At this point, in regards to DT, I would let Partridge look through the list in the portal and handpick who he wants to bring in for a visit and make sure we close the deal on them. He's had success finding diamonds in the rough and I could see him being able to find a couple dudes the quality we got with Dawson.

Keeley 15%. Everyone else 3%. This portal embarrassment will have to be part of the us vs the world narrative. Everyone will be laughing and posting memes from here until the season.
Only if ND was a portal team. They’re not. ND fans are comparing themselves to teams whose only hope is now the portal: IU, TTU, Ole Miss, etc. Good for them b/c they’d likely never compete on the national stage w/o the portal/NIL. These are the teams where fans should be worried if they don’t clean up in the portal. The flip side is that they are overpaying for 99% of these players b/c the supply does not meet the demand.

Exactly. Dawson was nowhere near one of the top DTs last portal yet he fit ND’s need. Meanwhile SC overpaid for the 4-star stud from KY who didn’t even start.

Curious if anyone knows what happened with two guys who visited that no one is talking about, Thompson, de from MSU and the qb from Mercer. Did we pass?
Oh yeah Townsend, KR from Iowa St, same question.

Hopefully, a quality DT will jump into the Portal after the first wave of guys have signed with most of thr big spenders and ND can backdoor their way into a good player!

Two impact guys is still the need at that position, then hopefully we luck out and get Onye back to round out the top 4 with Hughes and Mullins, Dixon and Burgess can act as quality depth!

I'm fully convinced, probably wrong but, that everybody else plays ball totally different than us in this NIL thing. Honestly, no matter what offer we make to Graham or any WR somebody else will offer more. Whatever offer we make is probably a good offer, but I get strong Billy Bean Moneyball vibes that we're going to be outbid. Simply telling the kid that this is a "good offer" isn't going to cut it with a lot of these dudes in the portal. They're going to go where they make the most money, especially if there's an agent/uncle involved.

I think the important thing to remember is that not all offers are the same. None of these are straight up cash value offers with no other caveats. I used to work in real estate and would always warn sellers that the biggest offer isn't always the best offer. The details matter. I know ND is smart. They know how to write great offers. But if kids, or their parents, or their agents are only focused on the dollar sign, then it's easy to understand how they can get fleeced into thinking that was a "better" deal. Just my opinion.

Jared Dawson has become the 3 star who made it exception we pretend is the rule. The staff has, at least thus far, definitely missed their top DT prospects.

This is a title season with an empty interior. I’m not feeling warm and fuzzy relying on a bunch of exceptions.

More guys could still jump in. ND could be back channeling for someone behind the scenes. I find it hard to belive that the staff will just shrug thrit shoulders and ignore and obvious need. They're every bit as aware as we are that they need impact DTs.

I basically agree with this. Anyone saying otherwise is huffing the cope. ND staff identified multiple prospects and then proceeded to struggle to get them on campus and/or sign them (as of this typing). Portal rankings are dumb and mean nothing. What matters is who the staff identified as "their guy" and did they manage to lock him up or not. So far, they haven't. The good news is that wave 2 seems pretty solid, so missing on wave 1 might end up a blessing in disguise. Time will tell.

If we thought we had a deal for Marsh for a month, how TF did they let him visit IU first. I really don’t understand this portal stuff. With the unique entrance requirements, I’m not sure how you get caught so off guard if you’re planning on advance correctly. I have faith we will get what we need and appreciate the more nuanced approach to the portal and finding guys who fit the profile you need to fit your roster, but damn someone pass me a new Depend

After Friday night, we could see some guys who lost in the playoffs jump into the portal.

From source
Things aren't as bad as they seem. Some struggles inside the recruiting office. Martin has been working tail off, being asked to do too much. Says Carter is the man. Said offers are close to being on par with everyone, but don't believe upping the ante is necessary.

Indiana did Notre Dame flat out dirty in regards to Marsh. ND took him at his word and was damn near a done deal for a month.

Many holes to jump through when it comes to transferring into ND. Can't just say "hey, be here next week."

Foley asked for stupid money. ND, said go back home.

Money is not the issue. Have 60+ million to spend.

All in all, source said Lax is pretty much spot on with his posts. So kudos to him.

He said things are looking up, but have to close. Roster will be fine. They are learning from mistakes in regards to portal recruiting. Pretty much can't take anyone for their work right now. Wild wild west

CJ making stupid money
There is a huge difference between having $60 million, and being willing to pull the trigger on spending. ND (to their credit) is an extremely financially frugal and careful operation. However, you have to know that in Portal recruiting you're going to get into bidding wars at times and if you want to add impact talent you have to be willing to spend more than you're comfortable spending in some instances.

For example, if you like your TE room and you think Brody Foley is a minor upgrade or simply augments the talent you already have, and he's asking for $1.5 million, when the going rate for a quality TE is $750,000, I can understand you'll telling him to kick rocks.

However, if an impact DT is asking for $2 million, and you're offering $1.5 million and the extra $500,000 is the difference between getting the deal done, or losing the player you want, an extra $500,000 out of apparent $60 million pool is extremely minor in the grand scheme of things.

It would be interesting to be a fly on the wall in some of these negotiations and subsequent decisions.

The 85th ranked corner was pretty good too.

Matt Freeman just now, Graham arrived last night and met with Freeman and Denbrock. Visit went great and Tae is a big reason he made it to campus.

LSU and Auburn in hunt but update was very positive

Yeah, that one is fishy. Also, if Notre Dame had him locked up for let's say $2 million, and thought he was worth that, and Indiana came over the top for $2.3 million, I can't imagine that ND wouldn't be willing to match or surpass that total if the NIL pool is actually $60 million. The potential ROI (enhanced chances at the playoffs, yielding millions, possibly tens of millions if you host) seems too obvious to pass up over a few hundred thousand dollars....

Not sure how you could stop him from visiting IU first. IU had likely already communicated how much they were willing to pay. My assumption is that it was more than ND. The ONLY thing ND could do at that point is to adjust the offer or threaten to rescind the offer to Marsh.

Not sure how interested ND would be in increasing the offer to someone who they felt double crossed them.
