Watching now, man wish ND would play with the same attitude and passion that these Holtz teams played with back in the day. Waiting for FSU in the tunnel, these guys knew they were bad.

Wasn't alive for this game, was a fun watch. It's true that this team had an intensity and swagger that is always apparent in the elite teams. But it's still funny to see how the game has progressed. I don't think they could even compete with the ND teams of today.

Also, can we just agree moving forward that we are claiming the 93 title? The athletic dept can follow suit once we talk it into existence

Sigh...Then the following week Boston College ruined my childhood. Notre Dame should jail sex BC every time the two teams meet for what happened in 1993.

You have to wonder if Lou Holtz and ND had won the championship in 1993 how that would have changed ND’s fortune in the years and decades after...

Yup.

My two earliest memories:

- I think it was McDougal against Michigan on a really long run. Can't remember if he got caught inside the 5 or scored. At grandparents house with my late grandfather sitting on the floor. Don't remember anything else.

- The BC kick to win. At grandparents house with my late grandfather sitting on the floor. Remember the next 3 hours of being mad.

The first Notre Dame game I saw was the 1993 Cotton bowl after the 1992 regular season. ND was #5 in the AP and coaches poll. TAMU was #4 in AP and #3 in the coaches poll. Notre Dame went on to wax TAMU 28-3. The following season, 1993, is the first Notre Dame season I watched and when I fell in love with the university. I hate Boston College!

I was 8 in 1993 and watched the entire thing last night for the first time:

1) McDougal was a below average QB throwing to below average WRs

2) Burris should have had 3 more INTs

3) Jim Flanagan was a stud

4) We've come a long way with TV arts/graphics

5) Women weren't too attractive in the 90s. The hair...yikes.

First time ever watching the game as I was 3 months old when it aired...

some comments:

OJ Simpson on the pregame. LMFAO

As others have pointed out, our team was a bunch of badasses and they knew it. Whether that was the type of player Holtz recruited or if Holtz instilled it in them, idk, but I would love to see a BK team with that type of attitude.

Our secondary in particular was MEAN.

Any of our teams from the last 3 years would shut out the 1993 team lol. Funny how the game has evolved. Very few players from this game would be able to compete in 2020. Aaron Taylor, most our secondary, Derrick Brooks, Charlie Ward.

I was a senior in college when the game was played. We were watching it at a buddy’s duplex...it was jam packed. What I most remember is that I was the ONLY dude there rooting for ND. That’s when it hit me how ND was hated as much as they were loved.

Mind you I was a legit ND fan, there were no legit FSU fans there that I recall. It was a “Game of the Century” which made it an event so folks typically rooted for the sexy newcomer to knock off the historical giant.

I was in Arkansas so most of those folks were Hog fans. Back then, though; teams like Miami & FSU were still more national (SEC wasn’t a monster like it is today) and would be some fans’ #2 favorite team. Needless to say, it was a sweet victory. Alas, the next week was a gut punch. ND should’ve never been in that position in the first place so it’s not his fault, but the most haunting play for me is not the winning kick...it’s LB Pete Bercich dropping the interception on the game-winning drive.

I was in 6th grade and remember this game well because my g’pa was living with us back then. He and his 10 siblings are all from Thomasville, GA which is close to Tallahassee and where Charlie Ward went to HS. They are all big FSU fans and Ward was probably his favorite college football player ever.

We all know how it played out over the rest of that season and he and I would still talk about it (debate the true Champion) up until his health went bad. He’d always give me shit about that title. :)

Frickin' Boston College...ruined my first game in Notre Dame stadium that year, spoiled our perfect season, and cost us another National Championship. We would have beaten Nebraska easy that year.

Then you also remember the media at the time saying If FSU lost or won by less than 3 points I think... We would be the NC winner. FSU won by 2 I think and then the whole narrative turned into Bobby deserves 1... BULLCRAP!
It was Criminal to give the NC to a team that won by the skin of their teeth and lost to us.
Boston College was ranked when we lost to them. They were very good that year.

I'll never forget the day this game was played. I was 15 years old and I was in Columbus, OH to watch the end... listened to the first 3 quarters on the radio.. As someone stated earlier, It was very evident how hated our University was and that game and season alone flung FSU into an epic college. Without that game and us getting screwed at the end, FSU would still be another South Carolina Gamecock.

They weren't better than us though. BC relishes the spoiler role, much like Pittsburgh. I'm not saying a team should ever roll over for another one, but we made the mistake of overlooking them when we were clearly the better team.

We were better. They came In and got a few of our lucky bounces (for that time) and that kick will always be my nightmare...

Couple of things about BC. They had more than just playing the spoiler role that weekend. They were still pissed about the game the previous year when Holtz ran the score up on them (in their mind). Can’t remember the upcoming opponent but it was either a ranked team or a big rival (SC?) and Holtz wanted to plant a seed that they needed to look for ND to fake punt. When the game was well in hand for the Irish, Holtz called the fake punt & it worked. Holtz claims to this day that it was nothing against BC and all about showing his future opponent that look. Who knows?

Also, it was reported that during the buildup to the FSU game, the Grotto was overwhelmed by lit candles. Fast forward to BC week and only a handful were lit. Can’t remember if it was local or national media that reported that but thought it was an interesting considering God doesn’t care who wins a football game (I know...but his Mother does). It just framed the act of prayer as superstition...whether the press intended that or not.

Any of you remember what happened to Michael Miller? He was the 5’7” 155 lb speedster that returned punts & played WR for ND. He was a weapon in 1993 and believe he left school soon after. I want to say it was academic issues but never got confirmation. He must not have continued w/ football at any level b/c I can’t find much on him (no wiki page). He was Joey Getherall before Getherall

I will concede that ND got the benefit of the doubt in the polls in the 60s/70s but the tide had definitely turned once Lou had ND rolling in the late 80s/early 90s. Miami & FSU were the flavor of the moment for the media and they didn’t hesitate to let that bias show through on their final polls.

Case in point:

1989 Notre Dame loses head to head at Miami. Score didn’t show it to be a barn burner but it was far from a blowout in Miami’s favor. Holtz claimed responsibility of his team’s play b/c he bent over backwards to hold back their aggression b/c he knew the U were going to try to bait them and paint them as just as “thuggish” as they’d been portrayed.

Both ND & Miami finished w/ one loss yet ND got matched up w/ the #1 team in the nation in the Orange Bowl...Colorado. Notre Dame won. Miami won their bowl game. Guess who was crowned NC by both polls?

Fast forward to 1993...opposite scenario for ND. Irish beat FSU head-to-head. Both ND & FSU finish w/ one loss. FSU gets matched up w/ #1 Nebraska and wins on a last second FG. ND beats #4 ranked TAMU in the Cotton Bowl. Guess who was crowned NC by both polls?

So according to the media, head-to-head mattered when it adversely affected the Irish. Beating the #1 ranked team in the post season only mattered if it didn’t include the Irish.

I don't know how many of us on here are old enough to remember how big the lead up to this game was... and the actual game itself was bigger.
We Won and If social media existed back then by a half measure to today... we would have won the SHIP.
We really should claim the 93' Title! Why wouldn't we? We beat the team that everyone 'THINKS' won outright.
Still pisses me off.

We won in 2014 too. Illegal Screen/pick my butt. The only 2 Ships FSU has claimed Is because ignorance exists in the media... You can see the covid thread for more evidence..
