I think that would've been interesting to see as well but keep in mind that Diaco wasn't against playing freshman. In fact we had some pretty impactful freshman during his tenure. KR, Aaron Lynch, and Jaylon Smith come to mind. Day played quite a bit as a freshman on the best dline in the country. I honestly just don't think Redfield was getting it as much as we expected.

Wasn't trying to imply Bobby didn't play freshman. I remember reading for weeks on how close Redfield was to seeing the field and he almost never saw the field.

Exactly. No one will convince me that we are switching to a 4-3 base; Kelly has been very clear that we are not.

Kelly also pointed out that we had 4 down linemen 50% of the time last year. It's not a stretch to think, given the way recruiting cycles have gone, that we will continue to see the 4-3 just as much as a true 3-4.

I said that.

What I would love to see, in a natural 3 down progression of a successful defensive series is this (with Field to the left and Boundary to the right):

1st Down and 2nd down (depending on second down distance):
Ishaq - Day - Jones - Rochelle (or Hounshell if fully healthy)
Jaylon - Grace - Okwara
Luke - Redfield - Shumate - Russell

With behind them:

Trumbetti / Utupo - Springman - Hayes/ Matuska -Rochelle / Hounshell
Councell - Deeb / Moore - Randolph / A freshman
Butler - Baratti - Hardy / Collinsworth - Riggs

3rd down: (4-5 yards+)

Ishaq - Day - Jones - Okwara
Jaylon - Grace
Luke - Riggs (Nickel) - Redfield - Shumate - Russell

With behind them:

Trumbetti - Hounshell - Rochelle - A freshman passrusher
Councell / Randolph - Deeb / Moore
Butler - Watkins (Nickel) - Baratti - Hardy / Collinsworth - Kinlaw

I hope he is back but do you really think Grace makes opening day? My gut says maybe mid season to truly have an impact. (I know the above it what you would love to see, just looking for thoughts)

Sorry if already discussed/mentioned, but is Malone moving strictly to WR or is he in that "Z RB/WR" role? Same for Carlisle? If not, that leaves only Bryant, McDaniel and Folston as true RBs. Seems kinda thin.

I haven't seen it elaborated on yet. I've always thought Amir would be a better slot receiver...he gets to his next gear quicker than anyone on the team and he has amazing hands in practice. But then he shit his pants and lost all confidence and dropped everything last year, so I don't know. If he gets his confidence back, I think he can be a real weapon for the offense.

I think while Mahone and Amir might be listed at the slot, I have to think one of them will be doing some cross-training, even if they have switched Alford to RB's only. Like you said, too think there...

The battle between Bryant and Redfield is pure competitiveness. Very close but i think Redfield won. Stanley looked little soft. My back is broken only watching these battles

Has anyone discussed the implications of the moves Kelly announced, particularly when discussing incoming freshman. Like Kelly talked about Drue Tranquill coming in and maybe contributing on offense. With Onwualu's move that may make you wonder. Anybody have anything?

Kelly seemed to light up talking about Ishaq, called him a "different" guy then he's ever been. Would be great if he decided to reach his potential this year. So far he's been Steve Filer 2.0, lots of potential not much production.

Great video, lots of competition to go around.
That's the best shape Day has ever been in. Looked svelte.
Okwara looks ready to go too. It's always great to see the gains the guys have made working their tails off in the winter.
Love the team that has been built over the last couple of years with some pretty nice depth. Agree one of Amir/Mahone will be a RB but both ready to play if needed at either position.
Jarron looked pretty good against Stanley but that Bryant vs Redfield matchup.
Good to see spring has started and time to get back to work!

I just saw the video of the PC and two things I saw that haven't been discussed much.

New defensive philosophy builds on old :
The Jet's philosophy with setting the edge with a strong side defensive lineman and flowing everything around that, including disguising pressures and multiple personnel groupings was clearly laid out from the onset.

Talk about defensive back-end player evaluation :
Kelly discussed in detail that the db's have been evaluated in two categories, outside-in or inside out. Kelly mentioned Riggs as the first that could be both, but then he mentioned Farley as like the number two possibility. Interesting.

I picked up on that as well. You could almost sense that while BK was happy with Diaco establishing an "attitude" on defense, he is ready to take it to the next level. Almost insinuating that Diaco wasn't capable of doing it. BK seems super confident in BVG's coaching abilities.

3 or 4 times in the presser BK was asked about replacing Tuitt/Nix and how he was going to generate pressure, and he made it very clear that it wasn't even a thought in his mind and that this defense/BVG will get pressure and be very good.

IDK, I'm leaning towards GB winning that battle, there were a couple instances that Redfield just got out muscled and GB pulled him almost 5 yards without resistance from Redfield even though you know he was trying. See 1:35 on that film, GB pulled him from the 21 yard line back to near the 26 before Redfield knew what happened. And plus, if you notice, they start on the 20 yd line, at the end of the drill they ended up on the 21/22 in favor of GB.

No matter who won, was definitely a greatly battle to hold me over for the next week or so until another great highlight.

Of course you did, to bad they had there shirts on right?

At least put them in tank tops BK!

Laugh at me all you want, but anyone who wouldn't watch that tire fight between those two Greek Gods if it were shirtless cast the first stone, lol.

Too bad Hercules went pro because I would have loved to see him and maybe Ishaq/Rochelle/Okwara go at it (in tanks or shirtless).

How can anyone tell if Ishaq is different from watching him run around in long johns and pulling a tire?

I'll feel better if Kelly's still saying this after fall practice with pads.

i am fully aware that my opinion and desires hold zero weight to the ND football program.....but i'd LOVE to see ishaq play full time DE...that's his natural fit.

SIAP

did anyone else notice that Lombard and Elmer are listed as Tackles?

perhaps gonna see who fits best there in order to build depth and replace martin since they both already have experience at guard...not to mention with guys like bivin, hanratty, hegarty and montelus ready to compete on the interior....we're building some pretty good depth on the OL
