2017 or 2019 which season did you prefer?

I made a thread like this last year comparing the two undefeated regular seasons we have experienced in recent memory. I felt that this could lead to another fun discussion comparing two successful seasons that had some highs, lows, and a few “what ifs”

2017- After losing a heartbreaker to UGA we began a streak of dominating performance including the humiliation of our biggest rival in primetime at home. We ran with this momentum until unfortunately an old rival from our past humiliated us on national tv and had us questioning everything about what we had accomplished up to that point. In one of the glaring differences between the two seasons we unfortunately didn’t play our best against rival Stanford and any hope of the NY6 was dashed that night in Palo Alto. That disappointment aside we bring everything together for a big Bowl win against LSU to cap off a really good season compared to where we were the previous year.

2019- Started off very similarly. Dominating performances until an unfortunate loss to UGA. From here we didn’t blow as many teams out but we went into a bye week against another old rival from our past with hopes of keeping the playoffs/NY6 alive. Our rival destroys us and as a fanbase we wondered what went wrong with our program. This time however we rose to the occasion and finish the year out winning including dominating Stanford en route to another bowl in Orlando. The bowl was a more dominant performance compared to 2017 but the ISU was clearly not as quality of a win as LSU. All that aside we finish one game better than we did 2 years ago.

So which season did you enjoy more? I think even though we did finish with a better record this past year I enjoyed 2017 more. The domination of USC and ending the season with a win over a more respected program gives that season the nod for me. Even though I hated losing to Stanford that year (especially because we were prolly the better team) beating LSU on New Year’s Day was one of my highlights in my time as an Irish fan (the only other big bowl I had ever seen them win in my fandom was the cotton bowl in 1994 when I was 4 years old) so despite winning one less game I will reflect better on that season compared to this past one. That isn’t to say I didn’t love this year and think this was a bad year just what I prefer as fan?

What about the rest of IE, which season did you prefer?

2017. What jumps out for me is that ND had a really impressive win that season when they smoked a 11-2 SC from start to finish.

Both seasons had an embarrassing loss and a close loss to UGA. However, 2019 really didn’t have an impressive win that would garner any national respect.

Both seasons ended in satisfying bowl wins considering ND couldn’t control who the opponent was. That being said, the Citrus Bowl win over LSU was much more impressive.

Beat me to it,... but in my history as a die hard (1989 to now) my fav season is prob 92 or 93,...

For the question at hand,... prob 2017. I never really believed this season, there was maybe a hint of belief prior to Miami in 17.

2017 and it's not really close.

This season was very good but we were coming off an undefeated season, so expectations were higher. Our best win was... Navy? Virginia? Closer-than-it-should've-been USC? The team also lacked much in the star power department.

Two years ago came out of nowhere after a disastrous 2016, had that awesome night against USC, had a more impressive/exciting bowl win and had ridiculously-fun players to watch like Nelson and Josh Adams.

No complaints about 2019, but I'm hoping that 2020 is better than 2018.

Definitely 2017. Not a single marquee win in 2019. Much worse bowl victory. And while losing to Miami like we did sucked, getting housed by Michigan sucked even more.

2017, for sure. Solid defense, absolutely elite OL and running game, and a better resume.

This year was blah. Not one impressive victory (Navy our best win?) and getting absolutely demolished by Michigan was deflating and ruined the rest of the year. Yeah we did collapse this year, that is a low bar of success.

2017 was the first time in my life that I felt like we were actually elite. Never felt that during 2012 or 2018, or the other big seasons of my lifetime like 05, 06, 15 and this year.

Wimbush was ruining defenses in the red zone, Elko had the defense looking fantastic, and the OL was opening up absurd holes for Adams. It all came crashing down in Miami but up to that point, we were playing some terrific football.

We got one more win this year but the wind against a good usc team at night at home in dominating fashion was too much to not pick 2017. When you factor in the lower expectations that year and the new coaches I give 2017the nod. This year we played Georgia tough but we should have beat them in 2017. Not having a draft worthy RB this year and poor QB play the first half of the season made this years team look worse but this bowl win was a dominant one compared to the LSU squeaker. The loss to UM hurts more and we were still in it towards the end of the 3rd quarter but between Chip the Dip Long and a scared QB I have never seen a Kelly team mail in the 4th quarter like that. If we lose 31-14 instead of 45-14 we are probably playing on New Year’s Day.

2017 and the USC win for me. Hard to beat Coney and Tranquil at LB.

2017 by a mile. One bad loss, many great wins. Finished strong against an SEC team.

2015. One bad loss. One pretty ok win, maybe two. Finished strong against a 5 loss big 12 team.

Definitely 2017. Think of how low expectations were at the beginning of that season, and then the thrill of two top 15 beatdowns in a row. It was great for the national brand. And I'd take five Miami blowouts over that Michigan one. Ugh.

2017 definitely. Loved Adams and the o-line.
However, I feel better about 19 as a set up for a big year following. QB is settled, o-line looks like it should be better whereas after 17 it was obviously going to go backwards, I prefer Lea to Elko. I feel like we are a OC hire home run away from something legendary.

At first glance I say 2017. Coming off 2016 it was such a needed season. There was definitely some belief heading to Miami that we could really compete and deserve national respect. Then it all fell apart, only for us to beat LSU and see that the program was moving towards where it belongs.

However, I’m going to say 2019 only because this proves that Notre Dame is better as a program. How many of us expected to lose another game after Michigan? Probably most, especially with the way the VT game was playing out. Despite that, the team never quit and demolished a (yes 7-5) team in Iowa St. that everyone was terrified to play. I think we saw, again yes a weak schedule, that the program is much healthier.

2019.

If ND had looked the same team in November than they did in September and October, then it'd be 2017 no question, but they petered off considerably once Miami hit.

Difference between the 2017 and 2019 team is how they finished and how they responded to their proverbial pantsing. One sucked it up and kicked it into high gear, the other limped to the finish line.

Since someone threw in 2015 I'll rank em as follows:

2015- The offense was so fun to watch

2017- Josh Adams, the Oline, and the defense were dominant

2019- The offense struggled too much to make it entertaining until the last half of the season.

2017 by a mile. We waxed a PAC 12 Champion USC team 49-14. Dominated a good NC State team that talked a ton of shit all week long. Blew out a 10 win MSU team at MSU. Capped it off beating a good SEC team.

But coming out of the season and looking toward the future the 2019 is the brightest of those three.

The 2015 team lost Stanley, Fuller, Jaylon, Nick Martin, Prosise, Day, Farley and Max Redfield among others. The 2017 team lost two top ten draft picks in McGlinchey and Nelson, lost Durham Smythe and St. Brown, faced large quarterback questions, and other question marks all over the place. Then they lost the DC who had turned things around on that side of the ball.

The 2019 team's future outlook is better than at then end of 2015 and 2017.

Absolutely. I'm looking forward to 2020 immensely.
