I just saw Clelland's video on Rivals and he was abosolutely dominating the D-lineman. I know Maryland is not a hotbed for blue chip recruits, but Clelland is a great addition to the line and a pure steal this early before he was recognized on a national scale. Either way, he made the right choice and he won't regret it. Welcome aboard!

Its the Rivals and Scouts way.

Look at Gray last year when he lost his 5 star ranking for some unknown reason, at least unknown to me anyway, shortly after he switched his committment to ND.

I put no bearing in rankings right now.

I don't understand the pre-occupation with Lane's weight (or lack thereof). If you look at the top 20 tackles according to Rivals (just as an example), the following individuals are in the same zip code as Lane (who is rated 14):

Tyron Smith #2 264lbs
Matt Khalil #3 280lbs
Tyler Love #7 285lbs
Matt Patchan #8 265lbs
Greg Shaw #12 267lbs
Bryce Givens #16 257lbs
Barrett Jones #17 271lbs
Luke Poehlmann #18 260lbs

So, with Lane there are 9 guys in the same ballpark; ie. almost half of the top 20 Tackles. I don't think the weight is a problem right now; but at some point in the future the staff may push him to put on some more weight, and if he has any designs to play on Sundays he would have to comply. Right now the guy has 2 things helping him be effective at a lower weight:

-wrestling background will help with leverage
-he 'freakin' squats a quarter ton......which is a bigger deal than the bench

To be honest, I would rather him be lean, muscular, and in shape and put weight on later than be a huge right now and having to turn fat into muscle later.

----------I agree and good research, reps...

Isn't his weight low so that he can make weight for wrestling? I'm sure that given the fact that he won't be wrestling in college, he will be able to pack on the pounds at the good ol' north dinning hall!

We frown upon the north dining hall in my neck of the woods. It's just not as Harry Potter like as South.

Yeah, I didn't eat at dining halls that often (though sometimes I would hold discussion sections in them), but I'm much more of a Southerner. The thing that always bugged me the most about NDH, actually, was the TV's - does South have them now?

I would think that he wrestled as a heavyweight, so I don't think the weight would matter.

Guys, I wouldn't worry all that much about the weight issue at this point, he's still in HS. I played TB in HS, and my biggest OT, was 6'7", and weighed 265. He got a full ride to Purdue, and by the time his redshirt freshmen year rolled in, he weighed in at 335, and let me tell you, there was absolutely no fat on his body. He had arms as big as my legs, which, I squatted 475# in my own right, not bragging, just wanted to give you a strength comparison, but he was gigantic. He ended up getting up to the 345-350# range, which he mantained throughout college. The thing is, Lane has the frame to put muscle on quick, and any strength and conditioning coordinator will know just how to do it.

Go Irish!

The last thing I'm worried about is an offensive lineman putting on weight.

This is from a week or so ago; it's a really nice article.

Mean streak

McDonogh offensive tackle Lane Clelland brings sensational skills and a steely disposition
Lane Clelland

By Pat O'Malley | Sun reporter
August 29, 2007

McDonogh coach Dom Damico said that senior tackle Lane Clelland "has the perfect body for a lineman: tall, long and strong." And "he has a mean streak," Damico added.

"I know what he means by mean streak," said Clelland, who is 6 feet 5 and 270 pounds. "When I'm pass-blocking and I feel someone off balance, I'm like a shark who smells blood. And when I do, I want to drive my man into the ground."

Opposing coaches, like Loyola's Brian Abbott, have noticed.

"Lane is the best offensive lineman we saw last year, " he said. "Lane is quick and has great feet, and he's got a little nasty to him."

Clelland's spirited play caught the attention of college recruiters, as well. The state's higest-rated lineman and No. 3 player overall by Rivals.com, Clelland had 20 scholarship offers and has committed to Notre Dame.

Damico knows Clelland well because the McDonogh star has been hanging around Eagles practices since he was 6. Clelland, the youngest of five children, grew up watching his older brother and mentor Lance play for McDonogh.

