I'm probably way off as usual in these matters, but unless a hoard of Armsteads comes storming through the door I feel that Ekanem might be the next commit and one that I've wanted for a very long time. Why?? Virginia Tech has been on him since forever. Bud Foster KNOWS defensive talent.

VT honors their commitments unless the player himself becomes a lawless thug. [see: Marcus Vick]. That wouldn't be the issue. Ekanem would come to ND for the right reasons rather than any negative recruiting ones.

I have to agree with Old Man Mike. Bud does have pretty good defenses year in an year out.

I agree, Scrach and Dents usually pick ND..........wonder if VaTech will honor all 4 years of the scholarship?

The kid is a solid player and will still be a solid player. He has great instincts and will have a year or two to get healthy regardless.

When running a 3-4 (which I'm personally not a huuuuge fan of as a base D) you can never have too many LB's. Half of them need to be LB/DE hybrids and we seem to rotate a lot (which i DO like). It'd be nice to get another LB commit IMO.

Potential Troy Niklas of this class who hops on board at the 11th hour if he enjoys his visit. At this point, sure looking like we will have room.

Recruiting Week In Review

Monday, 16 January 2012 16:10 Christian McCollum

I don't think this is any change from what's been reported. As of 4 PM a visit was to happen. Space is filling up.

Ken Ekanem, LB, 6-4, 245, Centreville High School, Clifton, VA has approached his recruitment very methodically, systematically trimming his list of schools from nine, to five, to four and finally to two. The talented Virginian has finally narrowed his list to just Notre Dame and Virginia Tech. Ekanem visited Virginia Tech last weekend and plans to take his official visit to Notre Dame later in the month of January. He was originally slated to visit South Bend in December but an ACL injury in the state title game pushed that visit back. Now that he is on the mend, he believes that he will be mobile enough to really enjoy Notre Dame.

Ekanem’s recruitment became even more complicated with the Irish when his recruiter, Charley Molnar, took the head coaching job at the University of Massachusetts. According to Ekanem, however, that has not lessened his interest in Notre Dame. Molnar’s departure actually accelerated the timing of Ekanem meeting his position coach and Notre Dame Defensive Coordinator Bob Diaco.

“Coach Diaco came to the school the week right after the injury occurred,” said Centreville’s Head Coach Chris Haddock. “At the time Ken was scheduled to visit that weekend. We all kind of mutually agreed that it would be better to wait until after surgery so he’d be a little bit more mobile and would enjoy himself better. We planned to do that later this month. As it stands right now, that’s where we are.”

Right now Haddock and Ekanem are in the process of finalizing their travel plans to South Bend.

“I’m still kind of playing phone tag, going back and forth, but I’m assuming everything is still a go,” said Haddock.

When you look at our class, as is, we are in good numbers shape in every area except linebacker, O-Line and one CB. If Wright commits, that does that. Even if Baratti moves down [and in my opinion we are OVERloaded with safeties now on this roster], we still lack recruitment this cycle at LB, even though the total roster looks fine. The biggest hole is the lack of the third OT, and that seems to be more and more unlikely, sadly. Nevertheless, Ekanem is very important to get us at least one power LB in this cycle.

For those of you more in the know than me, what is the chance that Jarron Jones eventually plays OT if we land the Armsteads, coupled with last year's d-line haul?

And, if we end up with only two OTs, we have to have four next year, also. In a year with limited scholarship numbers, that's going to make things VERY interesting and tight. I'm still hoping that Ken verbals, and the staff keeps a light on for him.

And I don't know squat, but I'd guess that it is at least as likely that Springmann would shift sides of the ball than Jones. Jones shows to be a possible uber-talent; Big Tony is in danger of getting depthchart buried at NT [Nix, Day, maybe Armstead senior, maybe Cwynar return, maybe playing time there by Tuitt, Schwenke, Jones himself]. If we whiff at the 3rd OT, Tony could see better options at RT [he was a basketball player and has good athleticism], and not mind the idea.

That latter paragraph is a high-jack from Ken Ekanem's thread so I apologize. Still really want Ken, as Bud Foster wants him, and that's similar to the Pope's Imprimatur.

The program would be better off IMO, but I believe he has his heart set on the defensive side of the ball.

I think he says at DE and reshirts. Most likely Lynch and Armstead will go early to the draft.

Notre Dame sending DL's to the draft early makes recruiting less dramatic! Seeing what Kelly has gone through I have to say he is one of the toughest SOB's I have ever seen!

As long as they get drafted in the 1st round. Kids will see that ND can send them to the NFL as not only draft picks but first rounders, high first round, that helps. Our last first round pick was Brady Quinn at 22 but our last Top Ten draft pick was way back in 1994 with Bryant Young going 7th and the year before had Rick Mirer go #2.

In my humble opinion, I think the reports of ND "cooling" on him after the injury have very limited merit. I understand how and why people came to that conclusion but I don't think it still applies. The kid is a phenomenally gifted athlete with great speed for his size and we would have to be idiots to pass on him with as many open slots as we're going to have come NSD.

Here are a couple new highlights from the state semifinal game:

In other news, by all accounts Ekanem is the prototypical "Notre Dame" kind of guy. You hear from reporters routinely how humble, well-spoken, and intelligent he is. He is also plays in my old high school sports district, and word on the street is the exact same. This is the kind of kid you take even after an ACL injury because you know he is going to be a hard worker and be a positive influence on your team with his attitude.

I took it that the reports of cooling were a function of the perception at the time that we were about to land the Armistead bros. plus Yuri. It was going to be a numbers crunch and CB and WR were still the much bigger need. I don't think it was a matter of the injury, although I am sure that has given everyone, including VT, something to think about.

I think we get him because he will fit it so well.

i think by this weekend, we'll have an idea of how interested we are in him. if we havent' received anything concrete on guys who are planning on signing on signing day, like darby, wright, standifer we'll make room with the notion that we're keeping room for armsteads and neal, should their interest still be there.
