Luckily, Monds won't be our only option like Buchner was in 22.

This might be a blessing in disguise for the long term future of the qb position. He won't show up expecting to start right away and might wait his turn.
Yep. A lot of this will depend on Monds' expectations. If he wants to play no matter what, he'll likely spend one frustrated year at Notre Dame and transfer to somewhere that will give him a shot based on tools alone. If he's willing to be patient and develop, he could still be great. We'll see.

Monds 100% should stay in high school and get reps for the sake of his long term development. He isn’t showing up and beating Teddy or Grubbs now, but what do I know. I don't even know if that’s an option anymore.

I’m not worried about QB anymore. The portal is always there and ND could always snag a big fish if they need to.

I think we're getting a little hyperbolic here. Not great that hes not playing this year, obviously. 7 days ago people were anointing him as the starter next year lol. This is a continuation of his injury from last year, guessing they tried to let a labrum heal on its own, its bothering him, in order to hit the ground running in January at ND he decided to get it repaired now.

Comparison to Buchner is nonsense outside of limited snaps. TB was an athlete trying to play QB while Monds is a QB with athleticism.

Monds also isn’t playing lacrosse in the offseason like Buchner. He’s still training + playing 7v7

Monds will come to college having played basically one season of high school football. It's not ideal. He has all the tools, I'm glad he'll be healthy, and 7v7 is fine and good. But actual experience playing real games matters too. I wouldn't minimize it.

he’s much better than Buchner, but he definitely should stay in high school and play. The rush to get to college is irrational aside from the NIL money.

He’s not a kid that’s been held back. He’s young, he’s not only skipping his senior year, but half of his junior year, all to get to that NIL money.

Just guarantee him the money if he enrolls as a freshman and let him get that year of snaps under his belt. This is getting out of hand.

Be worried if we hear reports about a QB guru changing his mechanics.

Notre dame isn't QB charity
No, it's not. But if Champ believes he should run with his current highest valuation before new legislation passes, he should take what ND is offering with the expectation a re-negotiated salary will be coming after his first year. Then he'll continue to renegotiate while getting world class coaching + S&C and be prepared to challenge after his sophomore year.

If I were an elite athlete and I had the ND offer, I'd take it given the uncertainties. It's possible he leaves money on the table, it's also possible he's striking while the iron is hottest. Bird in the hand and all that.

I'm saying ND should put that NIL into someone who isn't injury prone

Hopefully he can reclassify back to the 2028 class- I'd rather see him play high school football than waste a year at ND coming back from an injury.

If he did reclassify back to the 2028 class does he stay committed to ND?

I would say there is close to zero chance of him going back to 2028. He is expected to graduate after this semester

It’s really irrelevant. If you miss you just portal a guy. Take a flier on Monds and if it hits, winner. If it doesn’t, go get the best guy in the portal. It’s not like this is 2019 and we’re in uncharted waters, here.

Why would he ever reclass BACK? He can get elite D1 coaching and rehab program for a year of development. If he needs a 5th year he's probably not good enough to be an impact starter at ND anyways. And he's getting NIL money. If you believe in his physical tools you need to get him right instead of relying on a HS coach.

Let's just send him out to the beach to rehab with George Whitfield Jr. and his broomsticks

Right and I'm saying that's frustratingly shortsighted but common thinking. Keeping him and developing him for a year is all it'll take to know if he is willing to stick it out and continue developing or if both parties decide to separate.

Bailing on him this late in the cycle in hopes of finding a better replacement is....not a choice I'd make. A portal exists and if he rehabs/recovers and develops, could be an incredible future QB. At least we can read these takes down the road for entertainment.

I don't think what he would see in a senior year of high school would be better for him than a year in a big time college program imo. Let him show up, if he plays in 27 or 28 then he earned it.

Not sure why people think ND will go to the portal next year. You guys do realize everyone starts out with "no experience" like CJ Carr did last year. Freeman has already stated that he does not want to get a one year rental. Guess what, after 2027, they will still have no one with experience.

People who think ND will go to the portal for QB just aren't paying attention. They are the same people who thought ND would get a "backup" QB this year from the portal.

“the season-ending injury to 2027 QB recruit Champ Monds pushes the possibility of pursuing a one-year transfer at quarterback for next season closer to the probable pile.”

Keep killing it!
