Yeah, the game plan was to deny the deep and mid passing game while making the OL (with every players either playing a new position or new starters - LT, RG who was replaced!) and RB with all new starters in the 1st game of the year, beat them. Decent game plan for the first half. ND did what Championship level teams do and responded in taking over the 2nd half.

Have these same talking heads been talking about how they have a lot of questions about Ole Miss or Louisville’s offense? Because that shootout was 10-6 at the half before the offenses got hot. Oregon had 14 at the half and only ended up with 34. Where are those panic bells? It’s bad faith arguments by people who consistently show to not what they are talking about.

Just gonna leave this here. It seemed to me Wisconsin was dead set on sitting in quarters and keeping everything in front of them. They got cooked when they went to man. Not a single concern for me

I've said it since Michigan "won" their title a few years ago. If we're ever going to win one, we'll need to use a similar formula. Physical defense, run the ball, and win a lot of tough games that may not look flashy on the box score. With no explosiveness on offense, that seems to be the only way to do it.

There won't be any panic about Oregon because people associate Boise with being a pretty good football team.

There wont be questions about Ole Miss or Louisville because both were ranked and they put up points. They are also small state schools with almost exclusively local/regional following.

Notre Dame got off to a slow start against a (perceived) bad Wisconsin program AND *anything* negative about Notre Dame generates attention. Even if Wisconsin hadnt been a dumpster fire the last few years, some folks would've been talking about it because....

Negative ND attention (especially when expectations are high) is like catnip for a lot of people. People will keep reading/listening.

The thing that bothers me about the Boise situation is that nobody said anything about them being a good team last year when they were saying we only beat two teams with a pulse. Close games to inferior teams happen, even for great teams, but that's way different than the pumping up BSU just because Oregon had a close call with them. I think the latter has been happening a bit too much in the media.

I think out of all the teams on our schedule Wisconsin could have the 4th best defense we face all year.

In the Brian Kelly playoff era, the ND teams would have WR Corps that looked solid against average teams, it's when they matched up against elite competition where it became glaringly obvious that ND lacked that playmaker on the outside. You could predict when ND would play an Alabama, Clemson, some USC defenses, etc and the opponent would play man and stack the box and Ian Book would have no options.

With the expectation that this squad win a national title, that is what is making people nervous. Now it's only week 2, so I am not panicking at all. But man they really need some 350+ yard games for Carr to shine. Running the ball and dumping to TEs and Faison will not win a title against an elite defense. Clearly Wisconsin was playing two high to challenge ND's run game, and it worked for a half.

Fickell and Tressel saw this on film. Denbrock's game is the power running coupled with explosive pass plays. Wisconsin schemed accordingly. They coached with Denbrock at Cincinnati. They all go back.

Some addled yokels might empty the entire playbook in the first half of the first game. There was no need for that. Thankfully this program has guys smarter than that calling the shots.

I think the way the argument is being framed, which this is just what ND in the media cycle deals with, is the mind numbingly stupid part. Most rational ND fans would have zero problem with this statement: Offense struggled early, looked better in the 2H, still looking for who emerges opposite Faison but solid Week 1 win. Great! The idea that the Wisconsin game is proof of a material downgrade or change from a week ago before everyone played is crazy. People that had us as title contenders a week ago are stepping back from it. Prister called it a “911” situation.

The “pitch” for ND as a title contender was never that we had better WRs than OSU or Oregon. It was never that the RBs are Love/Price. It is Carr, it is the OL, it is every single position on defense, particularly the #1 secondary and much improved DL. It is the coordinators and mostly importantly it is Freeman. All the same.

Granted I love our WR room but if the staff knew Porter might not play this year I find it hard to believe they would go into a Championship or bust season with a Franchise QB having your top 4 WR's be.

4. Gilbert-hasn't been having luck with injuries.
From now to week 6 we need one of these guys to start getting reps and providing some spark. (Fitz, Frazier, Burress, Finley)

They didn't know, but I think they panicked/scrambled after putting most of (if not all) of their eggs in the Marsh basket. There were other WR's with proven production available I don't recall ND being seriously involved with them. At least publicly.

ND was like a Top 5 explosive run game and Top 10 explosive pass game in P4 last year.

We have played one game, in which we often only ran two WRs out there (and Faison and Gilbert looked fine). I’m gonna give it a beat or two before getting too worried about who isn’t playing.
