Honestly, I think most teams outside of Georgia currently, would kill to have MF as their coach. I think he’s the best coach that Notre Dame‘s gonna get. Period. I just think he doesn’t have very good coordinators, especially Ash. Denbrock Needs a running quarterback To run his offense, or at least one that’s pretty mobile. Without it, he’s running half his playbook maybe. Really makes one wonder how it would’ve been if that quarterback that went to Kentucky would have hung around.

If a can’t make your offense work with future first round pick at QB, then the coach is the problem. Mobile or not, that isn’t going to fix Denbrock’s incredibly predictable offense.

No matter how good his offenses have been, we are leaving a lot of meat on that bone is all I'll say. I don't care what Denbrock does against Navy or Stanford, I want to see what he does against Miami. We as a team had two tests this year. Whole team, including Denbrock, failed the first one.
The players still have to execute though.

My issue with Ash is about him not adequately preparing players and putting them in position to succeed. I think the offensive issues come down more execution by players. Wasn't good enough against BYU. Everyone has to be better for Miami.

I’ll give an example of the stuff I’ve seen other posters type idk put yourself through the torture and rewatch some drives. Walton. That’s a big thing right? Denbrock didn’t play Walton. You know Walton got 2 of the first 3 carries of the 2H? That he entered the second drive of the 2H after James averaged 7 yards a carry in the 1H? Then after he got two short gains. The next play is below. Denbrock won’t use middle of the field, that’s another right? Here it is, double slants:

IMG_1315.jpeg

CJ throws to James instead of Gilbert, short of the sticks and behind him. Back to back punts after Greathouse drop on a post, again middle of the field, previous drive. We get the ball back from the muff. Driving. This is mesh rail and CJ throws the alarm vertical top of screen, not even in the concept because he thinks JG wins off the line. More middle of the field, possible YAC to TE or explosive to James.

IMG_1317.jpeg

This drive ends with a FG after the missed Flanigan fade and run. Those we want to criticize? Sure I said the RZ offense cost us the game. Personnel usage? 100%. And if all the above is ultimately the buck stops with Denbrock. Okay I guess also true. But I read these things especially like he’s never heard of the middle do the field or he doesn’t play Walton etc and it’s just fanciful

I agree that Carr deserves a lot of blame. Not only did he miss two easy TD throws, he missed open receivers all night including on the last play.

But Walton had 10 snaps.

Thats not enough for the biggest (only?) home run threat on the team. He needed to play more, especially when it became evident Carr was off and it was going to be hard to manufacture and sustain long drives.

We went 3 and out on the first two drives Walton played. We had 3, three and outs all game. An overlooked part of the 5 carry total.

James had more carries because when he was in the game, the runs were more successful thus more plays, more carries. James was cooking the entire 1H.

Throwing 62% of the time, only playing three WRs, and giving Carr more carries than Walton isn't about execution by players. (And if Carr is checking into those plays, tell him to stop.)

We're still doing this, huh?

Pretty much every single thing that could have gone wrong on Saturday did. From our three best defensive players being ejected or hurt to our 1st-round-pick QB making multiple bonehead plays to both coordinators calling shitty games to the refs seemingly conspiring against us in the closing moments. All of it against a top 10 team, at their place, that was playing its own personal Super Bowl.
And yet we still coulda/shoulda almost won. No matter how many carries Jonaz Walton didn't get.

Change pretty much any of the variables above and we do win. I don't say this to be complacent - we have a lot to clean up - but only to remind that college football is a random-ass sport - this is what makes it great - and we're looking at, basically, a one-game season in which everything that worked against us this past weekend can work in our favor on Nov. 7. And I choose to believe that it will.

…and we somehow fumbled a spike.

While we had a lot work against us, I wouldn’t say everything.

BYU literally muffed a punt and separately gave us the ball deep in their own territory off of a poor fake punt decision.

Re: injuries, arguably their best offensive player was out.

It doesn’t cancel out with our misfortune but I also want to be realistic. We helped them in a lot of ways, but we also benefited.

Hopefully the variable that changes for the Miami game, is the projected 1st round QB plays like one in a big game.

This. They also threw a pick, muffed a punt, and ran a stupid fake punt deep into their territory. They equally played a poor game if you ask me. Take off the blue & gold shades. They concerning part is, aside from special teams, they looked better pretty much everywhere.

Just rattling things off here ...

QB: BYU
Running game: Even (but they had their best player out of game)
Passing game: BYU
WR: BYU
Oline: Even
Running defense: BYU
Passing defense: BYU
D line: BYU
LB: BYU
Secondary: BYU
Special Teams: ND

BOOOOOOOO

Terrible answer. HC of ND football isn't jaded enough. Need someone analyzing and scrutinizing every call in the game, imo. BYU literally did just that with that fumble. Michigan did just that with their phantom one second fiasco. The end of the BYU/UCF was a disaster. There are literally countless games this year where refs have screwed up big time in games. If you're "trusting the officials to get that call right," then you deserve the results of said calls.
