He's the son of Abram Elam who played at Kent St and was a part time starter in the NFL for 5-6 years.

Since 1987, three of (Abram) Elam's siblings were shot to death. His older brother, Donald Runner, was fatally shot in 1987. His sister Christina, was killed in 1999. On May 9, 2008, his older brother Donald Elam was fatally shot; at age 14, Donald was once the youngest person ever indicted for murder in Palm Beach County, though he was later acquitted.

On December 1, 2011, Abram's father died, and Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones let Abram use his private plane to go to Florida to be with his family. His younger brother, Matt Elam played in the NFL for the Baltimore Ravens.

Yes it would and reading between the lines of his tweet, I would say those unfortunate incidents have left enough of an impression with him that he sees ND as a way to put him in a position where he doesn't have to worry about being involved in those type of incidents.

Someone needs to refresh my memory. It seems Elam was present but did not participate in the alleged rape and was convicted of sexual battery. Yet the other three charged with rape were not convicted. If I recall former Giants RB Tucker Frederickson became a mentor for him at got him hooked up at Kent State. I know when he got to the pros Bill Parcells loved the guy both as a player and a person.
