ND does not want word out about visitors because they don’t want to get into bidding wars I would guess

No-one is going to get into a "bidding war" with this kid. He's a depth piece.. He wasn't going to get much time with tOSU.

I’ll take a high P5 contributor over a G5 starter any day. Unless they have freaky physical attributes that were just missed out of HS. Scars of Cain Madden maybe but Vaughns lack of strength had me expecting the worst if that was the signee.

He was going to be 3rd man in a rotation on the edge, wasn't he? That's not a small job at the P5 level.

Unless he was reading the writing on the wall and figured Johnson has some frosh/sophomores ready to pass him up. But it seems like OSU fans initial reaction was "this sucks, he was one of our most productive guys."

He was at about 20 snaps a game, up until the very end of the season, probably decided he was entering the portal (can take that either way)

Their rotation was uncomplicated.

Harrison - JTT
JJB - Sawyer

4 DEs played, JJB and Sawyer played every game in notable reserve, but definitive PT.

Never said I wouldn't take him.

Swear to god ISD like three days ago had a post that was from an OSU source where they were like "yeah we missed on that evaluation" with regard to JJB and him being not great at football. Will we get revisionists history when he commits to ND? We'll see!

Vaughns was strictly a third down guy is the issue, I think.

I don't know anything about him. I've never watched a minute of film and have no idea if he's good. Hopefully he is! We need some developed players on our line next year, we are an injury or two away from catastrophe.

JJB is exactly what I mentioned yesterday in the Scott thread:

“prospects who might have a low floor but exceptionally high ceiling. This wold be a player with a high risk/high reward as a prospect….

all that is needed to really change this picture to the better is some of that 3 star group needs to be the boom/bust group instead like Gobaira and that would have given us a lot more to work from”

JJB has been a bust from his recruiting rankings standpoint but how many years later still possesses prototypical size giving him value. The staff clearly thinks that is more valuable than Justin A at this point who’s clearly maxed out contributing on the edge.

We don't need JJB to live up to his #127th best player in the country recruiting ranking from four years ago. We just need him to be a serviceable contributor on the two-deep, which he appears to have been this past season for one of the few teams in the country that is better than us.

This seems like a no-brainer?

By year:

2022: Backup to JTT and Zach Harrison
2021: Backup to Tyreke Smith (5th RD) and Zach Harrison
2020: Backup to Tyreke Smith and Jonathan Cooper (7th RD)
2019: Backup to Chase Young (1st RD) and Tyreke Smith/Zach Harrison

Played a ton of football, don’t really see any big injury gaps.

Basically expect someone who has late round/UDFA type ability IMO.

OSU has done so well at recruiting DE, developing them, and sending them to the NFL as top draft picks, that any player that doesn’t reach that point is a disappointment. Maybe it’s a bit true considering how JJB was ranked by the recruiting services, but a player can still be good and not project highly to the NFL. He never developed into a star player, but he was part of the rotation at DE and held that spot for last two seasons.

Sometimes a player just needs a better opportunity.

Here's the mostly full comments from OSU 247 thread when he entered portal on 1/2 for context on how they truly feel. I'm sure if he transfers to ND they'll all shift more negative so this may be the best true barometer. Take it fwiw.

1a. I figured he would stay one more year? This is surprising to me.
1b. Why should he stay one more year just to be a part timer, when he can go somewhere else & be a full-time starter ?
1c. He’s getting recruited over. I think is good for the team and him, all the best to him he was nothing but a buckeye.

2. I thought I saw him in on a few tackles during the Georgia game. Was actually wondering if that was his last game.

3a. Best of luck to him. No loss for us. Wish him all the best though!!
3b. Best for all involved.

4a. And the exodus begins.
4b. He wasn’t going to see time next year.
4c. If you have been paying attention it’s happening everywhere

5. Good decision. I thought he did a good job. Hopefully, he can get more playing time elsewhere and maybe get drafted. Best of luck to him.

6. Good luck to this young man on his next journey!. Always a Buckeye

7a. I could see him going to Nebraska to play for Rhule. The staff Rhule has now has a lot of ties to the New Jersey area, and the Huskers were JJB’s other finalist initially. No doubt in my mind that he would start there especially with Garrett Nelson not returning.
7b. This, or back home for Rutgers….
7c. I could see Wisconsin…Fick is about that portal

8. Thank you Jesus . Too many underperforming upperclassmen who don’t contribute anything playing over talented younger guys . The other Question is why did LJ give him so many snaps which could have gone to Caden Curry and Sawyer ?
Now please can LJ .

9. In less playing time, he was more productive than Sawyer and JTT. Not a lot of experienced talent at the DE position returning. Need some young guys to step up or getting to the QB will continue to be inconsistent.

10. Normally, I would say this is good for all involved, but it’s a reminder to me that we didn’t get one of the 3 DEs. I believe we are now 2 down depth wise at DE. Regardless, it is what it is. Good luck to the young man.

11. Best of luck to him and thanks for being a Buckeye contributor!

12. Best of luck to him. Seemed like a good kid and hope he does well wherever he ends up.

13. Hallelujah Amen!!

14a. Javontae Jean-Baptiste was a unsung pass-rusher..At times it appeared Jean-Baptiste was Ohio State most effective pass-rusher..
14b. Development issue or individual ?
Personally I think it’s the coach .
All these guys not being developed
Cooper , Tyreke Smith , Zach Harrison , JB , Haskell Garrett , Taron Vincent
