach. Having a great position coach doesn't make up for that. They are going to waste Slovis who is a top 3 qb in the country imo.

I completely agree on Donte Williams. He’s the best DB coach in the country at recruiting right now. Maybe Coombs could give him a run for his money or Raymond from LSU but he’s as good as it gets. For Riley this makes no sense.

.9313 4* Prophet Brown
.9221 4* Calen Bullock
.9149 4* Anthony Beavers Jr.
.9013 4* Philip Riley
.8985 4* Xamarion Gordon
.8977 4* Jaylin Smith

.9662 4* Ceyair Wright - 2 CB’s this month to USC

I just think he could get lost in the shuffle there with all of that talent. 6-7 dudes in one class doesn’t leave a lot of room for playing time. It’s definitely a disappointing loss for ND’s staff for sure. For USC they’re gonna have a ridiculous back to back DB group in 2021 and 2022 and it’ll be interesting to see who’s coaching them eventually and if they can take advantage of a star studded DB roster

Maybe 1 or 2 of the current commits are gonna drop?

Another look at USC’s roster and they’ve got 14 scholarship DB’s this season and not one runs out of eligibility. If Riley commits then they’d be at 20 for the 2021 season which is definitely loaded. I imagine two things will happen, a bunch of DB’s at USC will be looking to the NFL after this season. Also, I think if they land Ceyair Wright and Philip Riley they’ll push out their bottom dudes from the class so they don’t end up with 40 scholarship DB’s. Another possibility is that one of their athlete DB’s from the class ends up at a different position. We’ll see though. The bottom line is Donte Williams is killing it with DB recruiting and has a lifetime spot at USC with or without Clay Helton in that DB room. If I’m the new coach he’s the first dude retained cause he’s incredible

I believe I posted this above. I think he's grown into a safety or soon will. Similar to Houston Griffith. Still a very good S prospect but I do think that eases the sting a bit. Also, I think as it relates to cover abilities, Barnes recent workouts show he's a more capable cover guy whether at FS or CB. Which, once Hamilton leaves will be a far more important position. So, while Riley is a very good prospect I'd rather have both Tucker and Barnes stay in the class for what is needed.

this gives USC five DBs in this class, does that eliminate Ceyair Wright to USC.
