2020 LB Recruiting (1-2 spots)
.9985 5* Justin Flowe - CA - FAR - Never Visited
.9585 4* Noah Sewell - UT - FAR - Never Visited
.9499 4* Curtis Jacobs - MD - FAR - 6/23/18 - PENN STATE COMMIT
.9434 4* Trenton Simpson - NC - FAR - Never Visited
.9321 4* Kevin Swint - GA - FAR - Never Visited - CLEMSON COMMIT
.9125 3* Mohamed Kaba - NC - FAR - Never Visited
.8900 3* Cody Simon - NJ - FAR - 3/23/19

This is where I run into trouble because I do not really know who is a drop vs. a linebacker. After going through twitter and IE for a little while I moved a bunch of guys to different positions and am left with a rather small list. Kalel Mullings I recently saw Lance Taylor was speaking to him about RB with DeaMonte Trayanum. I also saw Drew Sanders, Mekhail Sherman, Jordan Botelho, Eric Shaw, Mitchell Melton, and others were being recruited for the Drop position by Elston instead of Mike, Buck or Rover. Now I may have missed a few so I'd love the help in figuring out who is being recruited at what position.

As for the recruiting there's not a lot to look at. I really don't know what kind of board ND is looking at because they have 12 scholarship guys projected to return which is a ton. In my opinion, Jonathan Jones is playing his last season at ND in 2019 so there will be a spot that does open up, but that isn't a guarantee because the starting jobs are pretty wide open still. Noah Sewell is a surprise offer because he's the opposite kind of linebacker that ND is looking for in that he is shorter and stouter (260+ lbs) than most guys they recruit. Now I've heard he can move and is a tremendous talent, but I'm not sure where he'd fit in other than Mike unless he can rush the passer. I think the staff is actively recruiting Trenton Simpson, Mohamed Kaba, and Cody Simon but I am not sure what kind of interest these prospects have in ND aside from Simon. Simpson and Kaba have never been to ND and it is hard to predict they'll come to South Bend for college if they haven't made it to campus. I think the only realistic option right now is Cody Simon and I saw LuckyLucci mention the staff might not hold a spot for him (depending on his timeframe). There's a dangerous precedent set when it comes to skipping on a position altogether so I believe we'll see some movement on this position group soon enough and especially in April/May with a new evaluation period fast approaching. The last spring evaluation period saw Lea go in person to many linebackers around the country and watch them work out so he may be doing that again to find some more targets.

I would really love if ND offered Jordan Turner out of Farmington. Has the makings of a good Buck.

Biggest recruiting weekend of the year so far at Notre Dame
BYTOM LOY 23 minutes ago

To say this is a big weekend for Notre Dame recruiting, well, that would be an understatement. Some top of the board targets will be on campus in South Bend this weekend and with many of them taking official visits, this could be the final shot for Notre Dame to land them.
247Sports and Irish Illustrated break down exactly who is coming to town and where things stand with their recruitment to this point.

Port Huron (Mich.) Northern four-star defensive end Braiden McGregor is a target Notre Dame is working extremely hard to land. Led by defensive line coach Mike Elston and defensive coordinator Clark Lea, the Fighting Irish have been recruiting 247Sports’ No. 27 overall player for a very long time. Now it’s time to close to the deal with the 6-5, 245-pounder. McGregor will be at Ohio State and Michigan in the future and will then make a final decision before his senior year. This could be the final on-campus contact before he announces a commitment. Notre Dame loves this young man and wants to see the elite talent suiting up for the Fighting Irish.

St. Louis (Mo.) DeSmet four-star wide receiver Jordan Johnson will also take an official visit to Notre Dame this weekend. Don’t look for a commitment quite yet, as he has some trips he wants to take, including another to South Bend in June, before he announces his decision in July. I believe Notre Dame leads at this point for the 6-2, 180-pounder, but again, it’ll be up to receivers coach DelVaughn Alexander, offensive coordinator Chip Long and special teams coach Brian Polian to close the deal for the No. 34 overall recruit this cycle per the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

Notre Dame has been pushing for Lake Forest (Ill.) high school four-star defensive lineman Rylie Mills for a very, very long time. The staff doesn’t necessarily know whether he’s an end or a tackle down the road, but for them, they just want to make sure he’s playing for the Fighting Irish when that time comes. The 6-5, 275-pounder has been high on Notre Dame for a long time, which is directly tied to his tremendous relationship with defensive line coach Mike Elston and quarterbacks coach Tommy Rees, who attended Lake Forest high school as well. The country’s No. 123 overall player per the 247Sports Composite Rankings is battling closely with Ohio State and Wisconsin at this point.

