Not very encouraging in regards to our safety recruiting...
This.
Not very encouraging in regards to our safety recruiting...
So many negative views over a kid who is ranked higher than some of the safeties we are still pursuing, is a top 25 safety on the two biggest recruiting services, and who no one here really knows anything about.

Yikes.
Four star, rivals #235 overall, offers from Ole Miss and Miss State, and people are bitching?

Idc what his ranks are. Get me in the open field with him and he's in trouble.

I am admittedly naive in recruiting rules. If the no contact "dead" period commenced on Monday, how did this offer come about? And the Mckinney OV to UCLA?
In fairness, there's two months left until signing day and offers like this this late in the game could be deemed questionable or a sign of other recruits heading elsewhere~~~reaching.
I only base my opinion off watching his film. McKinney was ranked pretty low everywhere when we offered, but I really liked him on film. Ditto for some other guys, like Gary Jennings.
Not a huge fan of Mykelti's film. We do need safeties, but he would be the lowest on the board of all the guys we have offered for me.
I'm seeing a lot of schools offering kids like this. Hybrid safety linebacker because of the spread. I wonder if they see this kid as a possible tranquill type.
I really liked Prentice's film too. (Except the bits and pieces of what I saw from what I think is his most recent film is disappointing. He looks shaky in run support.) I think Mykelti looks like he is very good at run support.
Jennings looks like a great athlete, but I think you can say Mykelti is up there too. It tells you a lot when a large, quality team like Warren Central uses Mykelti on offense in particular situations. It usually means he's the best athlete on the team.
I have not been down on any particular safety offer we have made yet. (I was not fond of Buncom IV playing corner, but when we started recruiting him as a safety, my tune changed some.) Honestly think we are just in a tough position. We need safety help pretty badly.
4 star top 250 player on Rivals. Smart kid which is valued at the safety position. I know Louisville really wanted him and they have a recent track record with quality safeties like Calvin Pryor and Gerod Holliman.
Haven't watched his film yet, but even if McKinney was 100% we'd still need 2 DBs unless people think guys on the current roster are switching to safety.
On next year's roster, you're currently staring at only Redfield and Shumate. There is literally no one else who is a true safety and healthy.
Baratti is likely done, Hardy by all accounts doesn't have the option to return, and Tranquill is going to be recovering from his torn ACL at least through spring and who knows when he'll truly be ready to contribute at 100% in the fall. So you have two guys.
You can move Farley back into that role. That gives you 3. You can also potentially move Devin Butler back there but that'd give you a hole at CB, which will give you 4. Outside of those guys, you have to find a WR... Prosise isn't moving again, none of the '13 recruits fit the bill, and the only '14 recruit that does is Brent but I'm doubtful that will happen.
You need at least 6 scholarship safeties on the roster. So do the math... there are some fuzzy numbers with Farley and Tranquill but bottom line is that considering Fertitta is likely more suited for Farley's role this year than being a full time safety and McKinney is wishy-washy you need two guys right now that can play DB.
