In a matter of 4 years we're getting pushed from 4 to 12 to 24, and make no mistake 24 will absolutely dilute the best part of college football...its regular season. It's what separates college from NFL and gives us the games of the century like ND-FSU 1993, Bama - LSU 2011, Michigan-OSU 2006 etc. I would argue 8 is a fine number.

The players didn't ask for more games and a longer season.
The schedule interferes with final exams and the portal.
More risk of injury.
More travel.
Much more expensive for fans to enjoy in person.
Fewer meaningful regular season games except for a 8-4 NC State team trying to make this "playoff."

Plain and simple it's a desperate money grab by these schools and AD's who claim to be broke. "Hey guys let's make the product worse and make a lot more money from it." Sounds like a recipe baked by a private equity shop.

I'm so disgusted with the whole thing and it's a sad day when this becomes reality.

Oh and btw...ND fucked themselves in 2025. Don't give up 44 points to A&M at home and you're in.
I understand your concerns, but I don't believe the portal or season end date will be affected.

As to A&M, ND was dealing with many key issues at the time and lost by 1 to postseason #8 due to a non-call of A&M tackling a pass rusher at the end. The fact that playing the #7 seed evenly was our most damning performance speaks volumes.

What's most important is the committee had previously committed to taking the best teams at season's end, not the most deserving, and there could be no intelligent argument that ND was not a Top 5 most formidable team at that point. We could easily argue they were the scariest team in the nation at regular season's end.

Also him calling the schedule embarrassing is pretty much admitting that he doesn’t think BYU is actually a top 10 quality team. If BYU was swapped with Alabama, I doubt you’d hear a peep from the media, despite them being ranked adjacent to each other.

Also, it is incredibly condescending and dismissive to Wisconsin, MSU, Purdue, Navy, etc. I'm not trying to say that these are current powerhouses or whatever but to call them "embarrassing," when you are the key mouthpiece of the key media company for CFB and the CFP is classless and trashy. For a program, College Gameday, that was already under some heat for it's condescending dismissal of smaller CFB programs, their main guy isn't really doing much to disprove the idea that College Gameday just straight up doesn't give a fuck about CFB and exists only to craft narratives.

The opening salvo of the season from ESPN so far, NDs schedule is an embarrassment and incredibly unfair per Kirk:

we do not play Howard or Lousiana Lafayette or Little sisters of the poor either
Georgia and Alabama do.

“They haven’t played anybody close to a Top 25 team”

- Bruce Feldman on Fox halftime

Wisconsin of course, is effectively #26 in this weeks AP Poll.

Neither has BYU! Why are we expected to play a tough schedule and no one else is when we are both fighting for the same playoff spots? This media frenzy of this same talking point is ridiculous.

^is also the best argument for completely reevaluating SOS / "ranked wins" as an argument. No one really knows who will be good year to year anymore, and there isn't such a divide between "top tier" and the bottom as their used to be.

I don't like the expansion to 24, but I get it. 24 gets you the top third of the P4 teams, all of which are going to be reasonably competitive. Still think 16 was the true Goldilocks number.

I hope the new format does indeed pan out well for ND...

"... The theory: Because teams can afford to lose as many as four games, they will schedule more difficult, big-brand matchups to increase television value, tickets sales and sponsorships. Think more games like Oklahoma-Michigan, Texas-Ohio State and Notre Dame-Georgia.

That belief isn't held by all. Why would schools want to risk a loss, negatively impact their seeding and potentially even cost themselves a playoff spot?

They wouldn't.

Also, the conferences each now play nine league games. An 11th or even a 12th game against a power conference program leads to team fatigue that may impact future games.

All of that said, conversations continue between the SEC and Big Ten over a long-discussed scheduling agreement. That goes for Notre Dame, too. Bevacqua has engaged in real dialogue with Sankey and Petitti about playing more games against opponents in those two conferences."

Will conferences be motivated to cut deadweight like Rutgers and Arkansas to free up scheduling flexibility for better non-conference matchups? Will FCS scrimmages be worth it when an 11 game schedule vs big boys be worth the extra week off at some point?

I mean if we lose a close game to Miami whose currently number one how far do you really think they will drop us we are 4th now? I don't see us dropping more than 8-10. That means 4 teams ranked behind us will have to jump us somehow if we don't lose.

Current Rankings:
5TH: Georgia 1 LOSS, still plays Florida, Ole Miss
6th: Indiana 1 LOSS, Still plays Michigan, USC
7th: Ole Miss 1 LOSS, still plays Texas, Oklahoma, Auburn, Georgia
8th: Texas Tech 0 LOSSES doesn't really play anyone besides Arizona
9th: UCLA 0 LOSSES, Plays Michigan and USC Still
10th: UTAH 0 LOSSES, Plays Houston, BYU, Arizona, TCU
11th: TENN 1 LOSS, Plays Kentucky, A&M, LSU
12th: KENTUCKY 1 LOSS, Plays Tenn, Florida, MISS
13TH: BAMA 2 LOSSES, Plays LSU
14th: HOUSTON 1 LOSS

The thing that's gonna kill us is say Bama ends up with 3 losses and ranked 13th vs us at 12th last week, they'll most likely jump us because of their ranked win at Kentucky.

It's kind of silly but our chances are better at 11-2 laying a turd against SMU or BC or Syracuse and beating Miami.

Screw the SEC and their circular referenced "ranked teams" - entire conference should be docked for their playoff performance eating up piles of spots the last two years. With money above the table they will continue to struggle to compete.
