I don’t care how you have to tamper. You force the Ayomanor kid from Stanford to tell you no.

I think you make sure that Tyree has an open invite to return, also.
Eh why would you want Tyree with the younger slot talent overload? Rather get a outside guy in the portal and go with Greathouse and Faison in the slot.

But you're right about Ayomanor. And we almost got him out of high school as I recall. If we passed because we didn't have him high enough on the list we were wrong.

It is very important for ND to find one stud outside receiver. It was obviously the missing component this year. Don't let Stanford's defense fool anyone, these guys are not good.

I think they have guys who are on pace to develop into formidable slot receivers, but that doesn't really matter if you don't have one guy capable of giving an all-American DB trouble.

I don't think Faison is relegated to just slot.

He isn't a Fuller-type who can just run straight and burn any team, but his route running is surprisingly advanced for a freshman and he's definitely fast enough. Precise route running goes a long way in being an elite receiver, especially if you have the burst like Faison has. It makes that one misstep by a DB a potential death sentence.

I predict that they’ll get less than whatever ND actually needs from the portal at the WR position and 2024 will be another frustrating season from that room.

I think you can look for depth in the portal but play design and offensive scheme matter more. The WR room is talented but their route combos were poorly drawn up to include minimal spacing.

Always look for depth though.
Have to believe Evans is coming back next year - then you have Raridon and Staes. I would think MF/Staff would concentrate on one or two solid WRs.

Need one stud portal wr outside, need cam to be the talent we think he is, and we need Thomas healthy

Faison and greathouse slot, Rico depth at every position

Great if James and or smith are ready to bring some speed and contribute regularly next year too

You aren’t playing more than 5 or 6 on the regular but this proofs you if one or two get injured/banged up, you’re still in a good spot

Also, agree faison isn’t the fastest straight line but he will run a good 40 and is significantly faster than Kyren

Greathouse isn’t a burner but he can run well when healthy, Rico knows how to beat off coverage and zone but is just so slow and doesn’t have range, he will struggle with press man vs any good db

Here are some WR's who could decide to grad transfer:

Will Sheppard (Vandy)
Jahmal Banks (WF)
Jeremiah Hunter (Cal)
Isaiah Williams (Illinois)
Ja'Mori Maclin (North Texas)

I think people are sleeping on Greathouse when healthy.
He is a lot faster than people give him credit for. It’s just not track speed, it’s football speed.
I watched him in HS run past both Malik Muhammad & Peyton Bowen for about 300 yards in the Texas HS State Championship game.
And early this season & the past two weeks, both times when he was healthy, he ran past people.
It’s weird how he accelerates when he needs to.

Flores is the prototypical possession receiver.
He will catch intermediate balls & always plays his ass off.

Faison will be good. He is fast. And I don’t know why we bring up Will Fuller or other receivers who literally are the fastest in the world. How about Faison is faster than 99% of college players?

And yes you ask Tyree back. Dependable, great leadership & teammate. Fast & playmaker.

Cam Williams will have his chance.

Tobias actually surprised me late in the year and fought for the ball.

Everyone else, who knows?

You definitely take Tyree back if he wants to return, Flores/Greathouse/Faison exceeded my expectations as true freshman, had Colzie/Thomas not gotten hurt how productive would they have been, I think we all expected Merriweather to take a leap this season.

For me it depends who returns & who enters the portal before I decide if ND needs a grad transfer or not. Next season is a now or never for Merriweather and I like the incoming class we have- we know MF is not afraid to play freshman.

If Merriweather can wake up, it solves a lot of problems.

He finally made a hands catch yesterday when he snagged the ball...small optimism, but one of my issues with him is it seems like he's a "basket catch" kinda guy and let's the ball into his chest too much. So when I seen him pick the ball out of the air I was like "There you go Tobias, more of that!"

His issue on the outside is that he is going to have to get a lot stronger // get better at releases. And he's pretty short. But who knows what he'll accomplish in a full offseason!

As far as the WR room, I think we should go to portal but target guys who can take the top off the defense or a shifty make you miss in pace type. Tyree has the speed but is still learning to track the ball and getting accustomed to catching the ball over the shoulder. I think Faison gives you that and we've how impactful he was. I want to see what KK Smith and Braylon James bring in the spring because they might be able to provide more of that. Overall, I like the pieces in the room.

Not true.
Prister has repeatedly named player after player who played as true Freshmen under BK. That’s been debunked numerous times.
There’s a difference between playing a lot and only playing a few snaps here and there

I don't think Kelly would've had much choice.

What other options were there? Colzie and Thomas were hurt. So, sans the freshman, you only had Merriweather and Tyree.

What do people think? How imperative is it get a top outside guy in the portal? I think ND should be moving heaven and earth to get at least one difference maker there. I think slot will be fine.

1. Faison. If he bulks up — which he almost certainly will — seems like he can be a dynamic return guy and slot WR. Super shifty but is always going to struggle with releases from the outside because he doesn’t have elite “top end” speed and is small.
2. Greathouse. Clearly his best position is the slot. Like Faison, he lacks top end speed, but he runs routes well and has good hands.
3. Flores. I’m “stock down” here because he seems to have the worst attributes of Faison and Greathouse, but as depth in the slot he seems fine.

On the outside, there are zero proven players. Thomas and Colzie were hurt this year, Merriweather played poorly. Braylon James couldn’t get on the field but has upside at least.
My eyes must be deceiving me because I would swear Faison has plenty of speed to kill DBs, both with cone drill and top end.

Here was our production this year:

If we get Tyree back and no underclassmen leave, we will have a healthy roster. Add the 2024 recruits and there is a lot more competition. I do believe one additional WR that could push for a "top 3" position would be great. It gets really tricky if we lose more than 1 of the guys currently slated to stay with the team.

I'm uncertain about Colzie but it seems like he made the decision to preserve a year given he only played 4 games so it's probably a safe assumption he's looking around. If that's the only attrition and we keep our 3 WR pledges, then a single big time WR brought in through the portal would have us in a very healthy spot.

Are there any WRs rumored to be looking around? We probably have to land a transfer QB to be a bit more desirable.

Trust me, he doesn’t have great “top end” speed. He’s not like a Tyreek Hill or Will Fuller style player who will post an elite 40 time. He’s more of Kyren Williams with elite short area quickness and agility, if that makes sense. His acceleration and speed within 15 yards of making a cut is as good as it gets, but he isn’t going to just run away from guys in a straight line.
Ran 4.41 for Iowa Summer after Jr year which is plenty fast...wonder what he runs now

Did everyone give up on Braylon James?
No, he just has a ways to go to be relied upon. Specifically route running and hands. I watched him warm up 3 times, you see the potential, but you also see why he's not playing. He drops some easy passes in warm ups somewhat regularly.
