I have a heard time believing that the general problem we're having with portal players is not wanting to go to class. But presumably that is something for which ND can compensate a player, just like the weather, or being far away from home, etc.
I think the University will survive without portal players who don't want to go to class. I applaud the ND approach.

Sampson said on the II pod that the message boards resemble when ND is down 10-0 in the 2nd quarter. Complete hysteria like we're definitely gonna lose and everyone needs to cool their jets because theres plenty of game left and ND wins far more often than not.

Hes not wrong. But now it feels like we're down 13-0 with 3 minutes left in the half.
He’s so in the dark he’s giving message board junkies news on themselves…

I will feel a ton better if Mukam signs back up and Onye is granted another year. I think that would shore up a lot of my personal concern. I believe both can be impact players on the DL

I will reserve full judgement until all playoff teams are done and their portal period is over. ND’s current situation has to be attractive for guys who want to win and either just did or just missed out on winning

Unless they only take online classes that their GFs do the work for…

I hear you but my gut reaction to this is nah. Just recruit to fit with guys who understand the value of education / experience of ND. It limits the pool but it also acts as a filter for the culture you want anyway. At the same time, to your point, when push comes to shove... we need to be able to sweeten the pot.
I agree but the reality is this approach will mean we’re always pushing uphill when it comes to d line recruiting. I don’t know why but it seems like that’s the position we run into these issues most often.

And I'm sure the Cigs MgGuires and Heupels (and their staffs) of the CFB world leverage that highly in competition w/ ND in the portal.

"ND, come one man! You'll need to go to actual classrooms and do at least some studying. Man, you're gonna be making $x mill. playing here, and you'll be getting exposure - including being on ESPN weekly - to make it to The NFL in our conference; no one's gonna see an ND game on  PEACOCK. Why would you want to go there and play school? You don't need to do that."
Corrected for accuracy

I think it's things like this that the beat does that makes Freeman want to keep things under wraps. Publicly promoting ND is desperate makes guys think they'll over pay and puts the staff at a disadvantage with negotiating with prospects.
I keep saying there is literally nothing the ND beat wants more than to see Freeman have a down season. These guy would rather fire off smug tweets or board posts than cover a title run.

It's hard to believe that our best chance at a serviceable 2-deep DT rotation might be severely overpaying one guy, threatening to sue the NCAA into oblivion for an extra year of Onye and trying to buy Armel Mukam back for probably double what he would have been happy to take last week had ND not low balled him... Then try to lock up Keeley and bump him down inside on passing downs to keep only one of these guys on the field to rush the passer.

NG: Onye
2. Mukam

DT: Addition
2. Hughes

Hope the rest of the team doesn't think they should test the portal as ND isn't adding improvements to the team.

I wouldn't blame them if they did, particularly the ones who came back in part to try and win a National Title.

“Our source claims Ohio State is not in the lead for Coleman’s commitment. This source said LSU and Tennessee were pacing the pack. Notre Dame also made “an enormous offer.”

(context: boarding house is where OSUs guys post rumors they aren’t confident enough to report)

It would make sense that Notre Dame would attempt to save face and shut everyone up by trying to pull the biggest fish out there. If you're not going to get a bunch of your top guys in the portal, why not call Coleman up and offer him $4.5 million to match Jeremiah Smith? Worst case scenario he just says "no". If, for some reason he bites, you're only paying him for one year!

Why not just land the best defensive tackles available?
