He’s going to compete for the job. That tweet is misleading. He’s a very good player.

….and if they needed a backup for just Carr, someone capable would likely see it as a chance to win a fantastic job but ultimately would be backing up the more talented heir apparent. Just like Simmons

Seems like true "problems" relative to the status of the program as a whole would lead to only a couple possibilities here:

1. Multiple QB's out the door
2. J.Love couldn't say no to someone (Oregon) upping an offer to insane heights
3. Greathouse killed it in the playoffs and decided to test the market, and found something
4. Multiple LB's out the door

1 and 4 seem most likely. 2 and 3 were already big worries and all indications are that they've been taken care of. Greathouse because rumors that he already turned down overtures from Texas. Love because he's getting paid-paid by ND. If our NIL is in the top 5 range as insiders say, then we are unlikely to be getting strongly outbid when we decide to go financially all-in on a player like we have with Love.

Bingo. The Ole Miss QB situation is an absolute mess right now. Chambliss is the 2nd QB they have portaled this off-season. Their backup(not the OTHER guy they got in the portal) hurt his hand and for all the bloviating Kiffin did re: Simmons this offseason if you're comfortable with him as your starter you don't bring in a kid with two years of eligibility remaining from the D-II level.

If Notre Dame made a similar move to this one, this place would explode. I can't even imagine the reaction to a FCS player or maybe even a G6 player coming in to compete for time...let alone a kid from D-II

Agreed on 4, LB is just as stacked as the RB room if not moreso, considering how few guys will leave after '25.

Starting to wonder if the portal situation Merck talked about was with the QB room. He posted on 247 that some negotiations have to be done with Minchey.

Edit: and Merck confirmed my suspicions.

It 100% was, because if either or win the job you run the risk of the other jump ship. You can't afford to lose either or that puts your backup as the Freshman or Buchner

Maybe there’s a guy in the portal who has been a solid career backup that we could bring in. Maybe doesn’t have the starts under his belt, but he’s had some post season experience situationally and has been a reliable guy to keep the ship upright if you need him
