Unbelievable how much weight this proposal actually carries.. A lot of people are just blind by the idea that it can't possibly happen, yet this is very real, and VERY POSSIBLE w/o a larger voice of opposition.

Also, alot of people don't fully understand it. SOme people who I have talked to think its a good thing on principal until they actually hear how it can/will affect their most commonly used websites.

Let''s look real close to home - it could affect this IrishEnvy. Any website that even COULD facilitate copyrite theft, could be shut down; any website that allows embedded videos, pictures or even hosts a comment section is guilty of enabling or facilitating piracy because that's the nature of the Internet as a whole.

The bill is written so, if enacted, it would effectively hand over censorship of the entire Internet to American businesses, and the entertainment industry in particular. Incidentally, it was lobbyists for the entertainment industry who wrote this bill in the first place for 50-60 year old congressmen who probably didn't receive by e-mail.

The act gives film studios and music executives the power to erase nearly any website they see as a threat to business, putting the task on the owner of the website to prove his or her innocence...

And that's just SOPA. What about the sister bill PIPA (Protect IP Act) that no one talks about?

SOPA and PIPA are great ideas gone horribly wrong. They took it wayyyyy to far. Illegal website steal 130 billion dollars a year from legitimate websites. However when does it stop. This is a huge violation of privacy and completely against the constitution. It's pathetic how both parties just walk all over the great document

People who are most upset about this are also a huge part of the problem. If you download ILLEGAL music, videos, books, pictures, etc from the internet, you're part of the culture that's lead to the emergence of a sopa-like beast. So, by all means, protest these two bills. But do your part to stop internet piracy (yarrrrr) as well.

Well, the conversation can exist, even if it's only here.

Intellectual property laws need to be reexamined to bring them into line with the modern age. With the rise of 3d printing, the conflicts we're seeing over intellectual property online are going to start spilling into the real world. I'd be interested in hearing what people think are good ways to start- how do you make sure people stand to benefit from their creativity without resorting to excessive censorship.

I just read a great article on this subject. Short but very well worth your time.

My bottom line: SOPA/PIPA is wrong and would mean the end of the open Internet we know and love. If it weren't wrong, it would remain an attempt to solve a largely nonexistent problem. And even if stronger copyright protections would significantly help our economy, this legislation wouldn't actually do that.

Technology moves faster than legislation.

The internet as we know it would be over, but it would turn into something else.

I defer to common sense rather than type a triage on this. Common sense being: this is a bad thing.

In the end if it gets passed, the internet will evolve. Everyone thought it was the end of the line for music sharing when Napster bit it, it was just the beginning.

Just because BigMusic and BigMovie cannot or will not, pull its aging *** corpse into the digital age, we will all suffer. Their lobbyists have deep pockets unfortunately, and the lobbyists are greater than the American people's say in government. Until lobbying is outlawed you will constantly get bent over the table.
