Interesting...

Lots of veterans leaving the DLine room after this season so it makes sense to keep a veteran guy around for a 5th year especially when he’s probably not the focal point DE in 2019 but could be a major contributor in 2020. The interesting part is that it makes 15 scholarship DLineman projected to return in 2020 right now which would mean the DLine class probably wouldn’t be able to exceed 4 which is very interesting because of how many dudes are getting offers/being pursued

Ewell flips to the other side of the line. Real curious if he will have a real impact.

given the above, and Studstill leaving, I think we can assume Allen sticks at S for at least this year.

On Ruhland: This reminds me of the situation very early in Kelly's regime where we had two center candidates. I can't recall the one name, but he was the veteran technician. The other was Braxton Cave.

Kelly was asked about the Center situation. He said: "When XXXX blocks he always blocks the right guy, but that guy doesn't always stay blocked. When Cave blocks, that guy stays blocked, but Braxton doesn't always block the right guy."

It was obvious that Coach thought Cave was the correct choice as he had the strength to manhandle a DT. (and that was true until he got hurt much later.) I believe that Coach is seeing something similar with Ruhland and XXXX --- not really powerful enough to hold up all game long --- a fundamental limitation in other words.

These other guys moving to center are probably our Braxton Cave's.

I’ll start by saying they know more than I but the move of Patterson seems like a worst possible scenario this early on. It dramatically weakens the options and competition at other spots that badly need it.

Is there anywhere that says who the number one O line was?

Same guys at same spots as last year with Patterson at OC.

It essentially eliminates some of the competition for RT and RG spots as well as immediately eliminating the possibility of Hainsey moving to OC. Which before Spring practice has even begun is disappointing, at least to me.

I like this move. About a year and a half ago the commentators and staff seemed to be saying that Patterson's excellent movement and flexibility would make him an outstanding candidate for Center (during the latter stages of the recruitment process.) As to competition: The Giant Lugg awaits, among several others.

I'll be quite stunned though (barring injuries) if Eichenberg/ Banks/ ... center ... / Kraemer/ Hainsey are not the OLine first team array for the whole season. Three of them have been described as the leaders, and we all like Banks' ability to move and maul. If Patterson can do it, this line will be really good (given a typical serious improvement from one year to a next playing together in the Fist of Doom that OLine's are).

What our OLine needs are RBs who can hit holes hard and on time and block their position. If we'd have had that last season there wouldn't be so much griping about last year's OLine version. (once Banks took over LG, I saw an awfully lot of guard-play mauling DTs and piling up the middle of the field ... but often backs who hesitated or ran to the wrong spots. And, with the exception of Mustipher, I saw very little zonal-responsibility pocket collapsing in the cup. When the OTs didn't get speed-beat, Book usually had time. So, my watching doesn't quite resonate with the griping about Kraemer. ... who seems to catch most of the overt flack.)

I'm avidly awaiting the pleasure of watching this OLine play and evolve.

in one of Loy's freebie vids, he said the two second year guys he's most excited about are Austin and Lenzy. Said he's heard Lenzy took a giant step in the off season. Both should zoom up the depth chart.

and some more freebie stuff from 247
https://247sports.com/college/notre...ing-Notre-Dame-spring-practice-No-1-129674939

ON EARLY IMPRESSIONS FROM DAY ONE OF PRACTICE
“The first day you’re hoping that there is a bit of a carryover with veteran players in certain areas. When you get into some team time you want to see a competitive environment with guys that know how to practice the right way, and that was certainly the case… The quarterback, (Ian) Book, looked sharp. Chase Claypool looks natural at the position in terms of where we’re playing him (boundary receiver). I think there’s going to be some really good continuity on the offensive and defensive line. They know how to practice, they know the pace of practice, so a lot of good things that you would expect in the first day with a group that clearly knows the standards of how to practice the right way.”

ON THE PROCESS OF FIGURING OUT WHO HIS CAPTAINS WILL BE
"I want to continue to give them opportunities to lead in a different kind of environment. Being a captain in the weight room and being part of the SWAT team is one thing, but now handling different situations where maybe they have to interact a little bit differently in the locker room, on the practice field — I want to expose them to as many opportunities to lead. This segment in our development of this football team just lends itself to different opportunities… They’re all kind of new at this, so it just gives them more experience."

ON JARRETT PATTERSON STARTING AS FIRST-TEAM CENTER
I like his athleticism, smart kid. One thing that really stood out last year was assignment correct, emotionally stable in the sense that every single day you got the same kid — and we like that at the center position. He’s going to have some help with the guards in terms of they’ve got some experience and they’ll be able to call out some things for him… We need to continue to work on his technique snapping the ball — not that that ball was all over the place, but we’ve got some work to do technique-wise there. We feel like that’s a good position for him."

