The crazy thing is Brey offered 12 guys this cycle. 9 of them were in the top 55 in composite ratings on 247! That is some crazy crazy competitive recruitments that a program like ND isn't going to win, especially coming off an NIT and no tourney in the last two years. The 3 that weren't offered included Joe Girard who was Syracuse's recruit to lose, Tre Mitchell who wasn't a fit at ND anyway it turns out, and Chris Ledlum who was a perfect fit for ND! Ledlum was offered by ND in late July and was "offered" by Harvard in March (Ivy's can't offer, but you get the idea). Basketball recruiting is different from football recruiting where the recruiting is usually quicker and a 4 month head start from the top school in America was too much to overcome. ND didn't target a lot of guys in their shopping aisle which is disappointing. Kadin Shedrick, who signed with UVA, should've at least been offered. Harlond Beverly just signed with Miami and that kid was a big time late bloomer and under-recruited until the spring and should've been offered. Basketball recruiting might seem tough for ND because of their academic restrictions and their location, but in reality there are quite a few high academic kids who'd love to come to ND, but they've been doing a poor job identifying and recruiting the second tier 4 star recruits lately for whatever reason.

Twelve offers to mostly top 50 guys is absurd. Which too often ends up turning into a scramble to find a warm body. We should live in that 75-200 range with at least two dozen targets who fit our mold. Lots of great 4-5 year players in that range and project big men you can turn in to All-ACC bigs for their last two years on campus.

.8933 4* Maxwell Lorca-Lloyd - MA - PENN
NR 4* Franz Wagner - Germany - SF - UNDECIDED

So I can't speak to the system fit with Brey because I don't know exactly what he is looking for to fit in his system, but here's a list of dudes who were offered by IVY LEAGUE schools or Stanford and/or Virginia to showcase some high academic kids who fit into what ND might be looking for. The only player I included who is absolutely top of the list and elite is Drew Timme, but I figured if ND threw out an offer early then they might be able to get him on campus and who knows. Everyone after that is in the 60-200 range of the composite 247 rankings. Ismael Massoud was never offered and instead went to a coach who was on the hotseat and continues to be. He's an excellent shooter and brings that long frame at 6'8''-6'9'' that could turn into an elite stretch 4. Joel Brown is an energizer bunny and strong passer from the PG position. There are a lot of excellent prospects on that list and if ND takes a stab at even a few of them then I'd wager they'd end up with a couple. ND would be in great shape going into the season if they had Ismael Massoud, Joel Brown and Maxwell Lorca-Lloyd coming into the fold and that is the worst case scenario of that top group. The worst case scenario is actually finding out now that they offered one of those dudes off of that entire list and it was 4 months later than the school he'd eventually commit to.

Per Jeff Goodman, Justin Pierce is announcing tomorrow at noon.

Would be a good get for us.

Down to us, Michigan and UNC.

Thanks for sharing. Brey really needs this. Michigan could be a tough beat here with all of their outbounds.

I think unfortunately UNC and Michigan are his top 2. UNC has 3 of their starting 5 set in stone

C Garrison Brooks, JR
PF
SF
SG Brandon Robinson, SR
PG Cole Anthony, FR

Leaky Black likely gets a crack at the starting 3 spot with Pierce competing for the 3/4 spot with some other very talented dudes. Michigan has only really 2 spots locked in with Teske at C and Simpson at PG. Other than that they are likely to lose their 2,3, & 4. At that point a whole lot is up in the air and there’s a lot of opportunity for Pierce to fit right into that offense and play. They’ve got a lot of talented reserves ready to fight for open spots though. Notre Dame’s 5 could look special

C Juwan Durham, RS JR
PF John Mooney, SR
SF Justin Pierce RS SR
SG Rex Pfleuger RS SR
PG TJ Gibbs SR

That would be the most experienced starting 5 in the ACC from an age and experience perspective. From a talent perspective they’d be much better than last year. Pierce could be a key missing piece but unfortunately I think he’s headed to UNC or Michigan. Too bad too cause that starting 5 is Brey’s dream in terms of getting old and staying old.

I'm assuming it's been awhile since Pat touched a baseball. LOL

We do have 10 scholarship players next year, but lose Mooney/Gibbs/Rex.

I'm actually a bit surprised we didn't go the traditional transfer route. A freshman transfer that can red-shirt next year and be in the "class" with Carmody to try to get a bit more balance back.

Better be going back to basics this recruiting cycle. Get 3/4 freshman, with a grad transfer or two? That's a lot to ask in one year.

2 out of 3 failures in recruiting cycles get you fired. Bottom line is Brey has to be way way way better. The once out of every couple cycles they reel in 4-5 guys is an unsustainable model. ND needs to fill up on guys and let them come into the system and learn the Brey way. A poor man’s Izzo program wouldn’t be such a bad model. They go after the top dudes which is awesome but they fill up on program guys if they whiff on the Jaren Jackson’s. I’ve already mentioned it but ND needed 2-3 lower rated dudes this cycle so they could be sophomores or juniors before ND needs them. Instead ND will need freshman from the 2020 cycle to come in right away and be really good in order to even compete.

Pat Connaughton was on Jeff Goodman's Good and Plenty podcast. Pretty good interview for those interested.
