Meh. I much prefer it when people come to post articles behind paywalls. I love it when I click on the link…only to find out I can’t read it. Good times.

Well boys, we take off around 4AM tomorrow morning to get up to ND to watch the practice session. Originally thought we might get to sit in on some meetings as well, but I think our whole varsity staff is going now so that's probably out. I'll update you all on the experience when I can.

Encouraging stuff from Pete's mailbag.

I’ve baked “Buchner makes a leap” into this season’s analysis, for the record. Watching Buchner at practice last weekend, it felt like we were seeing a quarterback who took a step forward as a player, knowing where the ball should go, finding his voice at the line of scrimmage. It wasn’t a revelation, but if he keeps progressing from here, Notre Dame will have a playmaker at quarterback. How much that raises the floor of the season, well, that might say more about the other skill position players on offense.

SIAP, Awesome quote from Kollie in here:

"if anyone says they’re happy as a freshman, remember these wise words: 'They’re lying or they’re Kyle Hamilton.' - Prince Kollie"

Today it's the S position that gets time with the media.

Some takeaways from my day today...

  • Significant faces at practice today included Drayk Bowen who was accompanied by Chad Bowden for almost the entire time, coach Tony Wise who coached OL for Miami back in the day and is friends with Hiestand, and Kyle Rudolph who spoke with the team after practice. (I'll mention Kyren and Kevin were in the house towards the end of practice too and were getting some work in after practice I believe.)
  • Tommy was fiery with his group to start the day. Lit the fire and the team as a whole worked with a tempo that you love to see from that point on.
  • Saw a decent split between Buchner and Pyne with the 1s. Pyne seems to throw the prettier ball but lacks the zip of Buchner. Buchner's athleticism is apparent, but in red jerseys it's hard for him to display. Angeli actually looked pretty good. Powlus looks the part but in his chance to run the offense he threw a pick six (Jaden Mickey) to start his series.
  • JD Price and Logan Diggs received a lot of work today. Price looks really good for a true freshman. His ability to cut is exceptional. Both saw plenty of looks on pass plays out of the backfield as well.
  • WR depth is concerning with your only upperclassmen participating today being Lenzy who still seems to struggle on catching some balls. Lo Styles is legit and is going to be all over this offense I would expect. Jayden Thomas I thought had a decent showing today. Came down with a TD snag on Mickey to close out the practice. Deion will definitely be involved as well as he provides length that no one else has.
  • The D looks sharp in the box, but the back end had some lapses. I thought Mickey really showed to be a competitive guy who will contest things. Lewis is looking better. Hart was out today. It was some back end communication that seemed to be off but it's still early.
  • OL is getting a ton of reps. They all stayed for extra reps after the other position groups had long gone. Fisher is working back from the knee still but looking good (expectations for him are lofty). Almost all the guys I was with noted they really like Rocco. Alt looks like a freaking baby in the face. He could still be growing. Only downside with the group is that they have a number of guys out for the time being and Patterson missing spring hurts when we need this group well rehearsed before OSU.
  • Last thing I'll mention off the top of my head, when Freeman mentions practicing competitively as a team, he's not joking. I saw hits that were harder than a lot of live game stuff it seemed. And there is definitely friendly trash talk between the units during this time. Almost got ran over by Bothelo and Mayer when Mayer made a great contested TD catch to which Bothelo was vocally disappointed. A play later and Bothelo sits the FB (did you know we have a FB and he was used pretty regularly?) down in the endzone after another catch to which Mayer got up in his face about the hit -- some great healthy jawing between those two and the groups in general. I mentioned the practice closed on a JT TD catch on Mickey, but the play before, Mickey broke up the TD catch JT should have had after a nice hitch and go.
All in all it was a great experience. I might be able to give more tidbits but I am not sure what everyone would want to hear. Absolutely exhausted after the long day as we had to leave here at 4AM and just got back an hour or so ago. Ask though and I will try to answer.

This seems to be a very glaring concern for everyone; when can we expect them to address it? Why haven't we heard of any potential transfers, is it still early in that process?

I think they are eyeing post spring WR transfers. I don’t know if they have a name in mind (they definitely knew about Joseph in some capacity ahead of time) or are just hoping the right name comes up.

What was safety looking like? Could you tell if Joseph lacks size/physicality?

Anybody have insight on whether Qadir Ismail would be a possibility?

Didn't get to see them come up in the run game a ton today. They do run only sessions with just the guys who play in the box while WRs and DBs go do other work. They usually only come around when they're throwing the ball.

I'd also say I could recognize most guys, but Joseph is still a face that would be new to me so I can't tell if I saw him out there.

Care to expand at all on Buchner and Pyne?

Suoer jealous, Beau! Thanks!
Buch looks like he needs to still learn his progressions and sometimes just pull the trigger. When he does, it's usually pretty good, but his placement can still be a bit inconsistent at times. I recall a flat route that just was simply off target and a deep post that instead of leading to the empty part of the field forced the WR to try to turn back into it. Hard to judge his ability to scramble and save some of the plays where he kept it.

Pyne had a series of corner routes where left the ball on the back shoulder of the TE causing him to slow them up. Pyne was also the one I think Tommy told to hurry the heck up at the beginning of prepractice which then helped set the tempo the rest of practice. Again, Pyne threw the tight spirals you love to see, but there is noticeably more zip on Buch's throws.

So you're saying we need to talk Iowa's backup QB to come in for competition? Only kidding.....kind of......SMH

“At first, I’m like, ‘There’s no way I’m in the box or no way I’m at D-end right now”

Henderson on some of the alignment of the safeties with Golden. Jamie U saw the same thing in practice, they are moving them close to the LOS way more so far.

Depending on how well our CBs can cover, this is a massive shift in the havoc potential. Overloading the box on any given play can really cause anxious QBs to make poor decisions.

I'm really jonesing for the spring game. And I wish our ND media team was releasing more mashups from practice.

Safeties are being graded on their playmaking plays in every practice so definitely jives with that.
This is probably a dumb question but is that true for both safety positions? My first thought was with Joseph on board they were perhaps experimenting with a lot of one high looks.

Is the guy from Johns Hopkins still an option or a live prospect?[

Not sure. I assume Joseph ends up as the Field Safety but it sounds like everyone is just rotating 1s - 2s, boundary, field for now since everyone besides Walters is in the mix to start. Brown I feel like got a lot of blitzing mentions off the one practice report.

Not sure. Sounds like PWO so wouldn’t expect it is to much benefit besides practice depth, which isn’t without need.
