Seen another couple of angles as well.
It really does appear that Phelps was looking at his parents directly above the Liberty dugout. Liberty dugout takes offense and starts yelling at Phelps. Phelps responds and starts chirping back. Add in a few waving hand gestures and we have an ejection.

Really? To me it looks like he's looking at the opposing dugout when he turns to the right and maybe making a "balls" gesture pretty quickly after turning. We can't see his eyes though, maybe someone in the stands has a video.
[EDIT] Ok, I found another video. You may be right, he may have been talking to his parents at first possibly, but then it looks like he gestures to the dugout and maybe says something, which causes someone from Liberty's dugout to take the field.
You can see this one it looks like the Liberty coach comes storming out of the dugout after Phelps says something to them I guess. That said, he's apparently suspended for the next game and they're in the post season, which to me feels like too much. Probably should have known better though!

I'm with you on this one. I'm also old school and hate excessive or choreographed celebrations in sports. Baseball has long had a tradition of no showboating after hitting a homer. It'll get you or a teammate hit at the plate in retaliation. This was over that line.
