Here’s my thing with his end zone misses:

They repped all week with 87 Flanagan at TE. He gets hurt. Gameplan stays the same. They try the same concepts based on their prep
With Flanigan and Larsen. Dudes are two steps slower. Carr puts the ball where he expects Flanagan to be based on reps. Overthrows each time.

Is that on CJ? A bit. Is it on Denbrock for not adjusting gameplan? Yep.

There’s some nuance there I’m not inclined to put all on “CJ had a bad night.”
I can give you that one. The pass the Faison and the fumble nope. That’s still 10 points.

Too many fades and 50/50 balls that is just lazy play calling or just lazy throws. Carr and Denbrock Marriage needs to end.

While I don’t think today was an acceptable performance throughout too many levels of the program. Coaches, players, and both sides of the ball. I do think we need to chill on calling for firing of coaches. Let’s finish the season and see how it ends

Has there been a time we’ve been wrong?

Why are he and Denbrock so scared to throw passes over the middle? If they really don't trust him to do that...woof.

Next day reflection: Carr is overrated for how we viewed him, but he’s still a damn good QB, probably close to top 5 in CFB still. The sick part of all this is if one of 3-4 end zone fades (or you know… just other routes towards end zone) on the last drive are completed, people would call that his Heisman moment like they did last year Mendoza against PSU, despite it being a bad game overall.

Not sure I’d want to spend ~8M on a QB that folds like a lawn chair against competent competition.

There’s not a better option out there, and he gets so much real NIL I wonder how much ND actually has to pony up. But you damn well better get him Jesse Legree or whoever the top portal receiver is. Thats probably the only portal piece they need on offense if he stays.

Our GM needs to be very close with carr’s agent this week, and if they don’t know ensure they find out if there’s any intent or chance for Carr to be back next season.

Why do I say that, because if Carr and nd don’t beat Miami you start playing Grubbs and Teddy a lot more. 10-2 is an unacceptable record this year so 10-2 or 9-3 makes no difference.

I used to think that too, but now I’m not sure. If he’s just gonna piss his pants in every ranked matchup, go get Grunkemeyer for a half or two-thirds the price.

A change at OC and a real addition of a portal WR would have my attention though.

If the choice is Grunkmeyer with Denbrock or CJ with new OC I know what choice I think we’d all make

The staff didn’t do
CJ any favors not going out and getting a stud WR. They whiffed big time. Zero excuses that is priority one. Faison and Greathouse probally both gone after this year

I’ve never been sold on Carr. I always thought the preseason hype was overblown (pay myself on the back). But he’s a capable and winning QB.

With that said Denbrock doesn’t call games in big games well. Miami was too conservative and these route trees seem to be lazy and elementary. He calls plays (especially in big games) like he’s protecting Carr.

I dont think Denbrock or CJ trust him to throw the short stuff accurately. Everything is to the outside.

We have seen this song and dance before. We can call for all the changes and like people have said they won’t listen to the fans and half the time from the donors.

It is unacceptable for a program like ND to have this kind of recruiting, the cost of this portal class to go shit the bed in their first real opponent of the year.

I have 0 faith that we can beat Miami in 3 weeks.

He’s def not ready for the NFL he needs another year can’t convince me otherwise. Now if we run the table and win the title i’ll change my mind. But until he comes out and shreds a top 15 defense he needs another year

Add me to this list. Zero faith that we beat Miami, Toney is going for 200 over the middle on this defense and we will show the same shit offense as usual.

He thinks he is Manning of the 2005 colts and he isn’t. They need to limit his checks, we have heard Freeman say multiple time see checked into the wrong play. Then stop.

Are there any other "top 5" QBs so afraid to run the ball? Time to earn that money. Even the hint of CJ as a running threat, I really think would open up the offense quite a bit.

I think the uproar around Carr is probably too much, I would still absolutely take him over Minchey and think he's one of the 5ish best QBs in the country. But he sure as hell does not look like a guy who's ready to be the 1st overall pick QB. At least not for another year.

Carr played awful and is IMO the primary reason we lost but he’s still better than Sayin, Hoover, McIntyre/Brandon, Nico’s backup, Hammond. Bear and Dampier are kinda system guys that aren’t really comparable. I didn’t see Mensah against FSU at all, we’ll see on that. Same with Stockton. Russell hasn’t been able to do a thing against real defenses. Leavitt and Minchey have more easy button systems but I don’t think they are better. Trinidad is a better college QB for sure.

So like I think Carr cost us the game, but if, if they get there, there also isn’t a QB besides one where I’m like yes, swap instantly.

He's a top 5 QB when he plays our shitty schedule. Or maybe with a different OC. But against competent defenses, this QB/OC combo is a liability.

First, I believe in Carr and think he will respond and play really well vs Miami.

But if he doesn’t and we lose and he goes pro without making cfp, he will go down as the biggest disappointment at qb in ND history. Not because of ability or stats, but because of what the two teams should have been if he played up even close to his ability in the big games. We realistically had a shot to win it all last year and this year and not making the cfp will be his lasting memory.

We have been so talented the last 2 years. There isn’t one game we won the last 2 years where we needed him to win it. We needed him in 3 games, and those 3 games he’s been ok to poor. We need him vs Miami and possibly smu (we may just be able to run all over smu).

Carr had all day to throw the first 3.5 quarters and just missed so many throws, late on throws, bad reads, bad audibles, and ultimately left so much points out there. Good qb play, not great, and we win by 8-10 despite all the other issues.

I’d love to hear from the Xs & Os guys on here as I’m no QB expert. Is Carr taking all the “pre-snap reads” stuff too far and it’s becoming more of a hindrance? in 4th quarter, Denbrock called for “hurry up offense” and they had BYU out of position. Unfortunately, Carr slowed everything down w/ changes at the LOS giving BYU plenty of time to get set. Did I misinterpret that in real time or could Carr have had a big gainer had he got something off quick while BYU was trying to set their D?

I feel the bad passing attack/QB play is the result of Carr regressing, but thinking he is the coach on the field, predictable play calling and poor receiver coaching. Even look at Stanford: most of the catches were contested. The D knew where we were going with the ball almost every time we passed.

Freeman needs to do something. Scrap the offfensive game plan in the next 3 weeks before Miami and start over. We are not even a top 30 offense right now. Too many red zone failures.

If Denbrock really wanted to hurry up, he has until 15 left on the play clock to be in CJ's ear telling him "No checks, just run the play."
