Nice win, good movement from that clip. Did that goalie stop anything high? Looking forward to the Denver matchup, should be a wide open offensive game. I've heard they play suspect defense like you guys said. I really like NDs ability to break defenses down in a few ways. Limit their lay up goals, win the game.

Close game between #6 Yale and St. john's switching to an orange ball because of the snow. A solid inch or so down on the ground right now and it appears to be getting heavier. Fun game on ESPN3.

Yale would score off the faceoff in OT to win. Great game.

So ND lost 11-10 in OT to Denver yesterday. There are a lot of takeaways to be had from the game.

First, by my count ND scored 10 goals on 19 settled offensive possession. An offensive efficiency greater than 50% is impossibly good. It's like shooting 65% from the field for a whole basketball game.

Second, the refs absolutely hosed Notre Dame. Notre Dame was up 3 with a little over 10 to play when Kavanagh got fouled like crazy going to the cage. Not only did they not call any fouls on Denver, but then Kavanagh got a 1 minute non-releasable penalty for expressing his displeasure. Denver promptly scored 2 goals as a direct result of the penalty and would then tie it up at the end of regulation.

Third, faceoffs made a huge difference in this game, but especially the officiating of the faceoffs. Notre Dame was assessed a number of completely bogus violations on the faceoffs and that had a HUGE impact on the game.

Fourth, the defense was very good at times, and Shane Doss was excellent in cage. So it's good to see them starting to jell back there.

Fifth, it's hard to nitpick the offense at all but I'm really wondering about the long term viability of using Ossello for faceoffs and as a primary player on 1s if the other part is going to be Will Corrigan who can't create offense himself. They really keyed on Perkovic in the second half and our efficiency really took a hit.

Lastly this goal was fantastic:

I did not watch the game -and don't know much about lacrosse- but one of the Inside Lacrosse reporters said on Twitter that he thought the altitude issue was getting to ND late in the 4th? Is that likely?

From my experience, altitude plays a HUGE factor in games at Denver. Players get really winded as the game goes on playing their normal minutes.... the issue is especially exacerbated if you're in a possession hole playing lots of defense against Denver's "deliberate" offense being aided by flags.

I just followed the game on gamecast. It seemed like Doss had a great game. It also seems like they lost this game simply because they couldn't get the face-offs. Corrigan said it made the offense feel less patient when they did finally get a possession so they weren't quite themselves either. I really hope ND gets them back....in the finals...and hammers them down!

8-2 ND at half. UVA got a man up situation with 33 seconds left and scored to close the half.

Wynn is ridiculously good. Can't believe he's only a freshman! 11-7 with 4:39 left. Huge face off win for ND though...

Jack Near rocked and injured. Uh oh. Could be a shoulder or a wrist, or even his arm.

11-8, 3:29 left. UVA all the momentum.

11-9 ND final. Nice win, dominated pretty much the entire game until they looked very shaky w during the UVA comeback. ND got lucky in the sense that UVA lost their top player for the season with an ACL tear on Thursday. So their offense looked anemic for most of the game.

I thought that ND looked fast and polished and dangerous all over with the ball. We just need to HAVE the ball more. Face-offs got better down the stretch. Defensively the guy to our goalie's leftside looked like an eraser ... enjoyed watching him thump and wall and shuffle [Lacrosse's ZMart?].

And yes, the rookie was impressive --- nice to have so many great weapons who can also pass though.

Notre Dame just shutout Ohio State 9-0 on ESPNU. Could've easily been 15-0. DOMINANT defense, and Shane Doss was fantastic not letting in any garbage shots.

Ohio State beat Denver last week 13-11 and was #12 in RPI so this is a big win. Notre Dame hasn't lost to the Buckeyes since 2004... this was the first shutout for the Buckeyes in this century, and I can't remember the last time Notre Dame skunked someone.

EDIT: People are saying that this might be the first time EVER that a top 20 team has been shut out. Wow.

I like your thinking. Give the defenders 6 foot metal poles to whack people with.

...but seriously, Jaylon Smith with a long stick would be the greatest thing ever.

Always surprising to see a shutout, but the first time I watched Landis play I thought: Gee, one more guy like that on the team and nobody'd score on us.

After Syracuse's dismantling of Duke today, here's how the early RPI sits:
1. Syracuse
2. Notre Dame
3. Maryland
4. Cornell
5. Virginia
6. Duke
7. Denver
8. Marquette
9. Georgetown
10. North Carolina

Italicized are all Notre Dame opponents. Ohio State checks in at #14, so that's a quality win. And Dartmouth checks in at #22, which is surprisingly close to a quality win. Michigan is the only team dragging down our SOS.

Next up is #1 Syracuse in what will be a #1 vs #2 battle at home. Notre Dame has little to no chance in that without winning faceoffs... and with Jack Near out, wins seems unlikely. Syracuse's offense is too good to earn enough possessions through just good defense. ND will need to be at least 35%-40% at the dot to have a chance.

Then its #6 Duke, #8 Marquette, #10 UNC, the ACC tournament, and then #27 Army to close the season. Any two wins in this stretch is likely good enough to get ND in the tournament.

Another crazy season already. I didn't see anything last week from Cuse to think they would blow Duke off the field today. Very nice win over the Bucknuts, great defense. I still think the forcing of the crease can be an issue, but I feel confident against the Orange. They've always thrived off playing wide open and dodging off the pass. The Irish continue to play stout, I really think a W is coming.

Thanks LAX! What's the verdict with Near?

I heard it was a separated shoulder (or some other sort of shoulder injury). I think he'll back this season, maybe even this weekend.

Hopefully he's back sooner than later, but no need to rush.
I think it's going to be a good game today. ND's face offs will be frustrating again, but the cuse has done all of their damage inside the dome.
It will be interesting to see if ND's defense looks as dominant as they did last week.

Saw ND is on ESPNU today at noon vs. the 'Cuse. Apparently Syracuse is the real deal in lacrosse. Go Irish, beat their ass...

Good guys up 3-2 after one. Jack Near started the game but I don't think he's close to 100%.

That perkovic goal got me pumped up

I know next to nothing about lacrosse, but last year I watched them play live a couple of times and I could tell immediately that this kid (then a freshman) was a true difference maker. Just a beast. What a sick goal that was!

And Doss is playing like a friggin' boss. 5-2 Irish in the 2nd quarter.
