Maybe I missed something, but I was under the impression he'd be playing safety at the next level and not corner?

Gus Ramos flipped his CB and the Minnesota guy followed added one for Iowa.

Deleted tweet = Great visit at Iowa

Wouldn't surprise me if they told him they won't be offering and that's why he pulled the trigger.

May very well be. If they do offer, it will be interesting to see if it changes anything with the player in question. Kids that verbal to Northwestern generally don't decommit. We've seen ND try to flip NU verbals in the past couple of years and they haven't had success. Other schools have gone to the well also.

His best offer to date is probably Arkansas or Va Tech. As a kid from the suburbs of Chicago, he doesn't have offers from Wisconsin or Michigan State, let alone tOSU, scUM and PSU. He could still earn those offers in the weeks and months ahead, but I think the offer list can always help tell a good part of the story.

He's otherwise gone to these camps and tournaments and performed well in those settings. Plays for a good program and performs at a high level. If ND passes, it may have nothing to do with his football ability or his grades.

in elko we trust right. If its January 31st and were throwing offers out to low 3:s: kids who had "good senior years" from half way across the country, that trust goes out the window.

I'm there with you. I'll trust Elko until he gives me reason not to trust. So far, he seems like the hardest working defensive coordinator we've seen. Bobby D had a single great year of recruiting. Let's see how Elko fares with a full year in the program and some success on the field.

You have a point but if he can score a JOK and JGH at the 11th hour of every cycle that would be more than fine by me. It's just hard on the nerves.

Elko and Lea have arrived in terms of career trajectory. Elko is about to turn 40 and he's never had a job this big in terms of name recognition, financial resources, etc. Lea is in his mid thirties and can only say the same. You grind to get to this point and now you've got some horse power behind you. You can't walk into the same living rooms as ND as the ones you can at Bowling Green and Wake Forest. That alone should motivate you on top of your own self motivation to get after it.

I'm not going to credit them with wins on these two until we see how they play. BVG was applauding for bringing in second DT's late in his first cycle, few have panned out if any.

No one on the planet was thrilled with Tiassum's film.

Everyone on the planet is thrilled with JOK and JGH's film.

I use R&R's as much as anyone to identify talent. These two show why R&R's aren't the be all, end all.

Don't read as I am writing those two off already. I just dont want to go congratulating them on two late adds when they havent even practiced yet.

I am still curious as to why Greg doesnt fit our needs, but as I said I am trusting in new staff until proven otherwise.

Yet if they had signed no one, the Internet bitching would have been multi-fold.

They were finishing up a class on the fly with little time to spare. There has to be some slack given there.

They're not Brian Van Gorder and so far they have been doing a very good job.

just to play devil's advocate. If we had not signed the trio of DT's late in BVG's first cycle the internet bitching would have been multi-fold. He was finishing up a class on the fly with little time to spare. Slack was given. Now we know he was trash and we have gaping depth concens at DT because we were in a position of grabbing fliers late.

I agree they have been doing a good job, but there have been some early head scratchers too that everyone, including myself, are giving them the benefit of the doubt for because of the good early success.

But my point remains. If we are turning down players like Newsome, Waggoner, O'Rouke, Vann, then I expect those positions to be filled with equal or better talent. Not the Mokwuah's come late January or my trust goes right out the window.

Have to give Van Gorder a pass with the first few months on the job, too. After that, he was a lazy recruiter. Wasn't proactive and wasn't anywhere near close to being a part of the 21st Century when it comes to what the top programs do daily with recruiting (Ohio State, Clemson, etc.). Notre Dame has plenty of resources to allow the football staff to recruit their asses off. The academic admissions process is what it is, but that doesn't give anyone the excuse to not put forth the effort.

The last two DC gave us a body of work that was pretty poor overall. Mike Elko is doing things the right way. Whether that yields the maximum results that everyone wants, we'll find out. When my job is on the line, I'm going to go for the players I want to eventually piece into my two deep. If they don't fit for any reason, on the field or off, move on. Notre Dame's margin for error isn't Alabama's or Ohio State's in that regard. They should still utilize social media, mailings, visits, etc. like those guys do. That's about where the similarities end, though. The pool is smaller.

Do I expect Elko to have recruiting cycles in the future that resemble the one that ended a few months ago right after he took the job? No, but should that be the case, I think we all know how that story is likely to end.

Just wanted to add:

He measured in for the Opening at 6-0, 165, not 6-1, 175.

Did not participate in testing. Won the DB MVP (Kalon got invited and tested very well) but was not invited to Oregon. All the invitees tested.

Enrolled at IMG. So what happens when he balls out and is IMG's best DB over Bookie and Griffith and.... whoever else they picked up this season?

I wonder if the door was left cracked open?

Newsome looked good tonight. It's gonna be interesting to see how his career compares to Brown, Boykin & Bracy's.

Seemed like a great fit and him playing CB along w/ Bookie at IMG last season while Griffith played safety seemed like a solid affirmation that he was gonna be a player.

Wisconsin had more turnovers in that game than the state of Iowa had positive Covid tests.
