Was committed to WSU had a Boise offer so assuming Sanford knew him. Guessing it's not a preferred walk on

Was a Washington State commit in April, so this is a flip. Was recruited by Sanford at Boise State.

EDIT: I like the ASU and Washington State offers. Nothing particularly jaw dropping in his tape.

A quarterback Mike Leach likes and who won't scare away Hunter Johnson or any other elite 2017 recruits? Sounds good to me.

Who? Haven't read much of anything on this kid. I trust the coaching staff, but this is/was "out of nowhere"! Not sure why we would not slow play this kid a little. Why the rush to take his commitment? Again, I trust in the staff, just a little shocked at this news. Go Irish!!!

He was recruited by Sanford at Boise State. Sanford visited him during the spring evaluation period, and got him to make a visit a couple weeks ago. Apparently he's the guy we zeroed in on recently.

I, personally, had never even heard of him until right now.

Got to like the Boise offer. I think Sanford's track record speaks for itself, but Harsin wanting him is pretty big as well.

Project guy with good potential. I don't expect him to start for us unless it's a dire emergency. We needed a QB that wouldn't scare away Hunter.

Can we get the Johannes posted personal data as well as the video, photo, and tweets from the closed thread moved over here. Also the LAX posted Tweet that broke this.

Johannes stuff should be incorporated into O.P. simply merging will screw up a Recruiting thread format.

Conspiracy Theory: we accepted the commitment of a lower rates pocket passer with some mobility now before Hunter Johnson decides in order to show him the future of the offense and how it isn't just for dual threat guys like Winbush and Zaire. The commitment comes almost a week before what could be Johnson's last visit to ND before his decision. Kelly and the staff figure that with Johnson and Winbush 2 years apart the QB inbetween them (Book) doesn't need to be a 5 star so they took Book instead of waiting on a possible bigger fish later in the cycle.

Not a bad idea from the staff. I see Oak as your basic college spread QB that has accuracy, a decent arm, and some mobility. Should be able to run our offense if it comes to that.

Just because no one here knew about it doesn't mean it was a rushed commitment. As Lax alluded to above, this has obviously been in the works for a little while at the very least. I don't think there was anything rushed about this. I look forward to seeing what Ian can do his senior year!

Project? Potential? How exactly?

Deshone Kizer is an example of a guy with "potential"... Book is a guy who seems downgraded for his stature. He's like the polar opposite of a Jacob Eason or Hackenberg in terms of projecting upside.

I don't see a project at all. I see a guy without sexy tape or elite physical traits, but probably very little risk of "failure."

So Rees?

100%. This is more Tommy Rees than Dayne Crist. Which is honestly probably exactly what we need in this situation. Ian looks like a 'gamer', as cliche as that sounds.

This is much better off-season drama. More of this genre please.

Book is the perfect guy to take between two "big-name" QBs.

He is more than able to beat those guys out, but also will compete his butt off if he doesnt. If someone goes down, he will be able to play within the entire offense.

Book isn't as athletic as Zaire, Kizer, Wimbush or even Hunter Johnson for that matter, but he is able to move.

He does remind me of Rees, where he can manage a game, but he also has better arm strength and mobility.

Nice pickup for Notre Dame in a year where QB wasn't a huge need.

They have slightly different styles, but skill-wise he looks a lot like Maty Mauk IMO. Doesn't have the funky delivery and probably not as strong of an arm, but they look pretty comparable overall as recruits.
