Just making it in won't save any jobs. If a team with a $40M roster keeps getting in at #17 every year and loses in the first round, that coach is gone.

Spoke with a 97 year gentlemen today. We talked about college football and he said that he remembers his dad whining about expanding bowl games and sees expanding the playoffs sort of the same. He sees it as some bowl games just meaning more and some teams winning playing an extra game. We got to a point where bowl games mattered until they didn’t and people sat and bowls became practice games and a lot of people asked how we can make it worth playing in… here we go. I think that changed my mind. Give me 24 teams.

Why not if all the P4 conferences going to a 9-game conference schedule keep doing this...

It's looking like it'll actually be 20 teams, which seems kinda dumb "splitting the baby"... 16 = no byes, 20 = are they going to go "March Madness" style 4x play in games with 12 regular qualifiers?

I don’t hate it the extra 8 if they are through conference championships before the round of 16. Still Prefer to stay 12.

If they think a Missouri vs South Carolina play in game will be better at replacing lost revenue, good lord.

So the top 12 teams are in and then 13-20 are play in games replacing conference championship week? 1-4 seeds get a two week bye?

I'm confused.

Maybe top 16 are in and 17-20 are play in games. Top 16 get one week bye?

The suggestion from Pate seems to be Top 16 would be in with the last 4 spots having conference affiliation play in games.

18 Arizona vs 21 Houston
19 Michigan vs 23 Iowa
17 Virginia vs 22 Georgia Tech
UR Missouri vs UR Tennessee

Based off final 2025 rankings
* Expect some of those token G6 rankings suddenly vanish

Just go straight to a 24 team playoff where the top 8 have a bye. It’s not that hard.

Seems bad for us if this is the case.

The whole thing is such a scam that clearly they will never have it be UR Missouri vs UR Tennessee for a Top 20 Playoff. More than likely, both drift up in the rankings and/or Vanderbilt drifts down.

Having 20 teams is just dumb when in reality there’s only about 6 teams even capable of winning it. It just means more meaningless games where a QB could get hurt.

It’s almost like playoffs haven’t been about legitimacy or real champions since your grandfather was younger than you and it’s all just a non stop money grab now… shame no one called this long ago

Really don't understand the handwringing.

If someone really wouldn't watch the playoffs because the 4 seed is favored by 23.5 over the 18 seed, I probably wouldn't wanna watch ball with that person anyway.

Give me a 24 Team Playoff where fanbases have something to look forward to in November over the current meaningless bowl format any day.

A game like Missouri vs Tennessee and Iowa vs Michigan already happens every single year in the regular season, you are just making November football more important for teams 15 - 30 sure. But you’re making it also less important for teams 1 - 15.

Schools are going to be clamoring for more revenue to make up for all the increased program expenses, now that they actually have to pay the players. Maximizing revenue is a necessary step or a lot of mid-tier and lower programs are going to flounder.

I'm not sure how I feel about the field getting as large as 24 but it would have similarities to current 12-team field, but obviously larger, so would be a lot of exciting games (hopefully including more home-team stadium games in the early rounds), even if there would be some like 17 Virginia vs 22 Georgia Tech.

With this larger field, please 86 the CCGs - Those games just don't make sense at this point, and you may end up having teams play each other 3x in one season.

I think the last part to make such a large field work is to somehow mandate (stick) or encourage (carrot) the P4 conference teams to schedule at least one tough, real in-season OOC matchup (which would help ND a lot); "it's necessary to secure a 24-team CFP spot, or you'll receive more $ or a higher ranking (i.e., maybe more points, etc.) in the final 24-team CFP ranking."

This should all lead to a lot of exciting football and include a lot of great in-season matchups including OOC ones.

It just seems the P4 teams are already pretty sold (just not SEC last I remember) on a much larger CFP field and format so let's try to now make the ENTIRE season exciting as possible and stop the cancellations of so many exciting OOC home-and-home series and rivalry games.