"Lance has really helped me a lot, taking me to camps, teaching me technique and always being there for me," Clelland said.

Lance Clelland was an All-Metro lineman at McDonogh in 1996. He went on to play at Northwestern and had been an assistant at McDonogh, coaching his brother until this season, when he was hired as an assistant at Dartmouth.

"The Clellands are the two best linemen we have had in my time at McDonogh, " said Damico, who is starting his 14th season. "But Lane may be a little notch above."

Rivals.com gives Lane Clelland a 5.9 rating and No. 16 position ranking nationally. The 5.9 falls under the top ranking of 6.1, which equates to an "elite prospect deemed to have pro potential."

Clelland, who runs the 40-yard dash in 4.9 seconds, has been on the McDonogh varsity team since his freshman year and a full-time starter the past three years.

"Lane will never see a day on defense at Notre Dame," Damico said. "He will be their left tackle one day. He has great technique and looks like a college player already."

Clelland's long-term goal is to play in the NFL.

"I first want to win [a Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association] A Conference football title outright, and then win a state wrestling championship," said Clelland, whose team was a tri-champion in football last year with Gilman and Loyola, and he was an A Conference heavyweight runner-up on the mat. "Obviously I want to start at Notre Dame and win a national championship and get a chance to play in the NFL."

No doubt playing at South Bend, Ind., enhances the chances to turn pro, but choosing a college wasn't easy. After visiting Notre Dame, Clelland said he didn't want to rush into a decision, but after frequent phone conversations with Irish offensive line coach John Latina, he made up his mind.

"My two brothers, Lance and Lou, drove me to visit Michigan last spring, and we left there for Notre Dame," Clelland said. "The two schools are total opposites. But I was really impressed with the Notre Dame coaching staff of coach Charlie Weis. You can tell Coach Weis doesn't take any [nonsense] and I appreciate that. My mom has been a strong influence on discipline. She is a strong woman and keeps us all in line. I like that.

"I was convinced that Notre Dame would be a good fit for me and I felt the education would be a little better than most places, " added Clelland, who has a 2.6 grade-point-average. "I have to work hard in school and am willing to do that. I will pursue business and maybe a double-major with English. "

Clelland considers himself a "very dedicated" person to the important things in his life, such as church, family, education and sports.

"We have a big family that lives in Reisterstown and we like to spend a lot of time together, " he said.

As for that mean streak, the well-mannered Clelland reserves that strictly for the football field.

Lane has been geting a few calls from other schools as well, but from what he said about it, it seems as though it's more of a nuisance rather than an option and he is looking forward to making an early impact on the Irish in the future.

On a side note Mike Farrell projected Lane to play on the interior of the OL, and possibly even center, and called Cave a true Guard as well. He then said ND would probably like to get a PT prospect but he couldn't think of anyone they (ND) had a shot with, then he thought about it and said maybe Page.

Hello you retard! Lane is a OT prospect, Cave and Golic could both play either OG or C, and ND still has a decent shot at Trevor Robinson. Then if Page did come to ND he wouldn't be a OT prospect anyway, he'd likely be projected at OG.

Via BGI:

Lane Clelland (OL): Clelland is an excellent offensive line prospect. His team stands at 1-2 after the weekend. Clelland is excited about his future with the Irish and is hoping to get into the rotation immediately as a freshman.

That is awesome the # of recruits that are going for this game. Plus he hasn't been to a game this year also and I believe he either hasn't met anyone in the class or isn't as well acquanted as the other players.

Clelland's weight issue should be put to rest.

According to him he is up to 6'6" and 280 pounds.

Added another inch to a frame that will easily get 20 more pounds added during his first year.

I have always been a firm believer that lineman with "wrestling" experience have a big advantage over those lineman without that experience. They seem to work better in the restrictive space that is the line of scrimmage(better footwork, more technically sound and a little meaner).

and hopefully his wrestling background serves him well, i cant wait for him to grow into a giant Left Tackle, however i guess we still will have to wait to see what role he will actually grow into. Im hoping he can back up Romine while Dever takes Right Tackle
