Just checked the USC sites. It's funny...early yesterday morning, they said he had an offer and that he would commit today or this weekend, and that he was so excited by the USC offer that he would graduate early exclusively for USC. By about noon, they were saying he did not have an official offer, that they wanted to make sure that he could qualify to graduate early (there are quite a few players that they will accept ONLY if they graduate early). And the last report, last night, said that Hawkins will not commit this weekend after all, and if he did commit anywhere it would be to Stanford. Quite a day!
My take: USC will take him IF he graduates early. Hawkins at first was pumped by the offer (as was his USC fan dad), but then they realized that USC is not showing the full love that Stanford and other programs are showing him by making him graduate early. So now they're having second thoughts. USC tried this with another player last year, and that player said forget you (I believe it was Jabari Ruffin - not 1000% sure). USC then backtracked and told him he could come whenever he wanted, and then he committed to USC after all. Could see a similar case play out with Hawkins, even if he does declare Stanford his leader this weekend...
I think you're thinking of Scott Starr. His situation was similar to Chris Hawkins'
