Visiting UF again this weekend.

Schools standing out right now are UF, ND, OU, Stanford, and Miami (no order and not a Top 5)

One thing to watch is where the other kids from "Team Tampa" go. A lot of them like UF so if they start committing there the Gators could be tough to beat.

Sooner Intel: Recruiting news and notes - Oklahoma Sooners Blog - ESPN

Can't read the article, but he must have some family tie to an ex-Oklahoma assistant. Might mean nothing, might mean everything.
It means nothing...

Norris coached at OU from 1973-83 as the defensive line coach. He was a coach at a camp that Sherit attended last year, and Norris raved about Sherit to his longtime friend, OU defensive ends coach Bobby Jack Wright.

Barely any connection at all.

Top 5: OU, Florida, Notre Dame, Stanford and Miami (Fla.)

So it isn't even a family tie? Damn misleading headlines.

Come on now, let's be gentle to the old alma mater.

Sidenote, they've actually recruited Florida quite well in the past.

I would attribute their success in Florida to Ron Zook. Beckman really has no ties to the state.

Right, I know. But it would make sense for Beckman to try and maintain those connections, no? My only point was that it isn't completely strange for them to be recruiting down there.

And I agree with Buster, I'm really liking Beckman so far.

Beckman is a stud though, but I completely agree with you.

Just curious as to why you think Beckman is a "stud?" He has gone 21-16 in his career as a head coach.

beckman's a dynamic recruiter and a players coach, but i don't think he'll ever be a successful head coach at the high BCS level...maybe he'll prove me wrong.

A record for a young coach is probably one of the least indicative ways to look at a coach.

I almost coached at Toledo (instead opting to transfer to Ohio State), but I know my fair share of people around the program. They had nothing but good things to say about him and are extremely confident that he'll do well at Illinois. You also should keep in mind that the three coaches he was under before becoming the head coach at Toledo are elite coaches. Mike Gundy, Jim Tressel, and Urban Meyer; that's not too shabby.

He turned the Toledo program around from a laughingstock to a conference contender in two years. He will end up being another UT coach to do well at bigger schools (Gary Pinkel and Nick Saban being others).

Fair points. I really didn't know his background so I was just curious what you knew being from around there.

I'll second all of this.

I follow Illinois football closely, and he's done nothing but garner rave reviews in his time down there thus far. Clearly, it's too early to really judge anything, but the program was in a pretty deep mess when he got there and still is. He has a good pedigree and made some very good assistant coaching hires, especially Billy Gonzales. He's also already proving his recruiting, bringing in Aaron Bailey.

I hope he can turn that program around, not only because I went there and loved it, but hopefully if the team gets rolling, Illinois can take something away from OSU and Michigan every year. That would only help ND, of course, which is just alright by me.
