Same thing happened with Bear Bryant. Once he retired he passed pretty quickly. I think it was only a few months, six tops. I might not like Penn State but I always admired Joe Pa. This whole Sandusky thing is insane and to be honest I can't help but think a little differently of Joe Pa. But that is not for me to judge. Prayers to the Paterno family. Go Irish!

Penn State is a disgrace. Joe Pa is a legend. My prayers tonight are for him. This is awful.

How would you deal with Sandusky then?

Start a different thread for that. IMO this is about Joe Pa's death. The Sandusky accusations are sickening, obviously. So sickening that it will derail this thread. Let's keep this thread about JoePa's impending death (or hopefully, his recovery). The Sandusky thing is relevant, but start a different thread on it or post that on one of the many open threads on PSU. Thanks...

Prayers for joe pa and his family. A PSU student just texted me has passed to back up that source.

Anything negative take elsewhere. This is about the loss of one of the greatest coaches ever but more importantly he was a husband, father, brother, friend, and mentor to many. A difficult time for PSU just became a whole lot tougher

There are bright days ahead for PSU.

But now, they all must grieve.

Faith.

I feel horrible for him and his family, but didn't everyone keep saying as soon as he retired (let go) that this type of thing would happen.

Its terribly sad, but, err, why the "wow"s?

He's looked ill, in a terminal way, for the last 2 years or so. I know they SAY they just discovered his cancer, but the reality is he's likely had it for a few years now. Add to that he's clearly been addled for about 10 years and this development isn't terribly surprising.

Its sad, and I feel for his family. He did a lot for college football. If only he'd retired 10 years ago (like everyone was basically asking him to) he might have enjoyed life more at the end and not had his legacy go into the toilet.

Its all very sad for a lot of reasons...

Guy loved coaching... he spent the last 10 years of his life doing exactly what he loved and wanted to do.

Who cares if it was not a shock, all that noise is not appropriate at this time. Pray for that family.

This is a spiritual thing in many ways. Joe Paterno was a human being who got very confused about these "out-of-football" matters under great stress. We all make mistakes under such pressures. So, we should not judge him harshly and wish him Gods Speed up the light tunnel to the afterlife.

It is also spiritual in another subtler way. Joe Paterno's life was in football. That life kept him alive. It was his willpower day-to-day which was sustaining him against the ongoing breakdown. When football left, so did his will-to-live. That will-to-live is a sacred hint to all the rest of us that not everything is meat and juices. Paterno's SPIRIT was what was keeping him alive. When he felt his life was over, he stepped aside [deliberately or not] and let the material world run its course.

I find in this rapid rush towards death to be something paradoxically inspirational. Paterno, probably without recognizing it, has given us one last gift of insight into the spiritual world.

Well old man, I'm sure that you did a mountain of good in your life and the Lord will let you in The Gate. I hope to see you some day [not TOO soon, but sooner than these pups on IE] and talk college football, and whether you really wanted to sign two of my brothers like they brag to me.

I wish I could really say what I want to say about the sob... RIP Joe. Hopefully, as your last breath has been had, you'll remember some folks who weren't strong enough to fight for themselves and you just looked past things to cover your own azz and the University which sold you down the river in the end. Go with God, Joe... May he have mercy on your brittle ol' soul.

Strictly football speaking he is and was an icon. His personal life and struggles are another story.

Either way may he rest in peace and now the ONE that can judge him, can.

No matter the mistakes he has made.
The man to me was college football.
In a time where coaches leave their school for a little bit more money he could have left his school anytime he wanted to for more money or a more exciting lifestyle because believe me Central PA isn't the most exciting place in the world.
He stayed for love of his school.
He will be honored for his accomplishments at Penn State as we honor Knute Ara Frank and Lou for what they accomplished.
Godspeed JoePa.

That may be true, but neither Knute, Frank, Ara nor Lou allowed for little boys to be throttled by an assistant coach under their watch. I guess I don't understand where you're coming from here.
