The one-sided loss at Maryland looked and felt like a point of no return without any buttons to push or resources to rely upon to pull #NotreDame basketball back to the level it was a few years ago. The program is broken.

I cannot fathom how their shooting is so consistently horrible. It's like no matter what combination is out there the result is 1+1+1+1+1 = negative six gajillion.

Carmody getting hurt sucks - especially on one of the only aggressive plays of the night. Kid has guts but doesn't do any good if his body can't hold up.

I would trade Doherty for Gibbs right now - whatever his problem is seems to be contagious.

when the homer media turns on you you're in big trouble as a coach. and I'm happy. This was (is) a very complacent program.

Eh, I'm all for dogging on the team for playing like crap, but this may be a bit of an over reaction. Maryland is going to do that to a bunch of teams this year in their own building. We saw this same type of game play out all over the country these last few days (MSU, Michigan, UNC) where a top 10 home team laid the wood to someone. In UNC's case, being the home team.

All that said, we still played awful. After sleeping on it, I came to a few conclusions:

1.) I don't think we have a pure point guard on the team. I said this last year about Hubb, but I believe he only played the point after Chris Lykes graduated. He can make some extraordinary passes, but right now he has tunnel vision. Someone needs to sit him down and show him video of Eric Atkins just probing the defense and finding an open shooter.

2.) On the Hubb front, I'm honestly ok with giving him a pass yesterday. Playing back home, I'm guessing he was nervous, then frustrated. But, he's falling back into bad habits. Watch his UNC game vs yesterday. I know I harped on it last year, and it seems subtle, but the arc of his shot is back to being a rainbow. Honestly, go watch the first 3 he shot against Maryland. It had to come close to hitting a rafter (and as soon as he shot it I groaned). Then watch the UNC game. It's not a small difference. He will not be a good shooter with his release point and that arc (even with a higher release point, you rarely see good shooters with that much arc on the ball).

3.) I'm not sure what you do with Gibbs. I really don't. He does this too frequently to lend him the benefit of the doubt anymore.

4.) Rex can not compete with high-major athleticism. He struggled even making entry passes. There were at least 2 back cuts I saw where he was burned (I quite watching late in the second half) and the end of the 1st half play where he ran directly into a screen, didn't challenge, didn't box out.

5.) I'd give John Mooney a big huge if I saw him, stroke his hair, and tell him he'll have more help in Europe next year.

6.) From what I've seen, the two guys who are the most reliable (and that isn't saying much) beating their guy off the dribble are Laz and Djogo. Yes, Laz and Djogo. Laz has been pretty good off the dribble (he beat his guy last night and got it stripped by a help defender due to our spacing being pathetic) and Djogo has shown that he can do it previously (although, what he does when he gets to the paint is an entirely different situation). Yes, Carmody is probably the best at it, but we don't have him any more.

Let that sink in. Our two best off the dribble offensive players are the 6'9 shooter and the 6'7 guy that isn't in the rotation.

7.) Brey has to come to a realization: You can't win scoring 50 in the ACC (if you're not playing Virginia). Run more sets instead of motion. Play small and run Goodwin more in the post (he's pretty good at getting position against smaller guards). Do something different, because this isn't working.

You remember those glory years when they made a tourney run and made us all look towards a bright future?

Yeah.... those days were fun.

Talking about a program that needs a breath fresh air. I am no expert by far In basketball but this is sad that a division one school can’t recruit a full roster year in and year out. The product on the court the last 2 or 3 years has not been good.

How busy is campus on a basketball gameday compared to a football game? I’m heading up tomorrow. I did 3 football games this year, but no basketball yet. How bad is parking? Thanks for any advice.

You shouldn't have any issues with parking. Campus is nothing like a football game.

We are 20 minutes away from knowing how the season is going to go.

If we fight back and win, that means we’ll find something to hang our hat on offensively.

If we don’t, I can see this snowballing into something worse than even last year.

Please let this be the return of attacking TJ Gibbs. I know Boston College has no rim protection, but it’s nice to see him get to the lane. I’d like to see better decision making, but baby steps.

This BC team will win five or six games and conference this year.

They are by no means great, probably not good. But they are not as bad as last season.

It’s unbelievable what happens when you actually make open shots.

Boston College can find guys that can make an open three, we can’t. Although, To be fair, they also have a point guard that knows how to find an open shooter.

Good two possessions Rex.

Yep, done. This could get ugly.

I’d say I won’t watch the games, but I will. But it’s a tough pill to swallow watching what we put out there. I’m not sure Laz played more than 10 minutes? I probably watched 5 to 6 possessions where Rex reached or gambled and caused a rotation that led to an open shot.

We are a bad offense team, so we keep putting out legitimately, without the walk on, the worst offensive lineup we can muster.

