Whew. Tournament play.

Yesterday ND looked crisp, shot well, low turnovers. Today shot poorly overall, 22-57, 38.6%, outside the arc, 4-15, 26.7%, and from the line, 7-13, 53.8%, and sloppily 16 turnovers.

ND was up by 11 in the first half but lost the second half by 6. Loyd had 21 with 14 coming in the second half. She scored almost half of ND's second half 29 pts. Turner had 11 Rebs and 3 Orebs including one big one near the end of the game. The much maligned Mabrey was 3-9 from the arc for 9 pts in a 6 pt win. After 5 double figure scorers yesterday, only Loyd was in double figures today.

ND's going to have to pick up the slack tomorrow against either UL or FSU.

Well, not very pretty, but we beat the thugs. This is difficult for this team as Reimer will foul and Westbeld is not ready for this level of aggression and strength. We need a fourth big to give a bit of violence when we face thugs.

Jewell Loyd balled out down the stretch and was the only real reason we didn't collapse. Muffet played a box-and-one the majority of the game, afraid of Greenwell {Greenwood?}, their bomber. This had to be almost a mathematical gameplan calculation. I've seen staffs reason that if player-A doesn't get very many points, "they" can't beat us, and lopside the defense to accomplish that. Cable and Loyd took the bomber away, but, in my opinion, that has a hidden deficit, as it takes Madison away from her help defense, charge-taking, and passing-lane poaching.

Theorizing, Muffet must not have believed that Duke [without the bomber] would relentlessly ram the ball down low to the thugs... but in the second half they did, and almost got all the way back. Our open-centered box, plus Reimer out and Westbeld not strong enough, created some real angst. But Coach was right; Duke cannot shoot well, and maybe her "math" won an ugly game afterall.

Next game might be similar.

ND 3-0 All-Time Against FSU

ND 3-0 All-Time Against FSU

The Last Time Notre Dame and Florida State Met
Lindsay Allen scored 18 points, added a career-high eight assists, and made all the tough plays down the stretch to help No. 4 Notre Dame beat Florida State, 74-68 on Jan. 2, 2015, in the ACC opener for both teams at Purcell Pavilion.

Allen's buzzer-beating half-court heave got the Fighting Irish within one point after a tough first half. Her pull-up jumper with 1:10 to play put the hosts up by seven and she added three free throws down the stretch, while guiding the offense as the primary ball-handler against an aggressive FSU defense.

Jewell Loyd led all players with 20 points, while Brianna Turner scored 12 of her 14 points in the second half, to go with a (then) career high-tying five blocked shots, to help Notre Dame win its conference opener.

Shakayla Thomas scored 18 points to lead Florida State, which had its nine-game winning streak snapped.

Down nine in the second half, the Fighting Irish went on an 11-0 run and took their first lead of the game on Madison Cable's steal and layup with 12:46 left.

Leticia Romero scored 15 points and Morgan Jones finished with 14 for Florida State.
