We are going to miss Coney.. The kid is a GREAT college player and I think whichever team gets him in the pros is going to get a steal

I feel like you didn't really hear his name much this year because announcers would always mention Tranquill or Gilman or one of the d-linemen who were also in on the tackles.

ND Man in my opinion. Slept on this season for sure. Completely dedicated to our university and tremendous/consistent growth. Blue collar work ethic and a rock on the field. Gonna miss this guy, but look forward to seeing his continued success.

God I love this comment. This dude played his ass off for this school and never gave up. One of the reasons this defense was respected.

I remember watching Coney commit to ND. I am glad that he stayed for his senior year, I think it helped his stock, I see him going 1st or 2nd round.

Manti and Jaylon were beasts at ND. Coney had nice numbers the past 2 years (116 tackles last year and 123 tackles this year). The most Jaylon had was 115.

Manti started a nice trend with linebackers at ND, Coney continued the trend, and it will be exciting to see who takes over Coney's spot.

I enjoyed watching Coney at ND!

This is the biggest question mark for next year, by far. Hard to understate how unproven the MIKE position is with him gone and they are replacing elite production on the field.

Overview
Coney is an average athlete with average size but shows an impressive resilience to stay alive and make tackles, even when he looks like he might be blocked. He's consistent as a square-up, wrap-up tackler, but teams might want to see him play with more juice as a disruptor willing to take a few more downhill chances. If he runs well and adds some beef, Coney could project as an average starter at a two-down, inside linebacker spot.

Strengths
Athletic frame has room for additional muscle and overall mass
Shows feel for ball carrier's intentions as interior runner
Active hands and long arms allow him to stack and separate from linebackers
Can play over top of climbing blockers with hand useage or under them with some edge strength
Works quickly to his run fits and keeps pads square to the line when scraping
Good transition quickness from taking on blocker to becoming tackler
Maintains vision on ball carrier despite the traffic between them
Comes to balance as downhill tackler and operates with plus form
Sees what he hits and uses his length for optimal tackle finishing
Scouts question his long speed, but he appears to have adequate short-area burst for his position

Weaknesses
Average change-of-direction quickness on the move
Willing to gear the motor down at times when play is flowing away from him
Comes in hot and gets too easily sidestepped by his targets on receiver screens to perimeter
Occasionally loses gap leverage when trying to elude blockers
Allows linemen to climb up to him rather than working downhill to control where battle is fought
Instincts and response time to misdirection and counters is very average
Faces limitations in man coverage
Struggled in that area in 2017

Means he is not happy with the 40 times he has been putting up during practice.

or had too much to eat at St Elmo's last night :)

idk. why say you started prepping late. that just sends a negative message regardless of it's true or not.

The worst part is ND scheduled their pro day on the same day as Georgia, Ohio State and USC. Can’t imagine there will be that many high level decision makers (HCs and GMs) that choose to come to ND over Ohio State or Georgia.

Isn't the Ohio State one at a different time though? That could make it more enticing for them to do a double dip of ND and then OSU in the same day.

Maybe they will come to check out the buzz around Boykin.

I don't think this won't hurt anyone's chances. It's pretty common for HC's and GM's not to attend pro days unless they have a top ten pick and want to see their 2 or 3 possible options live. Ballard was at ND last year to see Nelson. According to the Indystar, Ballard saw five minutes of Nelson and left. His comment was something like, "That's all I need to see to know he's the real deal".

Coney only had 18 reps on the bench at the pro day
Tranquill had 31 at the combine. I thought he would have matched him.

Is his off the field issues early on hurting his stock?

I don’t think so. The marijuana issue, that was three years ago.

Coney graduated from Notre Dame early, and even recently spent time talking with youth at a detention center. His character is pretty clean.

He doesn’t have the athleticism or measurements than NFL teams normally desire, but you think with his body of work and his play on the field he would have been drafted by now.

Hope the Colts give him ring along with Barrs. Coney would be good competing with Walker.
