They do have Weishar listed as 240 in the program!

Thinking about it,

  • Man we have a ton of big tight ends!
  • Boykin has unbelievable measurable! WOW! Double WOW!
  • There are all kinds of strength gains on the team; I have been hearing this for a while. But Joe bench pressing 400, is maniacal! Brain meet (meat) braun!
  • Don't look now but Jerry is listed as 6'7" tall. Can you imagine what they can do with the middle against teams with a shorter QB, or against field goal and extra point teams?

I wonder how much of this years impressive strength gains are due to the new blood in our strength program. And I wonder how much of the extra individualized attention is making a difference with marginal players shooting upward in performance?

Hansen needs to get his sh!t together. He looks more slobbish every year. Not only does he continue to get bigger, but he is also not keeping his appearance at the level of a big time reporter on the Notre Dame beat.

Take your ugly @ss white sunglasses off your head, trim your nasty beard and tuck your damn shirt in. Look the part, slobbo...

but "DUDE"

Interesting to hear him reference Jones as the 2nd TE on that 2 TE sets question.

I'm not surprised at all. I think most of us saw it coming. Maybe a little surprised he said it at the presser, only because he's a frosh.

To recap:

ST ?

Over/under 9 TDs between all of our TEs this year? That would be the most we've had....ever maybe?

Betting AJ has 4 or more himself during the second half of the season.
ST - I think his comments about seniors kind of goes both ways. I do like the names he referenced though.

Too Tall Jones 2.0?

Too Tall Tilly
I wonder what kind of vertical he has

He is not just a RB moving forward though correct, he'll be able to plug in at slot and such as needed still... or is this a full on complete move to the backfield??

Its an "audition" is the way BK said it. They are going to give him reps during the first part of camp and if it looks like it will stick, they will leave him there. If not, he'll get moved back to WR. So, no not permanent.

Kelly mentioned that he wants to see him be physical at RB and run north/south.

"he's getting a look" is what I thought I heard. So think he'll be practicing in both worlds for a while regardless.

LOVE TO HEAR THE TRUTH

LOVE TO HEAR THE TRUTH

"He knows he can put the ball wherever it needs to go. His confidence is real good for our offense," said Fuller. "He’s a lot more vocal (than Everett Golson). Talks a lot more. I think he’s a better leader than Ev.---247

"It’s real great," Fuller said, "and I believe it’s the same thing with every other receiver, because he’s real outgoing and he gets us all out there throwing on a daily basis. We’ve been throwing a lot.

"I feel like some of the guys never had a leader like that. He’s a real emotional guy, so I think it really surprises some of the guys and gets them more of that Malik boot. I think he’s doing a great job leading the offense."247

MZ from the start seems far more invested in just about every way (IMHO). Love it that he has the guys out throwing daily outside of practice. Peyton'ish.

JB was a great running back in HS, although his competition was piss-poor.

I'd really like to see him in the slot as well. He has great quick-twitch as OMM so often points out. Get him the ball in space, first two steps he's four yards ahead of anyone trying to check him. But I completely understand why BK would give him an "audition" at RB.

Kelly mentioned that he wants to see him be physical at RB and run north/south.

Joining him at running back will be Justin Brent. Up to 220 pounds, Brent is a logical move, after an impressive senior season in high school running the football and a stacked wide receiver depth chart.

Kelly made the decision recently, talking candidly about his conversation with Brent.

“I told him is if he takes the ball and runs downhill north and south, doesn’t bounce it outside—because I’m sure I’ve got two freshmen who are going to want to bounce it outside every time they touch it—if he takes it and he goes downhill and he plays physical, I’ll find some carries for him and I’ll get him on every special team,” Kelly said. “If he wants to do that, then I think I can get him some playing time.”

If you’re reading between the lines, it’s still clear that Brent’s role on this team still feels a bit on edge. That’s to be expected after the off-field headlines the Indianapolis native made last year, with Kelly pulling off any filter when discussing him.

“I think it’s going to be hard for him to get on the field because we have such great depth at the wide receiver position,” Kelly said. “Will it work? I don’t know. But he is a very gifted athlete. He’s big, he’s strong, so we’ll give it a shot and see if it does anything for us

nice FREE article on the benefits of 2 te sets

https://notredame.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1789626

Not to go all Pats-crazy like I have in the Deflate thread, but this is similar to what the Patriots did with Gronk/Hernandez and it was pretty much impossible to stop. They could go 5-wide one play due to their athleticism and make no substitutions and pound the ball the next play under center with the two TEs being able to play all over.

If you can go no-huddle with subbing and throw diverse looks at the defense it's going to be trouble for them.

What I'd love to see more than anything else is Alize in the Slot and Smythe lined up as a traditional TE. Alize is supposedly a massive cover issue for a LB, and in theory we should be able to pound the ball if they want to put a DB on him.

I've always been conservative going into the season: have learned better.

This team, I'm very optimistic. Jones...IMG!!!

Seriously...if we dont get pressure on the QB from the DE, BvGs defense is worthless and a liability. They better figure it out.

This is kind of where I'm at with the D too. I'm worried about this "great" defensive backfield holding coverage with a four man pass rush, two ends closing the pocket. That is where we are weak IMO.

I like BK saying Day is going to move around. Think he realizes we need to get to the QB, just like most of us. So that is a start. But we really need someone (Trumbetti?) to step up.

The offense, assuming we hold on to the ball, I have no worries.

I thought in BVGs defense the key is to get pressure on the QB by blitzing and running zone blitzes, not by rushing 4 down line men. I mean as long as the secondary is not a liability his scheme should get pressure on the QB.

Am I wrong on how his scheme is supposed to work?

As I understand it he runs a lot the base 4-2-5. The blitzes do come from everywhere and especially on 3rd downs with speed rushers from the ends. I have seen him do many different versions but the goal is the same. Put pressure on the QB and contain him and give him zero time on 3rd down. With 2 linebackers and a nickle back its imperative for the DL and especially the DEs getting pressure consistently so the QB is under durress consistently.

I recommend watching the Louisville, North Carolina and Northwestern games for what happens when the DLs and DEs dont get to the QB. Hopefully Gilmore makes an huge impact here but I am currently in wait and see mode on the defense.

While I understand everyone's concerns about where the QB pressure will come from, I am guardedly optimistic about this defensive units' chances because of one thing that was mentioned in the presser: leadership. Joe S., Jarrett G., Sheldon D., Mathias F., Kev. R, not to mention Jaylon and Max. Just a whole lot of leadership and a lot of game experience. Teams and units that play cohesively, inspired and with communication, have success. It is hard to imagine this defense with the talent that they have not playing inspired and with great communication, those are some pretty important keys to success.
