Been a good week so far for my Tide. Lee and C. Williams are solid pickups. And I think we get another commit, maybe two, coming out of the weekend. It appears the new coaches are proving their reps on the trail.

Did you really expect less? What Saban wants, Saban gets. People need to just accept athletes go to school to play ball, not get a good education.

This is a great example of why many posters out here seem to have issues with some of your posts. You know nothing about Shane Lee or Christian Williams. Furthermore, you really don't know much about Alabama when it comes to educating their student athletes. You have a right to your opinions... but if you don't bring substance to your posts, you will either be called out or dismissed through posters ignoring you.

it would be nice if Bama would let the rest of college football play in the sand box, you big bullies.

Look at Stanford's offer list on 247 and Wingman Ray's "substance" is right there. Dax Hollifield choosing Virginia Tech over Stanford, Payton Wilson going to NC State over Stanford, Max Wright choosing Texas A&M, Nicholas Petit-Frere choosing the Buckeyes over Stanford and Notre Dame. I could keep going back with every class, but its pretty obvious that most 17-18 year old kids want to go play football. When I was recruited in high school I wanted to go to the schools with the most hot girls, it was pretty simple, then my mom said you're going to one of these three schools cause they are good academically. I wouldn't say ALL high school kids look for football first, but I'd wager more than 50% care about football/coaching staff/extracurriculars over academics.

And yet Stanford is apparently famous for steering their football players into bogus coursework. I agree that there are many recruits who believe college is an ends to a mean. It's their way of getting to the NFL and they could care less about getting an education to prepare them beyond the league. But I would also argue that if a player wants to apply themselves they can get a pretty solid education at most any school.

As far as Wingman's comments, he knows nothing about either player mentioned, much less the thousands of players that will go to college as student athletes. If he wants to post broad generalizations then he should expect to be challenged for supporting evidence. What one thinks is their thoughts... throwing out comments without any evidence is more like talking out of one's as*.

Man give me break! Bama sucks as a college for anything other than law school. I live in Birmingham and I see it firsthand just how good that Bama non law degree is. Bama has and never will be considered a school of exceptional education, despite what has been pushed since Bama has been winning. Go back to pre Saban days and Bama was the waaaay behind Auburn in the rankings and Auburn wasnt exactly blowing the doors off national ranking even then.

Bama is a football school period. You can push all you want because it is your favorite school but in the end, no way compares to the national schools academic wise. You can quote this article or that but at the end, how does a school go from being lower bottom to upper tier in less than 10 years just because they have a good coach that wins NCs?

Anyone going to Bama, especially someone from the other side of the country is going for no other reason than Saban selling the lie that everyone going to Bama to play is going to sign a NFL contract. Does Bama put a lot in the pros? Sure they do. But what part of that is because they sign top 1-3 classes every single year? And what about all those 4-5 stars that are working for the city at trash detail that didnt quite get Sabans "guaranteed" NFL contract?

There is so much more to a school's educational value than a ranking from USNWR or Forbes ranking.

I know a former Purdue athlete w/ a sociology degree making $200k for a major grocery chain and the only reason he was originally hired was because an alum got him in the door and mentored him along his career path.

My friend's daughter graduated from Bama last year with a finance degree, worked on Wall St for a year and is now heading to Wharton for her MBA.

I got the job that set me up professionally because the interviewer saw I went to Valpo and they were in the tourney that year. He was set to hire some other candidates but gave me an interview more to talk hoops, he played DII and was a hoops junkie. We hit it off, I got a position I didn't deserve at the time and we rolled out AutoTrader.com. Life changed because I went to a "basketball school".

Also, don't forget who these recruit are... 16-18 y/o's who often times come from nothing. Tell them they can go to Bama, take a serious shot at the NFL or CFL (and soon to be the AFL XFL) plus if they don't make it they can be a PE teacher/coach, a probation officer, a social worker or if they want... work at the bagman's car dealership making $80k selling Dodge Chargers and that's still winning the lottery.

First off, I wasn't comparing Bama to anyone. You were. My comment was that if one wanted a good education they could get it at most any major university. Bama has a good reputation public university wise for communications, IT, and their relatively young engineering program is pretty solid. As far as why elite athletes come to Bama. Winning titles and playing against the best competition around every day in practice I guess. And a good education if they apply themselves.

Anyways, my issue with your OP was the fact that you know nothing about either recruit but posted as if you did. If Shane Lee was good enough for ND to offer him then I would believe he is smart enough to be successful at pretty much any school. What he does educationally while in school is his decision. But, as I said earlier, he can receive a good education that will prepare him for life after football or he can do the bare minimum to get by. That choice is his.

I agree with you that Alabama is a fine school. Lots of smart kids find what they need to succeed there. Saban, as well as some very smart administrators, have done wonders for the school over the last 15 years. Its incredible to see the campus these days.

That said. There are a whole lump of schools that offer extremely similar educational and networking opportunities, but there are only a few elite schools that have football programs.

It's the EXACT same argument that someone would make in footall. Sure, you can go to any one of the dozens of middling Power 5 schools (NC State, Oregon State, Texas Tech, Missouri...) and go the NFL. Maybe distance, playing time, and other factors make it a goo fit for you. But none of them offer what Alabama or Ohio State offers. Those schools are the elite, if its about football.

So, while you can clearly get a good education and become successful going to one of the mass of similar state schools. But if you are serious about education, reputation, networking, etc., etc., certain schools stand out. Notre Dame is one of them.

But even beyond all that, it ultimately boils down to whether the coaching staff and the administration see you as there to play football, or there to get an education. Sure you can get a great education at Alabama. But Saban is probably not going to be happy to hear you are taking that hard class in a difficult major if he thinks you need extra time in the weight room. You don't become a football powerhouse recruiting excellent students and encouraging their studies.
