Gene Smith will get fired and there will be a huge shakeup in the staff after the season. My guess is he will probably take the Wisconsin job later on. There is no light at the end of the tunnel here in Jacksonville.

Yes there is. Jacksonville will be the team thats moved to London or to LA. The Bills are going to move to Toronto. In the end look for 2 teams in LA in the future.

Ron Caragher head coach of the University of San Diego will be next head coach at San Jose State.

Caragher had replaced Jim Harbough as head coach at San Diego after he left for Standford.

RT @TomMulhernWSJ: #Badgers set to hire Utah State's Gary Andersen. Source confirms he's the choice.

hmmm...sounds like they had to settle there.

Hmmm I don't know seems like a pretty good coach. Runs power football offense, turned that program around. Remember this is the team that almost beat wisconsin at Madison, lost by a missed field goal in the last seconds of the game. Think Barry took note?

I think if he were the choice he would have probably been announced 2 weeks ago.

The Utah State defense was the real deal this year. I think the hire was fine.

Maybe he wasn't the first choice. You can the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th choice and still be a great choice. Like with everything time will tell.

Might not be there first choice, not many schools get there first choice ( see Tennessee). Heck couple years ago a school with a lot of tradition didn't get there second choice, that would be Notre Dame. To say they setteled I think might not be correct did they get there number one guy no, did they get a good coach that can win in Madison I think so.

its a legal requirement in WI that you must wait 2 weeks to fill any state job. Hence the lack of rush to for Alvarez to make the hire.

something just seems like there should have been more interest in the job from fish from a bigger pond than what there was. maybe i'm wrong, but wisconsin seems like a pretty good job and i would think that many would line up for it if it were open. perhaps this is telling of the original reason that bilemma left in the first place.

Why? Have you watched this Utah State team at all the past two years. This team is for real. Team seems really well coached play hard and physical, I just don't see how you see this as such a bad hire. This is the team at the beginning of the year was supposed to be the best non BCS team in the country. I would still put them up against any non BCS team.

Just read up a bit more on this hire. What's interesting is the Alvarez made it clear what he wants the Wisconsin offense to be. He has no intention of Wisconsin becoming Oregon to say the least. Gary Anderson at Utah State ran up tempo spread offense. So it will be interesting to see what happens. Maybe he will keep the current offensive staff at UW in place.

Gary Anderson coaching background though is mostly on defense (his defense's at Utah State were rock solid) so he will be great for Wisconsin on that side of the ball.

this is the same team that an average Toledo team had on the ropes if not for poor QB play and play calling in the red zone. this guy was one bad quarter from toledo away from not looking so rosey. maybe i'm wrong and i'll be the first to admit it if it happens, but the jury is definitely still out here. throw in the fact you are hiring a guy with probably no background in the midwest, which is where wisconsin makes its living on the recruiting trail.

Its not like Utah State has more talent than Toledo. These are 2 marginally but equally talented teams you are talking about here. It is not like say OSU struggling to beat Toledo.

You are right though, jury is still out. I think it can work but we will have to see. An article I read mentioned recruiting as the big question mark. You got UM putting together top 5/top 10 classes under Hoke and you got Urban Meyer being Urban Meyer, so yes recruiting is going to be something to watch.

Man. You're tough. The guy had Utah State five points from being undefeated this year. Utah State. They had a top ten scoring defense and will finish ranked in the top 20.
Based on who else interviewed, it appears Alvarez wanted someone with college head coaching experience, so that takes a lot of names off the table. Madison's a good job but but there are 25 or so that are comparable or better, so it'd be hard to pull, say, an Al Golden. As a bonus, his bowl game is done so he can start tomorrow with no hard feelings.
He probably wasn't their top top choice, but he seems like a solid hire. Only time will tell for sure.

it reminds me of illinois hiring beckman, but at least he had midwest recruiting pedigree....i really thought this was gonna be a home run hire with the type of program wisconsin has built. you guys are sold i'm not, but i'm flexible and my mind can change.

two games they were close in were against an average wisconsin team, and an offensive bilemic BYU team (whom i'm aware we struggled against as well, but they have a solid Defense)

FWIW, I think "recruiting roots" is an overrated job qualification for coaches. Sure it helps but I think it should be at or near the bottom of a coaching search check list.

agree in parts, but i don't think i would consider it overrated. think it helps to know the area and have previous relationships within a certain area.
