trumbetti should be a getting a nice bump to finish off the rankings for 2014. atleast by rivals, which is lowest on him from the beginning. every report raved about him during the week of UA practice

From Coach D on ISD, on what he hopes the lineup looks like next year:

I think the personnel will be the basically the same regardless of what the base defense is. Here is what I HOPE the starting lineup
looks like:

DE/CAT Ishaq Williams
DT/DE Sheldon Day
NG Jarron Jones
DE Isaac Rochell (3-4) or Romeo Okwara (4-3)
LB Jaylon Smith
LB Michael Deeb
LB Nyles Morgan
SS Elijah Shumate
FS Max Redfield
CB KeiVarae Russell
CB Cole Luke

I am assuming that Jarrett Grace won't be 100%.

A lot of inexperience, but the talent is really solid.

looks like he just put the guys he presumes to be our 11 best out there, hopefully the staff takes a similar course so we don't have a repeat of Farley stealing time from Redfield.

Did he explain why Grace wasn't ahead of Deeb? Seems weird to me that he'd be that badly limped still.

With a new DC, experience probably won't be as paramount as it had been as a factor in who starts. Talent probably has a better chance now of starting early, considering everyone will be on an even footing in terms of scheme knowledge. Obviously game experience stills means a lot, but I expect we will see some young talent emerge as starters.

Yeah he had a broken fibula right? I thought those were like 2 month injuries. He should be fine for spring ball.

thought it was more of a compound fracture?

was always under the impression that he'd be lucky to be cleared a go for the beginning of fall camp

I freaking LOVE that lineup. Get the talent on the field. It's a perfect year to get these guys experience because the offense SHOULD put up a ton of points. Sets everything up for a monster 2015 season.

The Deeb call is really interesting. I am excited to see him get reps in the spring and fall.

The best part about that projected lineup is that we could project it all the way out to 2015, too, with the exception of Ishaq. And we will have some good options for plugging that spot.

I am personally very high on Deeb, I would love to see him get serious PT next year. I am not fond of Moore other than when it is an obvious run play. I would much rather see Deeb get PT than Moore.

im definitely excited to see what Deeb can do this year, not saying he will be a full-time starter but I definitely think he will contribute heavily

To me, this would suggest that the staff is committed to winning in 2015 and developing in 2014, which is A-OK by me! I think losing Tuitt sucks, but is the best thing for exactly that. Get the kids the PT in '14 so they will be ready for war in '15. Would LOVE to see the above take the field in September!

I don't know if Grace had a compound fracture, but he broke his tibia and maybe also his fibula

isn't that a compound fracture?

i always understood breaking both was considered compound.....but not a medical or science major

There is some brilliant stuff in this thread. I think the mods should move it to a thread titled, "2014 Defensive starting lineup!"

My hats off to a couple of posters Ul, Ironman, rtn2, Stl, Nasty, and the rest of you know who you are!

Two things to add;

Thing 1 : the new DC has run all his players from a two point stance at times. Unlike the old DC, they have been in attack mode. Not stand back and wait and see mode.

Thing 2 : Nelson may get some time, but I think Mustipher is the most likely of the young uns to play early, and that would be inside. I think we will be with three on the outside, and that will be set; Stanley and Elmer the returners, with McGlinchey garnering time, he is too good to keep off the field. (Here is a guy 6'8" that may be fast enough to play kick coverage on special teams!)

Nelson can move in, so I think there is a possibility that he could see time, but remember the Hiestand paradox is that even though we graduate two of the best offensive linemen we have had in years, (Martin and Watt), the bar will be much higher for playing time next year.

The great thing about both the offensive and defensive depth charts that could be implemented for 2014 is that we should only lose 1 defensive (Ishaq) and 2 offensive (Lombard and Niklas) starters / key contributors.

I agree with this statement.
Next season is going to be a completely different team than what we've become accustomed to under Coach Kelly.
This team is going to score and will be playing with the lead... a lot.
The bend but don't break philosophy is anti productive with this kind of offense
They need to run an attacking style of defense that will force some turnovers.

Of course once they establish a big lead, they can go back to the "keep everything in front of you" to grind out some clock.

I think BVG will run a hybrid 3-4 much like he did at Auburn and way back when he was with Ga. One concern for me is the fact that while at Auburn the defensive players never really seemed to get what he was coaching them. He was very intense on the sideline and was visibly upset with players missing tackles, out of position, blowing reads, etc. I think whoever can figure his aggressive, complex system out first will have the advantage for playing time. The guy is a defensive genius - even if he struggled his time at Auburn. If the Irish players figure it out, it should be a fun defense to watch. I don't think he knows what bend, don't break means.

Thanks for the insight, much appreciated. I know it has been said he is a great recruiter, from your experience do you believe he is a good recruiter?

Don't really know how he is on the recruiting front. His time at Auburn was so short I don't know if he ever really got going on that front. He always had studs at Ga when he was there. His style of defense should help in the fact that it lets players play.

Two more things:

Few have raised the bar on quality posts like Ironman.

With his point, we only lose three by graduation from '14 to '15, there will be two other groups to watch; the changes by early entry in the NFL draft, which should be what top recruits are looking at, and those youngsters that improve their level play so much that they shift the entire teams standard of performance upward! Some projected starters could be out of jobs, therefore. It will be interesting to watch.

Seo a Ironman ardú ar an mbarra!

Thanks, I can't wait to see his defense in action. I liked Diaco but I prefer an attacking style defense so I am ecstatic about this hire.

It will be interesting to see what happens with Councell. He was playing great before his injury and could be a candidate to move to MLB with Jaylon locking down the outside.

Springman and Rochelle/Jones/ Day

Jaylon/Councell/Grace/Williams and Okwara
