It seems like we aren't going after that many 6'4"+ OLBs this year

You're right, much more low profile speed guys. Staff is looking for speed on the edge this year. Ishaq and Niklas are the giants. Now they need more Shembo/Councell's

Yeah, and that surprises me a bit. I can remember Kelly talking about how great Shembo is but how he'd like to have "longer" players at OLB. Shembo is 6'2''.

Btw I hate when coaches and writers say "long" when they mean "tall". Where does that even come from?

I don't know how much basketball you watch but take someone like Kendrick Perkins as an example. He is long, but not tall. His length helps him play his position even though he is at a height disadvantage. They most likely don't mean "tall". If you can get a 6'2" guy with great speed and length you would take if over a "tall" player.

I agree. Referring to a player as long is just creepy.

lol this is just what I am talking about. It's unclear from the above what you mean by "long", as it usually is when the term is used by writers and coaches to refer to an athlete, which is why it annoys me. By "long" do you mean long-limbed and rangy? If so, I wish people would just say that. As a general matter, like in a non-sports context, we don't normally think of a person as "long"; it's a weird bit of sports jargon that I find vague and annoying. Not attacking you at all, btw, NDdomer2; I know you didn't invent the expression. This is just a pet peeve of mine.

And lol, yes, this too.

Emcee77. My best guess is yes, they are talking about being long-limbed and rangy. At least what I think of when a coach calls a player long it is along the lines of, "He can play bigger than he is." In basketball you can have a "long" 6'5" guy guard a 6'8/9" guy. I know we are talking about football players but basketball is a good reference for the long/tall debacle.

Yeah- we'd all be better off by saying, "this kid is long-limbed and rangy." "Long" is vague and annoying, but "rangy" is not??

Rusell Westbrook is a good example of somebody who is "long." He's ~6'3", but he has long arms, a high vertical, and is explosive; thus, he is able to rebound, get his shot off easily, and do other things many 6'3" guys in the NBA can't do. His "length" helps enable him to do this. If ND recruits an OLB that is 6'2" or 6'3", but long, then it diminishes the fact that he's not 6'5" or more. There also tend to be more human beings on the planet who are 6'2" or 6'3" than 6'5" or 6'6". So broadening the scope to include some of those shorter, but longer, players helps insure that the coaches still get somebody capable of performing the way they'd like.

I hate to say it, but despite your dislike of the term "long," it's kind of anatomical fact that some human beings fit this mold.

Oh, I get the concept, I just don't like using the word "long" for it. Just doesn't seem like the right word. A rope might be long, or a lecture, but not a person. A more precise term would be better. I have an editing background and I'm kind of a freak about words though; I'll concede that this may be a weird pet peeve.

I don't think we have a puncher's chance with this kid.

Get him on campus and crazier things have happened. Hell, the WR coach at Houston admitted he didn't think Houston had a shot with Detontay, lol.
