Base is 18 assuming Eifert goes pro and Jake Golic and Stockton don't get 5th years.

Potential 5th years include Calabrese, Fox, Martin, Watt, Tausch, and Wood.

Does anyone else think Wood goes pro?

I think based on the performance he had this past season if he has another one or even better he will go pro...IMO.

I would like to see Martin and Watt come back but I think Martin will definitely leave.

I can see Calabrese and Fox looking for 5th years if they don't have stellar years to make them think they are ready for the NFL. Based on how recruiting LBs this season goes it will be a toss up if Kelly will bring them back.

I think it really depends on this season. He showed us what he is capable of and he has the potential to have a repeat year or even better.

I agree with you on all those aspects.

Calabrese does have a 5th year, according to UND.

Player Bio: Carlo Calabrese - UND.COM - University of Notre Dame Official Athletic Site

I'd be surprised if both he and Fox return for 5th years though. I'd think BK would want to work in an heir-apparent. That's one of my favorite things about BK in comparison to Weis ... he works in younger guys where he can so they have some idea what they are doing out there when they have to take over for graduated guys. And we have some promising inside backers in the pipeline. Fox and Calabrese's return may depend on who we get in the 2013 recruiting class.

18 as in only 18 open scollies for freshman? Another small class will mean another year of a lot of slow play right?

I do, because I think he will have a great season in 2012.

I am not sure why this is considered "insider" information. I have a spreadsheet in excel that states the same thing...

18 that we can be more or less sure of. That number assumes that Stockton, Eifert and Jake Golic don't return and that Wood, Calabrese, Fox, Watt, Martin and Tausch all do return. So we could have as many as 24 spots, but my (completely and utterly uninformed) guess is that it will be more like 20.

This coming off a class of 16 (hopefully 17). And yet the $EC teams continue to roll in 28-29 guys a year without batting an eye. The field is not level, don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

Good Lord, I would hope that Jake doesn't get much consideration for a 5th yr. (scholarship-wise anyway). IF he wants to come back, old man Mike should take one for the team and pay his way! It's not like he couldn't afford it. I'd much rather see BK use that schollie on a NEW "much needed" recruit than what the Irish would ever get out of Golic; who will never be a potential top-notch starter!

He might, but he doesn't have ideal size for an NFL RB. If he has another good year, I'd put his chances for taking a 5Y at 50/50.

I would like to see Martin and Watt come back but I think Martin will definitely leave.

Not sure where that's coming from, other than general pessimism. Floyd, Te'o, and Eifert were all far more likely to jump early than Martin, yet each one of them stayed. Our OL was good in 2011, but they were exposed by most of the top teams we played. Unless Martin and our OL have a tremendous 2012 campaign, I think both Watt and Martin are likely to return.

Thing about running backs is they have a short shelf life. If he has his degree and stays healthy next season I see no reason for him to stay for a 5th year.

Martin and Wood will have graduated though, making their decision different than Floyd's last year and Te'o's and Eifert's this year. I don't know if the ultimate decision will be to stay or comeback next year, it'll just be a little different process than leaving after 3 years.

Pessimism is a strong word for my statement. Nothing negative about it it's just a point of view I see potentially happening.

Like irishog said Floyd, Te'o, and Eifert won't have 5th years like Martin. Apples/oranges. Martin played well the last two seasons and I can see him having a great year this year with his skill and veteran experience. By end of next year I feel ND has a healthy stable of OL that you won't see a hiccup in the transition of new personnel.
