Well deserved. If you are one of the top 3 or so TE's in a class you should definitely be in the top 40-50 if you are using 247's NFL draft analogy as your barometer.

Who does he compare to on our current roster, skill-set wise?

247 moved Jalin Conyers above him. Kid plays 2A Panhandle ball in TX. That makes no sense. If you are drafting football players for HS, Michael Mayer is a Top 10 pick. Rare combo of LB w/ DE size & WR in a TE body AND he's doing it at the top school in KY which isn't a joke... Won every Defensive award in KY this year. Was top receiver/TE at The Opening. Conyers has no business in front of him.

Arik Gilbert on the other hand...??? Yeah, he's the #1 TE.

Had 1400+ yds receiving on the #1 team in ATL. When the XFL announced they were coming back, I said he would be the #1 pick in their draft. lol

Nobody?

Kmet most likely, but I think Mayer will be just an overall better version lol.

He's got the potential to be a realllllllly good in-line blocker, based on how physical he plays on both sides of the ball... but he's got enough skills as a receiver that you're probably going to split him out more often than putting him in-line as long as you have another capable in-line TE, in which case Mayer is going to absolutely abuse DB's both in blocking and as a receiver.

I think it's bananas to project any TE to be better than KMet. If he could be regraded he'd be a 5-star and the #1 TE within 3 years of his class, either way, IMO.

He's going to be Gronk in the NFL.

I take it George Kittle was in the class of 2012?

Arik Gilbert is within 3 years of Kmet so no, he wouldn't have been #1 this year.

To my untrained eye, Kmet reminds me more of Gronk, a bigger bulkier player who runs more robotic but still very effective. Mayer reminds me of Jimmy Graham, very smooth and fluid. I think both are going to have very productive careers at all levels of football.

247 is stupid. Tyree ran the fastest 40 at the opening and also dominated drills at the opening and 247 dropped him like 20 spots or something. I know a lot of y’all don’t like Pyne and think he is drastically overrated. But 2 of 3 services have him as a 4 star tip 200 recruit...and those services are not 247.

Coming out of HS, I'd take Mayer over Kmet in a second.

Kmet has the bigger frame, but Mayer is just an all-around complete TE. Kmet was an imposing receiving TE, but had questions about his in-line blocking. Mayer doesn't have those question marks. He's a great receiving TE prospect and a great in-line blocking TE prospect. I'd say, if Kmet were to leave, Mayer would find his way on the field as a freshman and play a lot.

5-star and the #1 TE in this class. Gilbert is elite, and an athletic specimen, but Mayer is a better TE.

People don't like Pyne? Why? I get that he's not big and he's not going to wow people with his arm or mobility, but I'd say he's shown he is at least a solid 4-star QB. Perhaps not Phil or Buchner levels of sheer elite prospect, but still good.

I think most services have him as such. A good prospect, just not an elite one.

There's no way to back up this claim. We haven't seen either lined up attached & blocking. There are stats to back up Gilbert being the best "TE" in the country if you believe a guy who lines up in the slot and out wide is a "TE". ATL hasn't seen this collection of size, speed & hands since Megatron.

I don't care if he's a 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 star as long as he can compete at a high level and be a difference maker.

Cov Cath puts Mayer in-line a lot, I think. At least they did in the 2.5 games I watched.

They had him on the line through the first quarter a lot, and then split him out in the second quarter when they really want to get moving and open the game up.

I also saw him lead blocking and taking the occasional carry as a fullback near the goal line, and he's a devastating MIKE backer, so really he's like Cole Kmet, Brock Wright, and Troy Niklas rolled into a single player.

Mayer and Watts could be our two best defensive recruits if they wanted to be lol
no kidding and its a good problem to have. lou holtz always said you put your fastest and best athletes on defense. I could see watts moving to safety but I would be shocked to see mayer move from TE.

Mayer would be a candidate to move if Botelho wasn't in the class...

Defensively, Mayer is the 'power' version of Botelho, in terms of versatility and experience.

I know they play him in line. You can see that on his junior film. But he does not have any film blocking as a TE. If you say he’s a Brock Wright level blocker then OK.

He's great at washing his man down or kicking him up/out, as you would expect based on his size and physicality.

He's going to be just fine blocking in-line at ND once he gets some work under his belt... but ND might not be asking him to do that, depending on Takacs being around for a full 5 years and how Bauman grows.

Im not sure about all of this Offense or Defense talk, when it comes to Mayer....

IMO, you simply ask Tyler Buchner where he wants Mayer to play, and thats that! (Italics???)

Won the KY 5A state title.

Had 5 rec for 68 yds and was the game's leading tackler with 9.

On to basketball season unfortunately.

Dude put on a show! Tackling with bad intentions, taking handoffs and running with bad intentions, catching passes and getting YAC with bad intentions...

I’m sure he’d be an animal on defense but from what I’ve seen he has elite ball skills and locate/tracking the ball. I don’t mess with that unless that were to change. Downfield TE threats are rare and huge for an offense.
