2017 CA ATH Talks ND Offer - Irish Sports Daily

Sealing up its 2015 recruiting class – whether it be chasing uncommitted prospects or hanging on to the prospects already in the fold – is definitely priority one as the Notre Dame coaches cover in the country now that the regular season is over. Hitting up junior prospects is priority number two.
But the Irish aren’t going to look the other way when they come across even younger prospects on the road though either. That’s exactly what happened when the Irish stopped at Newbury Park High School in Newbury Park, Calif., earlier this month and saw 2017 athlete Darnay Holmes.
Notre Dame had been watching Holmes for a while and decided not to waste any more time before extending an offer to the 5-foot-11, 185-pound sophomore.
“It’s a big offer in my opinion,” said Holmes, who also has early offers from schools like USC, UCLA, Ohio State, Clemson, Mississippi State, Tennessee and Washington among others.
“It is definitely a big offer because Notre Dame has been known traditionally for having great academics and plus they’ll always be in the hunt for the BCS.”
Holmes is serious about learning more about the Irish program.
“The next step is definitely going to be a visit up there to South Bend, Indiana,” he said. “That’s for a fact. I haven’t planned exactly when I’m going to go, but hopefully I can get up there in the spring or summer.
“I want to see the way the coaches interact with the players, get to know all of the coaching staff and tour around the school and see how the environment is.”
Holmes took an unofficial visit to Clemson back in April and returned for another last month.
“It was a great trip,” he said. “The crowd was really into it, which I loved. I really couldn’t do much because I had to get back on the plane because I had a huge project. It was just a trip to see the coaches again, talk for a few seconds and get back on the flight.”
He doesn’t have any other visits planned at this point.
Holmes played cornerback and wide receiver this year, so he’s listed as an athlete, but he has a clear preference, “definitely defensive back.”
He feels his intensity is one of his greatest strengths.
“As a young guy, a lot of opponents look down upon me like, ‘He’s just a sophomore. He’s overrated,’” he said. “I take that on the field every time I go against somebody whatever grade he’s in to show him that I am that guy that everybody talks about and I’m here to take away your confidence.”
When choosing a college, he’ll be looking for a program where he’ll have a similar chance to be an impact player early.
“Will I have a chance to start as a true freshman is definitely going to be a big one. Also, does it feel like home when I go visit and do I get along with the coaches well. Plus, will they get me ready to go to the next level? And also, how good are the academics and will they always be in the championship hunt?”

"Notre Dame, Duke, Stanford," he said when asked what programs are standing out. "I'm looking at all those schools with good degrees and graduation rates, because I'm one of those guys that's not just football oriented. I want to help out my family in the future without football. I just want to be able to give them money when I own a business or work for one, and I can help them invest and stuff like that. I'm just that type of guy that's a family person and that's what I want in a school."

Wants to visit before summer is over like every west coast kid says but he legit seems interest and loved his quote up there

Can not lose this kid to Stanford. If USC and the other usual suspects are not in the picture, this kid needs to be Irish.

Scout: was supposed to announce June 23. That may change now. He and his father have said they want to visit ND in June.

In the last day or so we've received positive updates from Okudah, Carter, Graham, Adebo and now Holmes. Did we switch up our recruiting pitch to defensive backs? Whatever we're doing keep doing it (and start using it on D-linemen please)!

Holmes has always been thought to be a Stanford lean. That's good because he might not get in. (insert DRob joke here).

Nebraska has been the other school recruiting him hard. Two of his teammates, Keyshawn Jr and Tristan Gebbia are committed there and Nebraska is working LA with their "Calibraska" campaign... and it's getting good traction. They had @ 10 solid recruits at their Spring Game.

If I was CBK, I'd make Denbrock basically relocate out here and have him HAMMER on Holmes and Graham. The Graham hype is real, the talking heads out here can feel it. If ND could land them both they'd have a 2-3 year starting tandem that would seriously move the D to another tier. SC is weak right now, strike while the iron is hot.

You have a spare bedroom Denbrock could use to help keep the expenses down?

Really impressed by the tape, seems to have good hips and breaks on the ball really well. Reminds me of the Fullers of VT.

I'll give you 10 billion reasons why they should just put him up in the penthouse at the Ritz. But if Coach likes craft beer and four legged bed hogs, I've got a room or three he can chose from. I'll even let him borrow my donk so he can pull up legit!

Dem gold hoops tho!

he does not like recruiting. simple as.

I know that view has been stated on here before, but it just seems silly to me every time I see it. Recruiting is such a big part of the job in coaching college football. To me, it s like a firefighter saying that he likes to fight fires, but he doesn't want to ride in the fire truck with the other firefighters to get to the fire. It sets a bad example for his subordinate coaches, and as the leader of the defense that has struggled at times, maybe it's time to be open to trying this recruiting thing out and try a different angle. Heck, he might be able to find the brain surgeon MLBs he needs to direct it on the field ;)

Mods please feel free to move to BVG thread if need be.
