Yep.

In fact, John had to convince Weis to let eifert to nd and work out for his scholarship.

Just curious how you know this. If I remember correctly Eifert was offered shortly after attending a summer camp. Do you need an invite to attend camp or is camp open to anyone willing to pay a fee?

Not real surprising considering his best offers excluding ND were from Purdue and Cinicinnati. Kudo's to Weis for giving him a chance and seeing the possibilities of what Eifert could do.

I remember reading an article from a couple months ago (I don't have the link) and the writers made it sound as if John helped to at least "highlight" Tyler so Weis would gain more interest.

Maybe Tyler was planning on coming regardless, but from what I've heard, John helped Tyler out.

I found part of an article
Perseverance paying off | The Journal Gazette

It’s also amazing that Eifert ended up at Notre Dame. The Irish already had five scholarships committed to tight ends before former coach Charlie Weis and his staff agreed to give the 6-6, 251-pound Eifert a tryout on the recommendations of Svarczkopf (Bishop Dwenger Coach) and Andy Goodman.

Eifert tried out in between sessions during a camp at Notre Dame, and after it was over, Weis called him over.

“Coach Weis said, ‘Tyler I wasn’t expecting to like you, but I like you a lot,’ ” Greg said. “He said give me a couple of weeks to work some things out here as far as where to put you and we will get back to you. He said I think you will like what we have to say to you. We waited two weeks. It was that July 4 weekend, … that is when coach Weis offered him the scholarship.

“If it wasn’t for him seeing the talent that Ty had, we would never be where we were – being at Notre Dame.”

could be that Goody recruited him to ND and now Tyler is paying it forward and putting a bug in the ear of the coach

clearly TE has no influence as a rookie, but before you call it unlikely and in left field, does seem at least plausible for the Bengals who are in a WR hole and would like to get Eifert feeling at home as soon as possible

Kinda surprised by this.

Me too. I don't understand how a guy who couldn't start, much less play meaningful minutes at the college level as a 5th year senior, make an NFL team. But best of luck to John and Tyler at Cincinnati!

Kind of like a guy who never started a college football game becoming an NFL starter?

I'm with ya, though............. it's highly unlikely that he will be on the roster in Week 1 of the NFL season.

I wouldn't say they're in a hole at WR...

They've got AJ Green on the outside and Hawkins settled in the slot. The staff is confident that Sanu will be great opposite Green, and Marvin Jones played a lot last year as a rookie after Sanu went down. They still like Brandon Tate (though I don't know why) and Ryan Whalen as well.

If Sanu pans out like the staff believes and Jones continues to develope, the Bengals are fine at WR, especially with Eifert and Gresham having the ability to split out as well.

Players who can't lock down a starting spot in CFB but make can make an NFL squad says a lot about team talent.

It's easy to see, 2 dormers are better than one! Smart mature young men who went to classes and graduated can understand an nfl play book more often than not. When in doubt, pick the guy who has the diploma.