ON RECEIVER BRADEN LENZY AND HIS GROWTH, ADDED SIZE, AND HIS SPEED
“I think anybody that has been in our strength and conditioning program and has really shown a dedication to it is going to put on a coat of armor. Thicker without getting slower. Michael Young has been the same. Michael has put on good weight and he’s faster. He just needed that weight to get up there, cover up DBs and do his job — catch the ball in traffic and be more confident as a football player… Still have to catch it consistently, but he hasn’t lost a step. He’s got that explosive speed that we recruited, but certainly a stronger player is a more confident player.”

ON DJ BROWN AND HIS MOVE TO SAFETY FROM CORNERBACK
"He was cross-training. We had an indication on ‘Stud’ (transferring), but we wanted to see DJ at both of those positions."

ON TIGHT END COLE KMET MISSING PRACTICE DUE TO BASEBALL
“This is the last weekend that he’ll miss. In practice one where we weren’t doing a whole lot — we didn’t want him to miss the contact scrimmages. So working with baseball, we felt like this would be the one (weekend) to give up.”

ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF SOPHOMORE ROVER LINEBACKER SHAYNE SIMON
“Just a lot more confident, playing faster. Everything was robotic last year. He had to see it before he could react. He’s reacting, playing a lot faster. I think we’ll see a lot more from him. It’s the first day. Everything he does — engagement, conversation — his eyes were down last year when you had a conversation with him. He’s looking you in the eyes (now)… It's just the natural progression of a young guy that we think is on the come. He’s going to do some nice things for us."

ON GUYS WHO MADE BIG STRIDES PHYSICALLY THIS OFFSEASON
“I think there would be some guys that would look at the defensive line right now and look at Julian Okwara and the good weight he’s put on. Across that defensive line, they’ve done a great job of not only putting on weight but strength with the weight. They look really good … There’s not a guy that doesn’t look good and put on functional weight for his position… Chase Claypool looks faster, moves faster, catches the ball with speed out of the break, so he looks more explosive. The guys that need to look good for us to be good look good."

ON QUARTERBACK IAN BOOK AND HIS GROWTH AS A LEADER
“Oh yeah, and we’ve put him in a leadership position as well. A couple of things happen. One, you are put in a position of leadership and you handle yourself differently. But two, the expectations he’s handled on a day to day basis quite well. Ian’s not a particularly loud and vocal guy, but he’s going to stand up when he needs to say something. He’s done that a couple of times, he was asked to do that, and it resonates quite well. He is a different leader than he was last year. He was just a quarterback at Notre Dame last year. He’s a leader in our program (this year). That’s a big difference.”

So we basically won't hear about spring practice from reporters for another two and a half weeks correct? What a tease

In terms of over analyzing short clips from practice videos, I'll say that I was pretty impressed with how Jahmir Smith looks physically and how well he moved. Looked very quick running through the ladder drill. It'll be interesting to see who emerges from that group.

I'll jump on the "over analyze" train and talk about some linebackers:

Shayne Simon can move. He was two or three steps quicker than all the other LB's in the drills we got to see.
Bo Bauer looks like he moves almost as well as Simon.
JOK looked sloppy and slow. Hopefully he's knocking some rust off and can battle it out at Rover.
Jack Lamb really does look kind of scrawny, to me.
JGH looks jacked up.

Way too early prediction:

ROVER - Simon
MIKE - Bauer
BUCK - Bilal and JGH split time

Agree on all counts

If what we see translates at all, Simon could be very very good. JOK is leaving me with WTFs, and I really wish Kiser was healthy and in the mix. IMO he could have ended up #2 on depth chart if healthy.

I've been on the Bauer train for a while. I thought he could even move to Buck for depth (before the move of Bilal). You're not the only saying that he's one of the best moving LBs we have. I've heard Bilal, Kiser, Bauer, and Simon are all up there. And for a Mike, that's just awesome. I got bashed by Lucky for talking about how quick and athletic he was lol, so watch out with all the crazy talk (just kidding Lucky). I think Lamb is going to need another year min.

I'd love for JGH to challenge at Buck. It's nice to have the ability to put Bilal back at Rover if we needed due to injury or lack of depth.

Did anyone see what Jack Lamb's weight change is?

I have not seen anything but his weight isn't that far off the other LB's (he was 226/Bauer is now 230), he's just the longest/tallest of the group so he looks much leaner. Also, both Tim's at II said that he looks more filled out than he did just a few months back. So, at least to them, he's moving in the right direction. There is still a lot of time for him to grow.

I thought he looked way skinny, but there weren't other players for point-of-reference, so I'm likely wrong lol

226 is not light IMO. What was Coney playing at when he was a Buck? I know they have two different physiques but if we are just going on weight? Looks like he was about 240, so Lamb may need about 5 to 10 lbs.

Patterson may or may not end up there. If Rhuland was healthy I think he'd be practicing with the starters. Patterson will be the backup center and worked there during the bowl practices. Besides, I'm not so sure it's a bad idea. He has better feet, is quicker and bigger than Rhuland. You can do a lot more when your center can pull.

This isn't the case. Kelly said that Patterson is being groomed as the starting OC and Ruhland is a utility inside OL.