Exactly how we should lose that game.

Guess Brey misquoted, we’re not the JV team because that varsity team we played Wednesday is losing to Illinois by 15 at the half. Guess we’re the junior high team

Unbelievable

Does anyone else feel like brey is just worn out? I feel like he has no emotion this year

I guess I just don't get it. I don't know if this is stubbornness on Brey's part, he doesn't have confidence in certain guys, or what it is. I don't think, without some miracle, that we turn into a good team this year. But we should be better.

I was happy to see that version of Temple Gibbs. That guy was aggressive. I'll take some forced shots from close. But he can open things up.

But after that? Hubb hit some shots late, but where did he go defensively? I remember last year hearing how he was going to be a pest to opposing ball handlers. He's a statue this year. When he's engaged, he can still get after it. Problem is, he's engaged on about 10% of possessions.

Durham is a shot blocker. Wonderful. He got 4 blocks. How many offensive rebounds did we give up because he didn't actually box anyone out, or tried to block a shot when he had no chance in hell to get to it?

Rex is not very good. He tries. He tries hard. But so do I in pickup games. Doesn't mean I should be a 25+ minute a game guy in the ACC. I honestly lost count of how many times today he cost us a bucket because of being out of position. And he's a liability offensively. EDIT: He played 30 today.

So let's review.
- Juwan Durham is not a guy you can go to in the post, but he is constantly just taking up real estate.
- Rex Pfleuger can not create his own shot, and is shooting, wait for it, 28% from 3 (and that's excluding today's game).
- Hubb is just ok with the ball in his hands. A streaky shooter. Not great at penetration (but that's not all on him).
- If the Gibbs of today sticks around, that'll help. If not, he's just another guy that chucks three's from 4 ft behind the new line.
- Mooney needs space to operate. Yes, he would be good as a pick and pop/roll situation, but our guards haven't been good at it, and help defense is always available due to us having 2 guys on the court that just aren't threats. Why respect Rex or not play in the center of the lane on Durham?
- Goodwin either scores 16 or goes 1-10. There is no in between. There needs to be.
- Laz played 17 minutes today (was 2-3, where the miss a floater across the lane where he probably was fouled, and hit a 3). Huh?
- Djogo played 6 minutes. The fuck.

We have 8 scholarship players available. Fine. Let' accept the fact that, as of now, one of Goodwin, Hubb, or Gibbs will be awful. Even though it usually is 2 of them being awful, let's say for the sake of argument 2 of them get their shit together and play "OK".

At that point, the players that get the majority of the minutes CAN NOT BE Durham, Rex, and that guy. It just can't.

Why? Because I can't watch that shit anymore. If you're going to give up 73 to a BC team without their second best player, you're not going to hold other ACC teams under 60. Quit pretending we're playing line-ups for "Defense".

Sorry for the long posts, but Notre Dame basketball is therapeutic to me during a crazy time. And when they suck, bitching about them is the next best thing.

With guards like Cowan, that's why they are the Varsity team.

It's quite possible this team could go 9-22 or 10-21! That's just not acceptable. But I'm still going to watch my Irish! I think we are another 2-3 years away from being competitive again. Recruiting isn't awful and if we can just stay healthy for crying out loud.

It's getting harder and harder to watch an ND basketball game.

I think after this season we are going to see some changes. I'd like to see some new blood on the coaching staff rather than program guys. Brey seems worn down and you can tell by his excuses.

We had a good recruiting class last year and they are either getting hurt or not developing.

I miss the toughness of Jerian Grant, Pat Connoughton, Matt Farrell, Bonzie Colson, etc. This team is too soft.

Nothing against Bonzie, he played really well for ND but he bitched more to the refs more than anyone the court if he didn’t get a call. Dude was great but never knew how to keep his mouth shut.

I posed the question a few days back. Is part of the regression offensively the absence of Inglesby? Things went downhill when he left. Coincidence?

Things went downhill not with our offense but our guard play. Losing Ingelsby is absolutely one of the main problems here. I think we need to at least look for a new assistant to coach the guards and possibly with the front court as well.

ESPN 100 recruit Terrance Williams decommits from Georgetown

ESPN 100 recruit Terrance Williams decommits from Georgetown

https://www.espn.com/college-sports...ecruit-terrance-williams-decommits-georgetown

"ESPN 100 forward Terrance Williams announced Thursday that he was decommitting from Georgetown and reopening his recruitment

A 6-foot-6 forward from Gonzaga College High School (Washington, D.C.), Williams is ranked No. 78 in the 2020 class. He committed to Georgetown in July, choosing the Hoyas over Notre Dame and Michigan. "

Go get him, we could use some good recruiting news. He had interest before.