The Fighting Irish will get their shot with Little Elm (Texas) high school four-star cornerback Ryan Watts this weekend during his official visit. Notre Dame, led by special teams coordinator Brian Polian and cornerbacks coach Todd Lyght, love the 6-2, 187-pounder’s length, quickness and instincts at the position. The staff sees him as a potential difference-maker at the next level and wants Watts showing those talents in South Bend for a couple of years. Oklahoma has been trending on the 247Sports Crystal Ball for 247Sports’ No. 214 overall player in the country, but Notre Dame believes it has a shot to leave a major impression this weekend.

Littleton (Colo.) Columbine four-star offensive tackle Andrew Gentry landed his Notre Dame offer during an unofficial visit back in Dec. 2018 and swore at the time he’d be back for an official visit. Well, the time is now. Gentry and his parents, with his mother taking her first visit, will arrive on campus for the official visit this weekend. The 6-8, 310-pounder is an interesting case. Following high school, Gentry will take a two-year mission trip and not arrive on a college campus until 2022. Notre Dame has no issues with that and still wants him. BYU is the team to beat per the 247Sports Crystal Ball, but the No. 57 overall recruit nationally hasn’t made up his mind quite yet.

Sterling (Va.) Dominion four-star offensive tackle Jimmy Christ was never shy about his interest in Notre Dame. He made it very clear early on that he wanted an offer from the Fighting Irish and they’d be very much under consideration had it come his way. The 6-7, 280-pounder received great news from Notre Dame and picked up the coveted offer. Now it’s time for Christ to return to campus this weekend with his parents for his official visit. This will be his mother’s first trip to campus. Everyone is excited. Notre Dame will have to beat Oklahoma, Virginia, Boston College, Ohio State and many others. The 247Sports Crystal Ball is currently in favor of the Fighting Irish for the No. 332 overall recruit in the 2020 class.

Irish Illustrated dropped some scoop on Thursday regarding Washington (DC) St. John’s College high school three-star defensive back Mordecai McDaniel heading to Notre Dame this weekend for an official visit. The 6-3, 187-pounder is a very intriguing target due to his ability to play both spots in the secondary and shine on special teams as well. Surely safeties coach Terry Joseph, cornerbacks coach Todd Lyght and special teams coordinator Brian Polian will be all over him all weekend long. McDaniel is a terrific athlete and one Notre Dame is hoping to land sooner rather than later. Others in play for the No. 368 overall recruit in the country include Alabama, LSU, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Penn State, Michigan and many others.

The top class of 2020 recruit heading to town that isn’t taking an official visit is Arlington (Texas) Mansfield Timberview four-star cornerback Jalen Kimber. The 6-1, 180-pounder is an outstanding cornerback and one that has the likes of cornerbacks coach Todd Lyght, defensive coordinator Clark Lea and special teams coordinator Brian Polian all over him. Kimber is ranked as the No. 108 overall player this cycle per 247Sports and the top contenders for him include Notre Dame, Alabama, TCU, Texas and Texas A&M. Can the Fighting Irish win this battle? It all starts with a great visit this weekend.

A player I like a lot is Danville (Ky.) Boyle County three-star cornerback Landen Bartleson. The 6-1, 182-pounder already visited once this offseason and is returning for another unofficial visit this weekend. The current plan is for him to return yet again this summer for an official visit. All signs point toward Notre Dame eventually landing him when it comes time for him to make a decision. The staff would absolutely take him because of his speed, length and overall abilities. While some schools are recruiting him as a running back, a position he’s very good at, the Irish love him in the secondary and believe he can be a big-time performer at cornerback.

Notre Dame is also hosting a trio of Fighting Irish commits this weekend as well. Denver (Colo.) J.K. Mullen four-star defensive tackle Aidan Keanaaina, who committed to Notre Dame back on Feb. 13, will be in town for his official visit this weekend. He’ll surely spend a ton of time recruiting the likes of four-star defensive end Braiden McGregor and four-star defensive lineman Rylie Mills to join him along the Notre Dame defensive line.

Alexandria (Ky.) Covington Catholic four-star tight end Michael Mayer, a 6-5, 240-pounder who committed to Notre Dame back on July 1, 2018, will be back on campus this weekend for his unofficial visit. The nation’s No. 1 tight end will be joined by Red Bank (N.J.) Catholic four-star tight end Kevin Bauman, who committed to Notre Dame back on June 13, 2018. The 6-5, 238-pounder joins Mayer as arguably the top tight end duo in the country when looking at commitment lists. Bauman is listed as the No. 2 tight end in the country this cycle

For this section, I only added a few guys to the board because a lot of the offers to OLineman in the 2020 class have become non targets. Turner Corcoran, Chad Lindberg, Andrew Raym, Geirean Hatchett, Roger Rosengarten (after that recent poor visit), and Jake Wray have become unrealistic targets due to their limited interest in ND or the staff's limited interest in them.

