This. Forget anything you've heard, that '05 game was huge. Yeah, we had lost a close one to MSU earlier that season, but the energy in the stadium for USC was different. I've been going to games since '93, I've never heard that stadium louder than '05 USC and I haven't since (Although there's been a few close ones. '23 OSU comes to mind).
i think it depends a little on how you define it
Nationally, this game is much bigger then 2005 no question of it
and the build up to it is much greater

I have spoken to some who were there and describe it; so no doubt on campus it was huge
but not close nationally

I'm not sure this is true. Both ND and Miami, while being ranked high, are not on anyone's radar right now because "neither team has played anyone".

Anecdotally, I was living in LA in '05 and had a group of about 20 buddies that are college football fans from all over the country. I'm the only ND fan and there were only 2 SC fans in the group. In the 25 years I've known these guys, the 05 SC-ND game is the only instance where i got texts from everyone starting from the opening kickoff. A lot of people watched that game. Add yes, the stadium was the loudest i've ever seen. You could feel it in your chest.

Not why you're so committed to downplaying the 05 game but it was a huge game. It was all anybody wanted to talk about in the weeks leading up to it. I was in high school in Tennessee at the time and people were planning their Saturday around it.

If anything I'd say the Miami game is less hyped because this country has lost a lot of monoculture in the last twenty years.

Also with the playoffs the stakes are a little lower. If both of us are undefeated going into the game then the stakes are “bye week or hosting a first round playoff game” as opposed to a loss eliminating one team from the NC picture altogether.

if miami loses-what is their actual playoff resume assuming the irish can get the W at BYU? Curious as the loser may fall due to the weak schedule.

ESPN put the pep rally for the 2005 USC game on the air. That's a good sign of how huge it was.

I think this game is absolutely massive for the fans of both teams and if it was still the BCS, it would be just as big as 05 USC because it would almost be a semifinal game.

Yeah the USC game has the second greatest buildup to a game I had ever seen. 93 FSU was the biggest. I was out of the country in 05 and it was being talked about. I remember reading a ton of articles across multiple platforms in prep for the game. I listened to a national radio broadcast of the game myself. Besides a playoff game I'm not sure if we have ever had a home game on national radio. GT is talking nonsesne.

Even without the BCS, this is going to be as big as 05 USC. The ND fan base wants blood for Miami/acc talking all that shit and ultimately keeping us out last year. Each home game that gets closer to Miami, you can feel the excitement building and thats been for shitty games.

Nov 7th will be remembered with the best of them.

You are blind to the fact that 99% of the country is not within 50 miles of Notre Dame.
NATIONALLY, there is no comparison

I certainly did not get that vibe back in 2005. I was in New York and there was no mention of it at all until the game itself showed so much

stakes are a little lower but the hype will be much more due to how much social media there is now vs 2005
and lets be real honest here: ND was coming off of the Willingham years and no one thought all that much of us at that time

Most anticipated game since 93 for me as a fan, simply because I really didn't think they had a very good shot of beating USC in 05.

Wha??

More anticipated than the two national championship games we played in since 93?
Or the home playoff game vs IU?
Or the Sugar Bowl vs Georgia?
Or the Orange Bowl vs Penn St?
What about the covid game vs Clemson?

The NC Game in 2012 was more nationally hyped because of the time there was to build it up
The NC game vs OSU was not as big since there was not as long
The Playoff games had lots of competition
the covid game had covid to take a lot of the attention

This is an alltime terrible take. 2 time defending champion versus a ND that was back with Tom Brady’s OC and a sick passing offense. There hasn’t been a more hyped college game since and with the death of the monoculture might not be one again
