To clarify my earlier post [and to thank Rhode for clearly seeing and understanding it] I was talking about the first few days of Spring competition, NOT the first few real games next year. No coach with any winning sense [and Kelly is off the charts on that] makes gratuitous nods to veterans in real games just because they've paid dues, if they cannot outplay younger players.

As an aside, I'm happy for the young persons on the site for their large number of posts [ sorry... wrong font? ].

Add-on: I listened to most of the presscon and Coach seems to me to be:

1). Ready to split Eifert out a lot;
2). Ready to use a lot of hybrid speed OLB/S and happy about it; [me, too and thank God];
3). Is genuinely worried about CB despite keeping a good face forward. McDaniel to corner is desperation to have enough bodies. Cam played Safety on defense in HS I believe;
4). Is changing the offense to reflect things like the TE talent overload and the Slot Magicians. We will go 4-wide+ TE a lot with no backs. These O-changes are partly due to the playmakers at those TE & Slot/RB positions, but partly to play to the "other" QBs strengths. He is going to DEMAND play-extension mobility and NO Turnovers. If Golson or Hendrix cannot seize this opportunity then they haven't "got it" and it's Kiel's for the future.

I'll throw some in while I can...

Amir Carlisle hobbles into spring practice on crutches with an immobilizing boot on his left ankel.

Cierre Wood just can't contain his energy. Let's out a nice yell as he walks out of The Gug and towards practice field.

Ben Councell looks like he's put on the 10 pounds listed on the roster but looks like he could carry another 10 to 20 pounds.

Irish players looking good heading through practice gate this morning.

Ceirre Wood showing a ton of energy early on. Great to see. Energy rubbing off. The Irish are pumped.

Everett Golson seems especially excited, clapping more than anyone.

BK BARKING at Golson about finding the TE.

After a quick team session the O breaks up into individual position drills

Defense breaks into position groups. LBs popping blocking sled.

New Oline coach Heistand has teh boys getting after it...Even with no pads!

Safeties working on open field tackling.

Eifert does everything well. Moves well, catches well, blocks well.

Kiel looks effortless when he throws...impressive.

OLBs and MLBs in separate groups now. OLBs getting off blocks

BK taking the QBs through drills today.

Oline working some zone schemes...they look fit and quick

QBs working on throwing on the move. Could be a change of pace for the offense.

Only thing to be gleaned on Gunner today is he passes the eyeball test. Looks like a college QB should look, even if he should be in HS.

Footwork drills for QBs...Golson clearly the winner in terms of smoothness although Hendrix surprises

After reading the updates on twitter it sounds like golson really impressed. Kiel looks effortless and passes the eye ball test. Didn't see much on Rees. Golson looks best on the run

I doubt we will see Rees especially if they are working on rolling out. That's a Golson/Hendrix/Kiel type of move.

Rees has an advantage because of the meaningful snaps and knowledge of the playbook.

Just by the way Kelly talked in the PC toady i thik he still believes Rees is the best man for the starting job. Which is terrible!!!!!

I had that same feeling my friend, but it does not really matter because if Rees starts we go 8-5 and if a newcomer starts we most likely go 7-6 MAYBE 8-5. So really it does not matter who starts because with that schedule and question marks at QB and in the defensive backfield and switching running backs to play in the defensive backfield you are asking for trouble.

Desperate times call for desperate measures. This is gonna be a snapshot of last year......BUT our defense may get us an extra win.

I agree 100% and that is what the depth chart will look like IMO. Kiel is better than Rees but no sense in wasting a year of eligibility. I am pumped

I give Rees the edge simply because of his expanded knowledge of the playbook and playing time. Although, I believe the playbook was scaled back for Rees so maybe not as big of a deterrent that I think it is. However, if Golson/Hendrix are ready then sit Kiel and save a year.

^^I was really excited about Rabasa committing 2 years ago. Hope he gets to see the field this year and exceeds expectations.

Thinking about this defense, especially the front 7, makes things extremely exciting.

I'm more excited to watch the defense rather than the anemic offense.

I agree about Rees, not about the record for the backup. Rees has hit his ceiling. It's not fair to assume that of the back up though.