For their targets I'd say that Tosh Baker is the #1 with a clear separation between him and the rest. After that I think they'd like another tackle (Jimmy Christ) and an inside guy or two. I think if what Crusader is saying is true and Zinter is coming back only 3 weeks after his visit then he's gotta be on commit watch or close to it. I have zero idea if ND is making a great push for Skoronski because other than CB's going his way, he doesn't really talk or say anything about his recruitment. I'd think the most realistic class right now would be Tosh Baker, Jimmy Christ, Zak Zinter, and Peter Skoronski. How I'd order the prospects would be...

1) Tosh Baker
2) Jimmy Christ
3) Peter Skoronski
4) Reece Atteberry
5) Zak Zinter
6) Jonah Monheim

I think if they can land 3-4 of the top 5 dudes then that's an awesome offensive line class for this cycle.

Do you think Christ ends up being a 4 star recruit? The kid has 40 FBS offers. 40!! His offers even put Baker to shame. He’s got a potential to be a 6’6”+ 305lb OT in college which would be scary.

He's easily a 4* on Rivals and that single handedly raises his composite just above 4*.

247's board for 2020 OT's is jacked. Half the guys they have listed as OT's will never play OT in college and many already play OG in HS... like Zinter. Even Rivals has him at #22 and half of the guys above him are college OG's.

He's easily a Top 10 OT this class, maybe Top 5.

I’d have him as my #2 overall OLineman behind Baker. Between Skoronski, Christ and Baker, ND has 6 CB’s heading their way. Might actually happen where they get Christ and Baker.

Film isn't too bad but he is definitely raw. He is stronger on film than you'd think. He does a lot stuff well but is inconsistent in his film. He closes well and shows good hands but inconsistently. He also has a slow first step. I think he is a bit of a project.

I liken him to Ade. A lot to work with and raw tools, but a lot of work to do in order to get him ready for prime time. With that said, I wouldn't read too much into this right now. Still needs to visit and go from there.

I agree. If they take his commit something went wrong with big board.

Sounds like he plays a lot of AAU basketball. FWIW, random notes about him...90 inch wing span and wants to major in business...

All the quality academic offers, Stanford, Vandy, Duke, etc. Sounds like a great profile fit. Liken him to Ade. Will just take multiple years before he's ready to play. Just read an interview where Ade said he came in at 210. Very similar to this kid.

Yeah. One big advantage will be this kids competition compared to Ade's. No comparison in that respect and could even speed up the process for him if/when he focuses only on football.

Is that wing span number a typo? That sounds like Marfan syndrome.

Reported as 90 inch. Likely exaggerated. Largest in NFL I believe is Cowboys David Irving with 87 3/4 inches at 6'7 (Clowney is 83")

EDIT: did more digging for comparison. Appears largest NBA wingspans for players 6'6 to 6'8 have been in the 87-90" range.

I know it's been discussed on here ad nauseam, but I was perusing the 24/7 website for ND's top prospects, and it feels as though we are "in" so many more .94 and higher ranked guys this year compared to years prior. There wasn't a big turnover in the coaching staff, so I'm wondering what the difference is? Is it that we won last year? Is it just that the continuation of the same staff making connections is now paying dividends? Is it just a good year in the midwest and this is an outlier? Curious to hear what our hardcore recruiting guys think.

I would suggest one factor is that BK's status looks a lot more certain that it did even a year ago.

1) Good midwest year for talent
2) Terry Joseph settling into his role in his 2nd year (really good recruiter), Lance Taylor being a massively better recruiter than Autry Denson, Mike Elston now has proof in his DLine development after last season to show off to his recruits (he's an elite recruiter too)
3) 2nd cycle of having the new OV's which I think ND uses to their advantage as much as any school (I think only Oklahoma has close to the same number of OV's on the books right now).
4) Brian Kelly taking his hands off the reins offensively has allowed him to be more of a CEO role and Brian Polian has mentioned his recruiting has stepped up in the last cycle or two.
5) Oh, they went to the playoffs this year

I think when you combine a really good recruiting staff that BK has put together with his increased involvement you're gonna see a rise in ND's recruiting as long as they keep winning.

Two 10-win seasons in a row (and 3 in 4 years), plus a coaching staff clearly willing to put in the work on the recruiting trail, implementing a plan informed by BK's decade on the job.
