I can imagine being treated badly enough by staff to do that, but you wouldn't think it would happen nowadays and at Iowa.
When my brothers played, there were assistant coaches who would literally run players that they wanted to quit until they couldn't run anymore and someone would have to help them off the field to the locker room. This would take place after practice cleared the field. One assistant coach on one of my brothers' teams was known to have run a player who then died. That was, of course, covered. I mention this because it might interest readers, but also to say that human nature can be pretty nasty especially in high testosterone physical environments. Not saying anything remotely like this happened, but running off players has a long history in football.
