Lots of updates. 2022 recruit with a two year mormon mission which makes BYU and Utah probably the toughest competition, but he's getting love from schools all around the country with tons of offers.

Can someone refresh my memory.....if he signs a LOI but goes on a mission, is he still bound by the LOI when he returns from said mission if he never enrolls during the 2 year period?

Further, do we get to keep his roster spot open until 2022? And then we can just bank on having him as one of our previous class commits?

That's dope if so. Two additional years to grow into his body then start the work

He's not a counter towards the 85 until he enrolls presumably in '22.

Yeah but those Mormon missions are often in places where they can't work out and eat food that causes you to lose weight. Places where the locals weigh 95 lbs.

Or maybe they'll send him to France like Mitt Romney.

I know that Taysom Hill, QB, signed with Stanford initially, but, after his mission, he had changed his mind and then signed with BYU. He could have been released by Stanford. While a school may keep in touch with the player while on a mission who may work out to some degree, the recruit is not in football shape. While the school is not bound to the player, not keeping a place for him on his return would impact any future recruitment of LDS players. Stability in the coaching staff would be another factor in both's decision-making. The "Big Uglies" may need to redshirt their first year back, meaning they could be twenty-five when they graduate.

Five Stanford players on the 2018 roster have served two year Mormon missions: fifth-year guard Brandon Fanaika in South Florida, sophomore outside linebacker Gabe Reid in American Samoa, redshirt freshman fullback Houston Heimuli in Indianapolis, freshman wide receiver Simi Fehoko in South Korea and freshman outside linebacker Tangaloa Kaufusi in Taiwan. ILB Sean Barton served his mission in the West Africa nations of Benin and Togo.

If he signs with the ND, I'm sure the Elder in charge of his assignment will skip Australia or Argentina and send him straight to South Sudan or Upper Mongolia.

I can't remember us having much luck with the mormons in the past... other than beating them on the field

Gilman, MTA & Moala right now. Liufau on the way

Some kid named Manti... plus Justin Utopo & Kona Schwenke (RIP)

Who am I forgetting?

There have been some minuses in the past but no need to name names.

Chris Badger ended up being like 130 lbs LOL. One of the greatest high school hit films of all time, though

That is what jumps out to me when I think of ND and mormons when they take their mission

I think the LOI is only binding for one year if the student athlete never enrolls. If they enroll, I think the Riley Nelson rule states that schools cannot contact them while on a mission.

But I think that rule is not really used anymore as most kids go on their mission before enrolling (think a few years ago the mission age was lowered to 18).

Someone please correct me if my understanding is wrong.

Just an FYI, but Gentry has taken 2 OV's to ND and Virginia and should take OV's to BYU and Bama before deciding at the end of June. Idk if there are other schools involved as I'm not a subscriber to Rivals. I think he's BYU all the way, but he's visited twice and loved his OV so you never know.

If he's a BYU lean at the moment, we should have a shot. ND is much closer to BYU is environment than UVA or Bama. IIRC, we've had some success going after kids BYU wants.

FWIW I just texted a coach on BYU's staff and he said they feel really good about where they are at with Gentry. "Would be surprising if he didn't commit to us."

Guy isn't the Oline coach though, nor his main recruiter, so maybe a grain of salt needed.

BYU guys are always hard to deal with because they are always super hopeful, a little naïve and out of touch it seems. But, thought I would throw it on here.
